Our government wants tohelp foreign corporations, like Monsanto, dump genetically modified (GM) food on our plate. They want to create a Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) which will approve GM crops, without even considering your opinion or mine.
The BRAI bill proposes to set-up a body that will allow GM crops in our country, without checking their safety.[1] Genetic modification of crops is a dangerous technology, being opposed by countries all over the world.
Just last month, the Supreme Court appointed expert committee recommended a moratorium on field trials of GM food crops citing the potential danger of GM crops to our health and environment. [2] For three years lakhs of people have been protesting against GM crops and the BRAI bill and this helped delay the bill.[3] Yet the government wants to create BRAI and allow GM food in our country.
Don’t let the government take away your right to eat safe food. Join hands with lakhs of people, who have saved our food so far, to prevent the creation of BRAI.
The BRAI bill wasintroduced, rather slyly, in the Budget session of Parliament in 2013.[4] Right now, it’s being reviewed by a Standing Committee on Science, Technology, Environment and Forests.
The Standing Committee asked people to send in comments on the bill. Then, under strong public pressure, theyextended the deadline to get more comments on the bill. Once the Committee is done with the bill, the government will be eager to present thisbill in the Monsoon session of Parliament this August.
There is already alot of opposition to this bill. Soon, people all over the country will start making their reservation with the bill known from the very first day of the Monsoon session. More voices asking for safe food will make the government think twice before they table the bill.
This is our chance to make sure that our right to eat safe and healthy food is not taken away by foreign multinational seed corporations. We’ve saved our food before,[5] let’s do it once again.
