After almost 3 years in Shanghai, our family’s time here is drawing to a definitive close on September 30. By “definitive” I mean that while the family has been migrating in stages back to LA over the last couple of months, my role here will be complete as of that date, and I step onto the plane to head back to LA and the next stage of my career.
The weekend rides have been one of my greatest joys in being in Shanghai and I will miss them. I plan to get in one last (borrowed bike) ride before we close up but with the weirdness of the calendar over the split autumn festival / national day, I’m not clear when “Sunday” will be for the group. Disney’s closed on Wed-Fri but open on Sat-Sun – technically, I think Friday 24 September is Sunday for us. I don’t know who else is in this situation.
So, for my last ride: looking to see whether folks are planning to ride on Sunday 26 September, or if Friday 24 September is a possibility. Roll call?

As it turned out, Sunday 19th Sept. was my last ride with the Nanchuiche Group as end of assignment celebrations and packing activities limited the eventual availability of me and/or my bike.
I thank all in the group for welcoming me to and encouraging me with this pastime, and particularly Dale McDonald, who persuaded me to participate during dinner one Saturday evening in Xintiandi in summer 2009! I wish only that I had taken up riding earlier during my 6 years in Shanghai – I may then even have reached a decent level of fitness!
Happily, I expect to continue riding in the parklands of Surrey (UK) and in due course I plan also to take up road riding, which doubtless will require an investment in carbon fibre….

Here in Belgium, bikes are all over, I go by bike to the office 3 times a week ( while the winter comes).
I have to tell you that - miss you all, mainly the great moments racing to get to eat the dumplings !!
