//The President is mindful that a large segment of Northern voters cast their ballots for him at last year’s presidential election, while an even larger segment gave the NPP an unprecedented number of votes for a Southern-based political party during the general election that followed. //

The claim that the Northern voters cast their ballots for Anura Dissanayake at last year's presidential elections is palpably false. Your memory seems to be short.

Figures don't lie. Anura Dissanayake came a distant third in the Northeast provinces.

He polled only 246,187 votes (11.09%), while Sajith Premadasa polled 676,681 (43.09%) and Ranil Wickremesinghe 355,348 (16%).

In the elections for local bodies, the NPP lost ground compared to parliamentary elections. In the parliamentary elections, NPP polled 409,566 (29.76%), but in the local body elections, it polled only 306,968, a loss of 102,598 votes.

In the Northeast, NPP was pushed to second place by ITAK. The ITAK polled 307,657 (24.13%). Next time please check your figures, and don't try to paint a cozy picture of NPP.
