Has anybody succesfully implemented a smoking ban in their PICU / LSU
or is the ban a complete joke ? Do you forcibiliy take cigarettes and
lighters etc off patients who refuse togive them up ?

We've tried damn hard on our PICU.
Usually, patients respect that they need to go outside to smoke, but
we get the occasional hiccup.
The main problem we have is patients smoking as an anti establishment
thing.
We regularly raise non smoking at the ward community meetings and then
issue offenders with a warning.
If they persist, then lighters and / or cigarettes are removed.
We haven't yet had to forcibly remove said items

Broadmoor have completely banned smoking on the whole site but i guess
it is easier for them to police as it is harder to get fags into that
place. God knows i tried. I think PICU's and secure establishments
will just have to tighten up on their search proceedures but it will
be nigh impossible on open accute wards. Got to go now popping out for
a fag. :)
