About the Campaign
Zack was injured 8 years ago via a gunshot incident
and is confined to a wheel chair and has embarked on a journey to South Africa
for rehabilitation. He is doing this to get Kenyans to raise Ksh 250 Million in
60 days for the construction of Kenya’s first and only spinal cord
rehabilitation and trauma centre in Kenya.
Kenya only has the National Spinal Injury Hospital (NSIH)
whose core mandate is to offer medical treatment to a spinal
injury i.e. undertakes medical procedures at acute stage to heal the injury and
stabilize the patient and the rehabilitation centre to be built will seek
to prevent secondary complications, maximization of physical functioning and
reintegration of persons with a spinal injury into the community.
NSIH has 32 beds only and there are over 200
persons waiting for treatment at any one single time, yet it takes on average
six-6 months to treat a spinal injury with almost a similar time to
rehabilitate an individual.
There
is no facility in the entire Eastern and Central Africa to offer rehabilitation
of spinal injury. On the continent, the nearest facility is found in South
Africa and Egypt and the cost of rehabilitating one individual is a minimum of
KES 9 million - an amount too high for any one to afford. Yet, hundreds of
lives are daily either lost, maimed and or left with disability due to the
rampant road accidents.
