I am a freight forwarder. I arrange transportation services for cargo. Mostly same day services.
Pick up in Las Vegas and get a package to Omaha as fast as possible would be an example of what we do.
Presently I pay the OAG people about $250.00 per year to look up flights from their online version.
I also use an Iphone app called WorldMate where I can easily find flight info, between city pairs, when I am away from the office.
The first thing I normally need to do (if I am away from the office) is to search TavelMath.com for the closest airport to the zip code I want to send the package to. TravelMath will let me know what the closest International airport is to my selected zipcode. It will also tell me approx how far the airport is from the center of the zipcode I am searching on.
It will also tell me what other airports are in that area and how far from the center of the zip code.
This is important because of the following example.
The closest International Airport to zip code 68114 is the DesMoines International Airport which according to TravelMath is 126 miles from the center of 68114
TravelMath also displays that Epply Airfield (OMA) is 9 miles from the center of that zip code. Being in the business for 30 years I would know that I need to send the package into the OMA airport for this shipment.
(Not sure but I think this can be done from Google also?)(Don't know that you would need to subscribe to something to pass this data along)
After I have determined what airport I need to send the package to I then go to WorldMate and look up flights from the airport the package will originate in to the Omaha airport. (You might have some subscription costs involved with this?)
Don't know about the travel industry but I think an application that could be used on the desktop, along with a phone, would be something that most cargo people who purchase a subscription to the Online OAG would appreciate and be willing to pay for the convenience.
It would need to have the following features.
Enter destination zip code:
Select destination airport from what is displayed
Select origin airport
Display flights between those two airport codes.
Don't know where the price point would be but based on my present circumstances I would think that the phone app should be in the 19.99 - 24.99 bracket. I paid this for logmein and Jaadu RDP apps so that I can login to my system from my phone.
Don't know where you should be on the desktop side but a yearly subscription in the $100 to $250 would not be unreasonable in my industry.
Don't know if it's worth your time to look at but thought I would pass it on.
If you like it and need a beta tester let me know.
Chuck
