Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (INDO) and tryptophan 2,3-dioxygenase (TDO) each catalyze the first step in the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan metabolism. We describe the discovery of another enzyme with this activity, indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase-like protein (INDOL1), which is closely related to INDO and is expressed in mice and humans. The corresponding genes have a similar genomic structure and are situated adjacent to each other on human and mouse chromosome 8. They are likely to have arisen by gene duplication before the origin of the tetrapods. The expression of INDOL1 is highest in the mouse kidney, followed by epididymis, and liver. Expression of mouse INDOL1 was further localized to the tubular cells in the kidney and the spermatozoa. INDOL1 was assigned its name because of its structural similarity to INDO. We demonstrate that INDOL1 catalyses the conversion of tryptophan to kynurenine therefore a more appropriate nomenclature for the enzymes might be INDO-1 and INDO-2, or the more commonly-used abbreviations, IDO-1 and IDO-2. Although the two proteins have similar enzymatic activities, their different expression patterns within tissues and during malaria infection, suggests a distinct role for each protein. This identification of INDOL1 may help to explain the regulation of the diversity of physiological and patho-physiological processes in which the kynurenine pathway is involved.

"Who's hunting who?".Down-on-their luck brothers Lars and Ernie Smuntz (Nathan Lane and Lee Evans) don't think much of the crumbling old mansion they inherit... until they discover the estate is worth millions. But before they can cash in, they've got to rid the house of it's single, stubborn occupant: a tiny and tenacious mouse.

This year conservationists also recorded the first fatal mouse attacks on adult birds, after finding eight adult wandering albatross (Diomedea exulans) carcasses in April, the freshest of which had clear signs of mouse bites.

This escalation of attacks on birds gives new impetus to an ambitious mouse eradication program scheduled to start in April 2025 and run through the southern hemisphere winter, which aims to rid Marion Island of mice entirely. Conservationists say they hope it will enable the ecosystem to recover, including insects and plants that have borne the impact of mouse activity far longer than the seabirds.

The non-native house mouse (Mus musculus) arrived at Marion two centuries ago, when the island was a stopping-off point for sealing ships during the heyday of blubber hunting. Cats were introduced as pets and to control mice in 1948, but quickly went feral and flourished into their own enormous problem, killing nearly half a million seabirds annually, according to one estimate. An island-wide eradication program started in 1986 and the animals were gone by 1991.

Starting in early April 2025, a fleet of helicopters with the MFM project is scheduled to crisscross the island, spreading blood-thinning rodent-targeted bait in a blitz that will aim to wipe out the entire mouse population in one season.

Her hourly time-lapse photographs will help map cloud cover patterns over the hard-to-access inland peaks. Together with weather data collected through the 2022 winter, these will allow the operations team to plan for unpredictable flying conditions that may vary between the thickly vegetated coast and the highest polar desert region where barely anything grows.

The mice are concentrated around the coastline, where their primary food source is and where the birds nest, but the helicopter pilots will need to spread their bait evenly, including over the cold, harsh interior in case the odd outlier rodent family has settled there. The eradication team has also earmarked some lava tunnels for baiting by hand.

A winter operation, which in the Southern Hemisphere means the middle of the year, leaves pilots with fewer daylight hours and shorter windows in which wind and cloud conditions are suited to flying and dropping bait.

MFM has an advisory group guiding the operation on how to lower the risk that non-target species may be exposed to the bait. Sheathbills and kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus) are most likely to scavenge dead rodents. But the poison is slow-acting, and the mice are expected to return to their burrows before it takes effect, reducing the number of bodies out in the open. A winter operation means that most other bird species will have left the island for the season.

A camera trap image taken in December 2021 on Gough Island, 3,900 km (2,400 mi) northwest of Marion, delivered a blow to conservationists: a single mouse appeared in the frame, evidence that the rodent eradication attempted on this U.K.-administered island a few months earlier had failed.

In 1993 we asked the public to join in the first Great Nut Hunt. At the time it was the largest voluntary wildlife survey undertaken in Europe. In total, almost 250,000 nuts were found, of which over 13,000 were sent into the Chief Nutter for verification. 1,352 of those hazel nuts had indeed been eaten by dormice, identifying an astounding 334 new sites. Dormouse sites were confirmed in 29 counties across England and Wales, with 81 sites in Devon and 41 sites in Dorset.

In 2001, we launched the second Great Nut Hunt, to find new sites and also to revisit those found in 1993, to check whether dormice were still there. This survey found 136 sites with positive signs of hazel dormice. This brought the total of known dormouse sites throughout the UK to just over 800; not many for a mouse-sized animal and just a fraction of the number of sites that the dormouse would have occupied a century ago.

A nut hunt is really very simple and makes an ideal family expedition. The only extra equipment you will need is a magnifying glass. The best time to carry out the survey is during the autumn and winter when there are no leaves on the trees and the discarded nut shells are easiest to find on the woodland floor.

What wiped these little guys out? The list of threats to their survival is unfortunately long, starting with invasive species. The Dwarf Hutia had to compete with Black Rats for habitat and food; they also became prey for animals like mongooses and the invasive Walking Catfish, one of the most notorious predators in the Zapata Swamp. Much of their habitat has been destroyed by human hands, or by accidental fires. If we have any chance of uncovering the Dwarf Hutia, we need to better survey Zapata Swamp and manage its invasive species.

In 2019, Re:wild funded two rounds of camera-trapping work by the Mindoro Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, Inc. (MBCFI). These were the first surveys specifically organized to search for this species. Although there was no sign of the cloudrunner this time, Re:wild has already helped MBCFI set up more camera traps for an extended period of time to continue the search. Stay tuned!

In 2018, a tourist in West Papua took low-quality photos of a species that could possibly be the Wondiwoi Tree Kangaroo. It is imperative that conservation measures are put in place to protect the species once the rediscovery is confirmed through scientific techniques, such as DNA sampling with appropriate permits.
