"I showed up with a bandana but that didn't last long. I took it off pretty quickly as I didn't want people to ask questions or be whispering about me behind my back. I'd rather be upfront and say, this is who I am, this is the way I look'."
One of six World Rugby Regional Association Olympic Qualification Tournaments taking place between 1 May 2023 and 31 December 2023, the two-day event offers a Paris 2024 quota spot for the top nation in the women's and men's editions.
It is at this event that Apps hopes to lead her charges to a qualification quota spot for Canada women at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with the ultimate aim of improving on their showing at Tokyo 2020, in which the side placed ninth.
So, the pressure is ramping up, but the woman leading the way for the North American side has not only already had to navigate a challenging start in life but also a devastating injury that put her appearance at the Japan Games in jeopardy.
"It was frightening for her, and it was frightening for me," her mum, Danielle French, told World Rugby in April 2022 of the moment she started to find chunks of hair on her daughter's hairbrush and in the shower.
"I woke up in the morning and half of my hair was on the pillow, like staticky, like it's attached to the pillow," remembered Apps. "And I came downstairs, and I was like, 'Mum!' and my hair was really thin, and she looked at me and she was like, 'Oh my gosh'."
"I was really shaken up by it," said French, "because it's startling to see your child lose that much hair. And I don't really recall how long it took for her to lose most of her hair, but it was quick."
One of four sisters, her siblings' initial reaction was typical. "It went from like a childish moment of 'who made the shower disgusting and left all this hair behind', to 'Oh my gosh this is a lot of hair'," said Carlyle Apps.
A visit to the doctor provided little solace. Young Apps was told she had alopecia universalis, pretty much the most extreme form of the condition with hair lost from every part of the body. Not only that, there was not much that could be done about it.
"When my mum first told me that was a possibility, I was really scared and I immediately yelled out to the room, 'I'm not going to be a baldy mum. I'm not gonna do that. This isn't happening to me.' But so quickly, when those moments would be really scary, my sisters and my family were always right there."
That little bit of confidence blossomed when Apps took to rugby at 15 playing for her high school. Clearly talented from the off, the camaraderie of the team environment in which people from all walks of life work hard toward a common goal suited Apps' personality.
"You don't have to look like this or be this athletic type to play, you can be whatever and find a place on the team. I've really enjoyed making lifelong friends, playing rugby, just getting to know myself a bit better playing the sport," said Apps to World Rugby.
Three years later, a Sevens Series debut with Canada came in Sydney, with the team finishing third in the tournament. The side then came in seventh at the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco.
Rehab finished just as the 2020 season was shut down in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic, with more recovery time the benefit for Apps, who went on to make her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, delayed to 2021.
"It's been 18 years since I lost my hair, basically, and I wouldn't change it," she said. "I don't think I'd go back to having hair again because it's who I am now, and it's created the person I am today."
