Jamie starts selling Viagra, which is an instant success. He reveals that he wants a serious relationship, but Maggie breaks up with him. He confronts her while she helps senior citizens onto a bus bound for Canada to obtain cheap prescription drugs. They argue, Jamie refuses to leave and waits for Maggie all night at a bus stop. Touched, she reciprocates feelings and they resume their relationship.

In preparing for the film, Hathaway credits the work of Kate Winslet and Penélope Cruz, two actresses "whose work [she] returned to a lot in preparation" for Love and Other Drugs; she believes both have "done nudity with a tremendous amount of sensitivity and dignity".[6] She identified one of her favorite Cruz films, Abre Los Ojos, as work that helped her greatly for her role.[7] Like Gyllenhaal, Hathaway had final cut over those scenes, using it to cut five seconds where she thought "the camera lingered a little bit".[6] Hathaway said that she did not believe her nudity in the film would put off socially conservative people who would otherwise see the film, saying "just because nudity is such a contentious issue in America people believe that they automatically alienate the conservative parts of America by having nudity. But I give the American public more credit than that. I think that people are curious and people do love love stories. I think people might find it and like it, even though it is a little bit risky."[8]
Soon, however, it became clear that the improvements made heroin not less potent than morphine, but more so, and consequently more addictive. Jamie Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a young smooth-talking salesman who lands a job with one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world. As his ruthless ambition to succeed in his new career advances, he has an unexpected and unconventional meeting with a young woman named Maggie Murdock (Anne Hathaway). Maggie is young, beautiful, intelligent and feisty, but she also suffers from early onset Parkinson's - a disease which she knows will eventually envelop and devastate her life. Despite the fact that Maggie initially despises Jamie and all that he stands for, the chemistry between them is blatantly obvious. Soon, the pair are just as addicted to one another as people are to the popular drugs Jamie provides. This obsession with medication (and self-medication) develops into an interesting side-plot as the film examines and recounts the rise and rise of popular drugs, such as that infamous little blue pill, in a world that's always desperate for a cure.
Hathaway shows off some of her acting chops - as she truly immerses herself in her spirited, yet hapless character. The attention to detail she brings to the role makes the suffering of Maggie Murdock believable and moving, even if the script sometimes leans towards sentimentality. However, Love and Other Drugs is not all about the drama. It consistently provides moments of genuine comedy, mostly courtesy of Josh Gad, who plays Jamie's kooky younger brother. To compliment Gad's comedic presence, Gyllenhaal and Hathaway also keep up their end of the deal by really putting themselves out there for the sake of lightening up a film that would otherwise have been too sappy to bear.

Some people may be familiar with this term thanks to Gaslight, the 1944 Oscar winning film starring Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer. In the story, a husband (Boyer) tries to convince his new wife (Bergman) that shes imagining things, in particular the occasional dimming of their homes gas lights. (This is part of his plan to rob her of some very valuable jewelry.) Over time, the wife, who trusts that her husband loves her and would never hurt her, starts to believe his lies and to question her perception of reality.
Sadly, Alexandras story is not unusual. In cases of romantic and sexual infidelity, almost every betrayed partner experiences gaslighting to some degree. They sense that something is wrong in the relationship, they confront their significant other, and then the cheater flips the script, adamantly denying infidelity and asserting that the betrayed partners discomfort is based not in fact, but in paranoia and unfounded fear. Basically, cheaters insist that theyre not keeping any secrets, that the lies theyve been telling are actually true, and that their partner is either delusional or making things up for some absurd reason.
In large part, betrayed partners willingness to believe even the most outrageous lies (and to internalize blame for things that are clearly not their fault) stems from the fact that gaslighting starts slowly and builds gradually over time. Its like placing a frog in a pot of warm water that is then set to boil. Because the temperature increases only slowly and incrementally, the innocent frog never even realizes its being cooked. Put another way, a cheaters lies are usually plausible in the beginning. Im sorry I got home at midnight. Im working on a very exciting project and I lost track of time. An excuse like that sounds perfectly reasonable to a woman (or man) who both loves and trusts her (or his) partner, so its easily accepted. Then, as the cheating increases, so do the lies. Over time, as betrayed partners become habituated to increasing levels of deceit, even utterly ridiculous fabrications start to seem realistic. So instead of questioning the cheater, a betrayed and psychologically abused partner will simply question herself (or himself).

We can help by using every opportunity to force the issue of not using drugs to the point of making others uncomfortable, even if it means making ourselves unpopular.
My generation will remember how America swung into action when we were attacked in World War II. The war was not just fought by the fellows flying the planes or driving the tanks. It was fought at home by a mobilized nation -- men and women alike -- building planes and ships, clothing sailors and soldiers, feeding marines and airmen; and it was fought by children planting victory gardens and collecting cans. Well, now we're in another war for our freedom, and it's time for all of us to pull together again. So, for example, if your friend or neighbor or a family member has a drug or alcohol problem, don't turn the other way. Go to his help or to hers. Get others involved with you -- clubs, service groups, and community organizations -- and provide support and strength. And, of course, many of you've been cured through treatment and self-help. Well, you're the combat veterans, and you have a critical role to play. You can help others by telling your story and providing a willing hand to those in need. Being friends to others is the best way of being friends to ourselves. It's time, as Nancy said, for America to ``just say no'' to drugs.
