I think the convention for importing a .sldasm is that all the files need to be in the same folder, you import the .sldasm into Rhino and it brings in all the referenced .sldprt files in the folder automatically.

You can also simply import individual .sldprt files directly into Rhino. If they are part of an assembly and you do not import them using the .sldasm however, they will not necessarily be in the correct location or orientation relative to each other, as that info is contained in the .sldasm file.

I have added a SolidWorks assembly file (.sldasm) as my Model resource in Vuforia Studio, but the 3D model is not generating. Is it possible for me to use this .sldasm without incorporating any SolidWorks parts files (.sldprt)? Please advise.

In software development and 3D work, I have a preference for projects to be multiplatform. One of my challenges is to make the best possible conversion (and later improvements) of models originally created in SolidWorks imported by 3ds Max.

BTW: In the SolidWorks site, they accept one file only per submission, of either file type. The max file size is capped as well. I suspect that the reason is the CPU cost. Even simple models take a while to produce in 3D.

Solidworks colors dont come in as complex shaders in OV, sometimes its labled none if its a default color sometimes is a simple color shader. In either case, the colors from solidworks are simply that, just colors. They lack reflectivity, roughness, top coat, refraction etc. We need the shaders to look great in OV so that when we render with path tracing the product/render/scene look ultra realistic. Unfortunately, even solidworks integrated rendering tool, visualize and photoview, even require repainting with better shader to make the model look better/realistic. What i propose is to limit the amount of painting in solidworks, and instead use that time in Omniverse Composer. I have two videos i would like to share with you to help the way you paint/group etc. This will change the way you use composer 100% you have my email from our meeting today, please reach and I will send you a few links. -adamh

Hi Andrew,
Here is a .zip file containing the .IGS, .SLDPRT, and .SLDASM files of the model, as well as images of what the imported models looked like on my end (updated for USD Composer 2023.1):
Georgia Tech ME 1670 Solidworks Mech.zip (57.7 MB)

I need to get the features of each .sldprt file as the data of other project. But the truth is I have over 50000 .sldprt files, which takes lots of time to open each in solidworks and traverse its features and close it automatically. And I didn't find any solution in api documentation of solidworks in SOLIDWORKS Document Manager api Help. So is there anyway to get the features and sketches directly without opening the file in solidworks? Such as using the solidworks Document Manager api?

Can you show your output log?
The first thing that comes to mind is that your sldprt files used in your assembly are not in a folder that is looked for by datasmith. Where are your sldprt files? are they next to your sldasm?

Some CAD application separate parts and assembly files. Solidworks does it and usually you have an assembly file that refers to other assemblies or part files directly. So when loading an assembly file Datasmith or Solidworks will look for the parts that are referenced in the assembly. Here they are missing, hence the warning you get.
I got the same loading in solidworks directly.

Theorically the best way to get solidworks into UE are to either load the solidworks file directly in UE or use the solidworks exporter to udatasmith file and then import that in UE.
Solidworks importer is still under work but should get better as version are released.

How do I convert sldprt files for use with mastercam? I'm using mastercam 8.1 (with solids) and the files are saved solidworks files. The only software they have to open these files is solidworks viewer. I would like to edit these files and not go broke doing it.

eDrawings software is a product design communication tool for sharing representations of both 2D drawings and 3D models. The electronic data format of eDrawings files is highly compressed to enable easy transmission via email. When viewed with the eDrawings Viewer, these files provide intelligent interpretation tools (3D Pointer, Virtual Folding, Animated Drawing Views) that help the recipient easily understand and navigate the data they receive. eDrawings files are created through the use of the eDrawings Publisher add-in, which works as a plug-in to many popular CAD products. Once created, an eDrawings file may be sent to anyone via email. To eliminate the frustrations normally associated with 2D and 3D design data, the viewer may be embedded directly in an eDrawings file. These files can immediately be viewed by anyone with a Windows operating system. No additional CAD software or viewers are required.

SOLIDWORKS files (.sldprt/.sldasm/.slddrw): only files last saved with a SOLIDWORKS Professional or Premium license can be measured in eDrawings Viewer. In eDrawings Professional, measure is available regardless of the SOLIDWORKS license used when saving the file.

Before this, product teams would need to wait for physical models to be made to get their first real world experience. This comes at both a financial and time cost, so physical models are typically produced intermittently when it is most prudent.

Rapid prototyping is typically done more sparingly due to cost and time, but it goes beyond just a visual experience. The models can be held, and in some instances physically tested. By using both technologies, design teams will get the best of both worlds.

Hi Guys, I am used to exporting a design from Cadence and importing it into solidworks using circuit works. I was writing a post to ask advice about how I could fix it as it was placing the components off board. However in playing around with it I did manage to resolve it.

By 2023, approximately 7 million engineers and designers were using SolidWorks software to create production-ready 2D and 3D engineering drawings and advanced 3D models using a parametric feature-based approach.[7] SolidWorks also gives users the ability to perform analyses and simulations, including Finite Element Analysis. The product places an emphasis on faster modeling, new design tools, and enhanced collaboration.

SolidWorks is a solid modeler, and utilizes a parametric feature-based approach which was initially developed by PTC (Creo/Pro-Engineer) to create 3D CAD models and assemblies. The software uses the Parasolid modeling kernel.[29]

SolidWorks' goal is to "build new development models that address the major challenges currently facing the world".[31] Challenges for CAD/CAM engineers and designers include software compatibility, hardware reliability, and affordability of these tools.[32] The SolidWorks mission began with the release of SolidWorks 95 in 1995 and continues today.

Zemax can continue to offer you technical support, though we will not be able to troubleshoot, test, or repair problems associated with SolidWorks. Before sending your system to Zemax support staff, please convert your SolidWorks part or assembly to a STEP, SAT, STL, or IGES format and send that version of your system to the technical staff assisting you. If you send a version of your model which includes a SolidWorks part or assembly, those models will be converted to SAT files when they are opened by Zemax staff.

Sorry for not responding sooner. I thought I would respond now because I am on another project and have a similar problem. Here was the solution to my previous problem. I was given a .sldasm file. The file did not contain the .sldprt files. The reason that I was seeing an empty screen was because I had an assembly with no parts. The solution was to place the assembly file in a folder and then include all of the corresponding parts files also. That worked. As long as the parts files are in the same folder as the assembly files, the assembly files will reference the parts files in that folder. However, I am now on a new project and have a new problem with assembly and parts files. I will start a new thread. Thx for your help.

SOLIDWORKS is a proprietary format, used by the SOLIDWORKS software, a professional 3D CAD software application. It utilizes the file extensions ".sldprt" for part files and ".sldasm" for assembly files. In this format, all the necessary geometric information, features, dimensions, constraints, and other design data are stored to represent and document a 3D model.

Managing a large number of files when working with complex models can become challenging, especially when it comes to transferring data. Some files can be lost or deliberately hidden. Without all the files together, the user only has an approximate model geometry in the form of a polygonal mesh, but all design information, including the exact geometry, is missing.

Capturing an electrical design requires additional tools such as SOLIDWORKS Electrical 3D, and to really get the most out of the software you need accurate 3D models for all electrical components. Invariably, these models come directly from the manufacturer, but with a catch, they are almost definitely a neutral file format like IGES, STEP, or Parasolid.

Preparing, uploading, and adapting your CAD model for simulation is the first step in setting up a simulation. CAD models cannot be created in SimScale but they can certainly be uploaded, cleaned, and prepared to begin the simulation. Some tips for CAD preparation and its proper upload are outlined below:
