August Meetup: Call for speakers

Hello good people,

Its almost the first Saturday of a new month again. Is there anyone interested in presenting anything they have built, learnt or think is interesting with regards to Free, Libre and Open-Source Software?

Last meetup we had a Koha[0] user and administrator, it would be great to
learn more about this. I can check on having the meetup at a library,
for example Maktaba Kuu, KNLS Buruburu or Kibera community library.
Many of these have an entrance fee of about 30/= per day.

Uraia trust[1] have a machine readable copy of the Kenyan constitution
in Kiswahili. Have an xml version[2], maybe there would be interest in
using a machine learning model on it? A fully open model is available
from Swiss AI[3]. Can check if there is a library willing to host a meeting
if there is interest.

There were interesting presentations on mapping backbone fibre,
community networks at the Gaia Session of IETF 126[4]. One of the
participants[5] noted that many people use old computers with Windows 7 or
Windows 10, but could use GNU/Linux. Maybe it is worth meeting at a
school or teacher training institution to demonstrate some free software.
Maybe MKU might be interested in trying some free software, would be
happy to introduce Inkscape if they could install it in one of the
computer labs, but one can also boot GNU/Linux from a flash drive. Many
universities often have a GNU/Linux lab for students to use - at least
for computer forensics using Kali GNU/Linux or similar. GNU/Linux for
students outside computer science, for example in multimedia is rare.

Hi! I will be happy to do a live demo of NextDeploy if there's an opportunity.

I can demonstrate:

• VPS deployment

• Cloudflare deployment

VPS Demo Requirements

To keep the demo realistic, an audience member should have:

• A provisioned VPS

• SSH access (private key) to that server

• A domain name that they manage (with DNS access)

• A Next.js project to deploy (or I can provide a template project if they don't have one). I also have a full-stack web template available if needed.

Cloudflare Demo Requirements

The participant should have:

• A Cloudflare account

• A Cloudflare API token with DNS Edit permissions

• Cloudflare Workers access enabled

• A domain managed through Cloudflare

This way, we can perform a real deployment using the attendee's own infrastructure instead of a preconfigured environment.

Am not a Go or next-js user/developer. However, would you be able to deploy:

It is unclear if enough people would be willing to support a LUG server
for one year, but if so would give many people an opportunity to improve
their skills in this area. Server could also be used to run other
services for the LUG. If it was deployed, would be happy to add an API
so that one could build registration apps for mobile phones and the
command line.

Ok. Do people have preferences on where to host the VPS?

Anyone willing to contribute to the yearly VPS cost?
Anyone else willing to manage the server (no previous experience
required, so suitable for people wanting to learn how to manage web
services)?

Are there other services people would want other than meeting
registration? We may want a bot to synchronize between different
messaging services? Maybe also mailing list and website.

Have you looked into Caddy + GitHub Actions for deployment? I use it for personal projects and a work setup, and it works great.

Simple, and you can deploy anything that can be containerized. I can create a feature branch with the setup on https://github.com/ilugc/register-ilugc
All you need is the VPS info, and you'll be set.
