Okmost of you is ALL wrong...Nena did do the original song and it's about the cold war. The red balloons represent Russia, etc, etc, etc. Anyway, it wasn't a dream of hers, it was an analysis of German/Russian relations

Let's start with the first bit... There are two lovers(?) in a toy shop. They buy a bag of 100 balloons and let them go at dawn. Here's where politics come in... You can all say different things but what I think is this takes place in Germany. The kids let off all but one of the balloons into the sky (99 red balloons) and this is picked up on the German radar defence net, and is misinterpreted as Russian(?) W.M.D.'s. the Germans activate their army/national guard and attack the Russians prematurely. The Russians anniahlate them with their nuclear weapons, destroying the Germans (this could be seen as WWIII by some)

In the end the main character is standing in the rubble of the city. The girl has died in the battle. (he may be standing by her body or some sentimental crap like that) He pulls the final balloon out of his pocket and let's it go.

I would also like to ask that you put the original German lyrics up so ppl can decide for them self what they think the translation is. Also if you are going to translate it you might want to check the first line of German. Kriegsminister translates to War-minister, or secretary of war (kriegs=war minister=leader)

The song is about the cold war...The cold war was a silent war which was a power struggle for US and Russia. Super-Power vs Super-Powerwe both had nukes and were probably the 2 most powerful nations in the world... we were always trying to get ahead of the Russia's from when they launched the first satellite and we "got the 1st man on the moon"

this song is all about what probably would happen if either country launched a nuclear attack"Back at base, bugs in the softwareFlash the message, 'Something's out there'"this is saying if our computers got the wrong message from our radars about missiles coming

99 dreams I have hadIn every one a red balloon (a nuke)It's all over and I'm standin' prettyIn the dust that was a cityIf I could find a souvenierJust to prove the world was here...And here it is, a red balloonI think of you and let it go.The writer is standing if the rubble from a nuclear war... he can't even tell it civilization once existed..then he says here it is.. a red balloon... (the visible destruction from a nuke which is proof)

So, a couple goes and buys some balloons. They let them go. Then, they show up on some radar and they think the balloons are missles (bug in the software.) Aaaah, it's war! They send ourr the troops and then bomb a city.

i love goldfinger, i mean i really do love them. they are one of my five favorite bands. but i don't love this song. i didn't really like the original and really don't like this song. their cover of 'up the junction' kicks ass but this one just doesn't work i feel. anyone else agree with me? probably not.
