What depth? You mean the old 1/2/3/4/5% damage increase on lightning bolts depth? Or the old 1/2/3/4/5% more mana depth?
Old talents were trash and Class Officers ran around in every guild making sure people had spent points correctly, or they were booted.
With the current system, at least they offered choice in some rows. Not all, but some.
I just hope they improve on the stupid tree they used to have in Vanilla/TBC/etc
People like to repeat this, but there was actually more depth to the old talents. Just because there were uninteresting talent options like 1% more crit that does not mean you just blindly picked stuff based on a build. You actually had a wide variety of builds based on what content you were doing, and even had choices in those. Now you just go "priest? shadow? mythic+? void torrent.".
So wait a sec...
Ion specifically talked about "wanting to bring hybriziation back" and then you literally can't spec into anything from other trees. What exactly brings hybrids back then? Cause this talent system already looks like "Illusion of Choice" written all over it. Even if we get 10 loadouts that we can use for different aspects of the game. Yes that's a QOL change for sure, but its still illusion as there will be pretty set spec choices we will have for all aspects of the game.
part of me is worried they are jsut going to take like 80% of our current classes and then just put them into the talent tree. Im not against most my classes spells being from the tree, but they need to add new stuff if they are going to make us do this so that when we put our points in we get that 80% of spells back and not 40%.
Look there's a lot we don't know and a lot we need to know. But give this a chance. If they're genuinely trying to do away with "Borrowed Power" then this "Talent System" needs time to develop and breathe. Keep in mind that this isn't just a "Dragonflight" thing, they're trying to set the foundations to where they never have to rely on a "BP" system again.
fingers crossed for a way to bring back gladiator. i have been trying for years to get a build that works for it
I would love to see them attempt this again. In my opinion the only reason it didn't work out back in WoD was because "Bonus Armor" made it broken.
"Does this mean that I can get talents from any spec on my class with this new system?
No, there will still be plenty of things in the spec-specific talent trees. Guardian druids will still see plenty of tanking related things in their spec tree that a Restoration druid cannot obtain, and vise-versa. A Restoration druid can invest more points in the Bear related abilities on the class talent tree for more defensive options just as much as a Guardian druid can invest points into more healing options from the class tree. The new spec talent trees will be heavily focused on your combat role of healer, tank, or DPS."
As I play Classic, I'm reminded of something really fun about the original talent system. Going partly down one spec's tree and partly down another (the hybrid) would effectively create a new spec out of two (or three) others. Similarly, you could sometimes pull most of the talents out of one tree to focus on a particular playstyle or thematic ability (think "shadow destro" vs "fire destro") to again effectively create a new spec.
This to me is a core value-added depth to the game that currently isn't there in Retail, but I think would be a big win in reintroducing a talent tree system. As stated by so many others, putting talent points into "increases x by y%" doesnt feel fun or interesting. But choosing to use Shadow abilities over Fire abilities for Destruction, choosing to tinge/augment my Frost abilities with Fire magic for Mage, choosing to trade out Shadow damaging abilities for Holy damage ones in Disc?
That sounds much more interesting and exciting to me (for what it's worth).
I hope there will be a Q&A for classes aswell some Class totally need to be redesigned like Demonology warlock which lost the core of being a demonology. It's now a stupid demon Master and nothing else. MOP and WoD demo was the best.
