I have the nanoderf but can no longer get the nanoderf software scripts to compile properly for the ether card libraries.
Is the nanoderf now out of date?

Which scripts are you referring to?
What have you tried?
What didn't work?
One change to EtherCard recently, is that Slave Select now defaults to
Pin 10, rather than Pin 8, which the Nanode uses for the ENC28J60.
Have you tried changing your begin line to something like this?
ether.begin(sizeof Ethernet::buffer, mymac, 8) == 0
