Dear All,

I

We had the first meeting of nalsar litigation forum, and we had Mr. Vedantam
Srinivisan, Senior Advocate, Madras High Court as our resource person.

He spoke with students on issues ranging from making meaningful use of legal
education and to transform into an asset for a legal practitioner. He
particularly emphasized on litigation as a career over law-firm, as it
offers more thrill in daily work, which acts like a fuel for continued
interest in whatever one is doing.

He advised students to start from lower court to get a firm understanding of
procedure, even if that entails going to record rooms with lawyer's clerk.
Also, he said that it was better start as a generalist and then specialise
in an area.

He said, tribunals hold a lot of money and for us, a smart way would be to
start from tribunal and the make your clients who would give you appeals
also to HC. In this context he said, it is important for lawyers to have
social presence in commercial and legal circles such that without soliciting
work, cases should come to him/her.

He gave many other tips and spoke to students about nuances of being a
lawyer, an advocate and a judge. I am sure those members who attended the
session are immensely benefited from this.

After tea and snacks, the members had their internal discussion and it was
decided that now that we have set the ball rolling with an introductory
lecture by a senior counsel, we need to organize more activities. The
details of these activities would be chalked out in the next meeting. It was
unanimously agreed that there would be no coercion on the members, and it
would continue to be an exclusive groups.
We want to retain only those students who are genuinely interested and have
little room for 'cv-making' activities, therefore, we'd rather have smaller
interested group so that our discussions could be more meaningful. Further,
it was decided to hold exclusive lunch and dinners for the members of the
forum, in line with practices at bar associations.

It was agreed that any member who is absent for two consecutive meetings
without giving prior notice with sufficient cause to the exec would be
expelled from the forum. The rule applies equally to the executive members
also, as all of us are bound by rule of law.

III

Mr. Vedantam Srinivasan is going to lecture 5th year students on Advocacy
and Litigation in their classroom from 2.30pm-4.00pm on April 17-18, 2008.
I reiterate that those who are interested must come for it, it is quite a
treat to listen to him.
