"It takes a while to get comfortable because ... first of all, you're just kind of amazed just watching it," said Nimz, who on a windy October afternoon described himself as "very, very interested" but also a "little suspicious" of autonomous technology before using John Deere's machine on his farm. Nimz has been testing John Deere's autonomous equipment on his farm for four years, but he still drives by the field where the tractor is running by itself, just to marvel at the fact it's actually working without anyone in the cab.
Growing up on a farm in rural Iowa, I've ridden in combines with my dad dozens of times and have checked out John Deere machines that steer themselves. But the experience of sitting behind the wheel of a massive machine as it completely drives itself can only be described in one word: wild.
There are fifteen different jobs available in John Deere: Drive Green. Each job places you in control of an authentic John Deere machine in a unique location. One job will have you harvesting crops with a 9860 STS Combine in a field, while another will have you using a CX20 mower to cut the grass on a golf course. Other jobs have duties that range from planting seeds to spraying crops. Although each job explores a different machine and aspect of farming, the gameplay does not differ significantly from one job to the next. It may be realistic, but can also be repetitive. Additionally, working on a large field can be boring as you'll need to drive around it many times to complete the job.
