Using Nanode Gateway to burn bootloader on ATtiny13

I'm trying to use my Gateway to program an ATtiny13, using the great guide by Tekstop here:

but it's reporting the 13's signature as 0x000000 so no communication I guess.
I've checked and rechecked my wiring, and tried it with and without the 10uf capacitor but no luck.
Is there something obvious I'm missing - a difference between the Gateway and a Uno?
Waiting hopefully...
