Antivirus software helps to protect Windows 10 devices by scanning files and processes in real time. It looks for harmful codes or patterns linked to known viruses. The software keeps a database of virus signatures and compares files on your computer with these signatures to find matches. It also examines file behavior and characteristics to detect new viruses or other types of malware. By using real-time scanning, signature-based detection, and other types of file analysis, antivirus software helps to provide virus and other malware protection for Windows 10 devices.

Norton AntiVirus Plus can help protect you against phishing on your Windows 10 PC. It helps to block fraudulent websites that were created by scammers to steal your personal information, money, and passwords.

Virus attacks can cause serious damage to your computer, such as deleting files, encrypting data, shutting down the computer, and even being controlled by hackers to steal sensitive information. Antivirus software can detect and remove viruses, protecting your computer system and files from virus attacks.

Although installing antivirus software is an important measure to protect your computer, installing multiple antivirus software may also lead to other adverse effects. For example, conflicts may arise between multiple antivirus software, or different antivirus software may run simultaneously in the system background, consuming a lot of computer resources and memory, causing the system to become slow and unstable. Therefore, it is recommended that you only install a reliable antivirus software and ensure regular updates and maintenance to protect your computer and personal data from threats.

Ultimately, I would try to look into budgeting in a Mobile Device Management system with the AV to monitor and manage these devices. Or at least explain the importance of AV in your setting due to your inherent risk.

Assuming those 30 faculty/staff machines are Windows 10 or later, uninstall all third party AVs and just use the built in Windows Defender. Use MS-Edge for your browser and let it manage passwords for you.

I absolutely agree that a paid version would be better in this environment, but OP stated in the opening post that there is no money in the budget for AV. My thought is why not just use the built in AV in Windows, which is consistently one of the top rated AVs available, even beating out many paid AV products.

As an aside, are you in a position to collect all staff laptops over the summer and make the setups more consistent? If so, there are some free/open-source system deployment options for managing Windows laptops that could be an option. FOG Project , for example.

If you are a school or a charity you can get large discounts on MS Windows products and it will be free to try that option to see if it could be of benefit to you. Nonprofits Grants & Credits Eligibility Microsoft Nonprofits

Chromebooks have their own inbuilt resilience to malware. For a small charge you can set up central management for them and you might be able to persuade the powers that be that this will be a cost saving in terms of management and stopping their loss, etc. About ChromeOS device management - Chrome Enterprise and Education Help

If the Chromebooks survive long enough then they might end up EOL as far as Chromebook updates are concerned. For education Auto Update policy - Chrome Enterprise and Education Help If that happens then you might be able to load a regular Linux OS on them. See:

I have a HP Notebook - 15-ay503tu. For a few months, I had been having issues with slowing down of the laptop due to Windows Defender over zealously scanning files / folders etc. It was so bad that at times, the laptop reacted to clicks only after about a minute or so. I installed Kaspersky Free Antivirus hoping it would help with a smoother performance and that the laptop would be less sluggish

While the installation went smooth, on the recommended restart, the laptop just doesn't start anymore. It tries a few times to start, gives up and ends up forever on the Preparing Automatic Repair screen. I am clueless what I could do next. Below are the things I have tried so far,
