Media lies at the heart of British life; whether through its historical embrace of the daily newspaper, the modulated tones of the BBC or its enthusiasm for voicing its opinion through Twitter, the rowdy, rambunctious, irreverent nature of British democracy is reflected in the country's love of news, views and comment.

The Media Society is a charity which exists to reflect that passion and exuberance through an exciting, diverse and engaging events programme encouraging anyone with an interest in media to get involved, listening to and questioning those at the heart of this enthralling industry.

Were they fast enough with the facts? Did the right people speak truth to power?
Were we given 'news we could use'?

First, social media fosters a false sense of online "connections" and superficial friendships leading to emotional and psychological problems. The Second harm of social media is that it can become easily addictive taking away family and personal time as well as diminish interpersonal skills, leading to antisocial behavior. Lastly, social media has become a tool for criminals, predators and terrorists enabling them to commit illegal acts. And the third analysis will consist of showing the link between the psychological problems caused by social media and criminal activities committed.

This book covers majority types and forms of media and reviews their historical developments and characteristics in detail. Foundational knowledge of communication, mass communication, and media literacy are introduced at the very beginning before specific media forms. Some theoretical frameworks and models such as cultivation, first and third person effect, social learning, and limited capacity model are embedded in the discussion of specific media types. This book might not be comprehensive enough to be used as an "introductory mass communication text" given the limitation on theoretical and empirical reference. However, it could be a great supplementary material for students to build basic knowledge in the field of mass communication.

I agree with other reviews that mass communication textbooks may be hard to keep up-to-date with the developments in the field. The structure of the textbook and its open access nature make it easy to implement the needed updates after it is published.

The writing is clear and accessible. More accessible language makes the book easy to follow, especially for beginners (like freshmen) in the field of mass communication and media studies, as well as for those who want to self-educate using this text.

The content is heavily US-based and white-dominant. Following the #CommunicationSoWhite movement, I hope to see more diverse examples in communication texts, representing underrepresented social groups and extending beyond the WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) countries and cultures.
