Many local talks are coming up this fall but I want to flag the most
exciting program first because it's a Northern CA event being held in
our own county - who-hoo!
Saturday, November 12th , the California Association for the Gifted
(CAG) is holding a one-day symposium for parents and educators in our
county, at theNVUSD High School in American Canyon.

If you have never been to a conference on gifted children and have
struggles with your child because of school boredom and/or unusual
behaviors or needs relating to "giftedness", I strongly encourage you
to attend this all-day program (cost $75.) Usually programs on
gifted students are in places like Sacramento or Palo Alto because CAG
offices are in Sacramento and EPGY, a Stanford Program for gifted
youth is in Palo Alto.
- full, CAG and/or other gifted conferences cost typically cost over
$200 to attend. This one day conference on November 12 is very
affordable at $75 considering the top talent it is featuring. The
full schedule will be available for this symposium on October 1st.
Some of the top presenters in the state and the nation will be
presenting at this mini-conference. This program can change a
family's life - this is not an over-statement. This costs less than
getting your teeth cleaned -- isn't your child's well being worth as
much as dental hygiene? We may not have a program like this in our
county (with top, out of area presenters) again. If you miss it, you
may kick yourself later.
- We invited CAG to host this event here and CAG agreed in part
because Napa County is easy for other N. CA parents and teachers to
get to.
- More interestingly, our location makes sense because NVUSD is a
"district to watch." NVUSD is expanding gifted and advanced education
at a time when most districts in the state are decreasing
accountability to advanced learners. NVUSD Asst Superintendent of
Instruction, Elena Toscano received a CAG award this year because
NVUSD is leading on this topic. Ms. Toscano is addressing all
attendees at this symposium for 20-30 minutes, as a part of the
opening plenary session to explain how to expand accountability to
gifted students is possible on a shrinking budget for education.
-NVUSD is "working smart" , creating change primarily through teacher
training as well as through some online resources for students which
make differentiated instruction easier. This change work benefits all
kinds of learners in our classrooms. It's just that gifted children
need these best practices in order to learn new material and new
skills (instead of being stuck repeating skills/ content already
mastered in previous years.)
