Hi Benson,

Yes, we do have a plan to meet on 7th. Paul was checking on options to see if it's possible to have another place for meet up. I hope he can reply today for more info.

Best,
Cornelius

Are there any preferences from people who would
like to attend? Starting a bit earlier would be better for me.

Are there technical things people want to try out or demonstrate?

An interesting Linux use case:

Is there a cost or expected price? Nairobi LUG has generally tried to be economical.

This is very cool. Sounds similar (?) in principle
to what tunapanda institute⁰ do. Maybe one of
these days you guys can go check them out?

Here's a link - related to contributing to FOSS -
from the FSF newsletter that is worth viewing:

In this presentation on a practical use of software freedom, GNU/Linux
sysadmin Romeo S. explores how to delve into a codebase written in a
language that you have never used to make the changes that you want.
From the very basic installation of software to becoming familiar with
the codebase and its language, Romeo takes viewers all the way through
making changes to a program. For those that missed the original talk
at LibrePlanet 2024 (or want to rewatch it), you can now view the
recording of this informative lecture on MediaGoblin.

I'm curious. With termux, you essentially can do
this, and much more. So with self-hosting, do you
view locally on the local network? Or is the goal
to expose the website to the internet, assuming
you don't have a VPS (which allows SSH remote
port-forwarding). Regardless. No spoilers! But
after the meeting, this seems to me like a good
blog article.

> - Technical topic from the audience - 30 minutes

Can't make it for this month's meet-up. But in
more positive news, I joined the GNU guile
(besides Emacs and Python) teams for upstream
guix:

https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/pulls/6827#issuecomment-11142983

There's a GCD in place (still in it's discussion
phase) that talks about how guix teams work:

https://codeberg.org/guix/guix-consensus-documents/pulls/11/files

Eventually, that's something I'd like to one day
talk about :)

That sounds like a great topic @bonface...@gmail.com ! We can definitely organize an online meetup in the course of the month for you to talk about it.
Would you be up for it?

This is very informative! Thanks for this link.

We are planning to have such sessions to enable people to contribute to other FLOSS projects and @Cornelius is the first one. No one should miss it.

This is cool. I didn't know that Tunapanda got featured on APC's list. We'll reach out to them ASAP. What do you think? @Cornelius and @Benson Muite ?

@Benson We plan on starting at 3.

If anyone is interested in sharing something technical, we can definitely organize lightning talks.
If there won't be enough time, we can hold online meetings for them to get their stuff out.

This is very interesting. I think we should definitely compile a list of such institutes and organizations to visit and have chats with.

For long term sustainable community driven projects, one needs transparency about
the funding model for venue and refreshments if any. See:

Given these will likely be where many local FOSS contributions come from, it would
be good to get more such people involved.

That's very true. Thanks for linking to that post. Thanks for bringing up the topic of sustainability.
It is true that sustainability is important.

To engage with more and better stakeholders we do need to show that we are professional.

Can we talk about it on the 7th then we can update everyone about it?

In terms of transparency, I like how GNU Guix run things:

https://guix.gnu.org/en/donate/

And they completed one of their funding drives:

https://guix.gnu.org/en/blog/2026/result-of-sustain-and-strengthen-fundraising/

For now, once I crack the 2FA with the NairobiLUG
gmail account, steps I can think of:

- Agree on a admin of said gmail account. Clarity
who want to take up the role of admin'ing things
after community consensus; not as some badge of
honor vibes, but as a badge of
responsibility/ownership.

- Open a libera account. Maybe m-pesa/bank. With
the latter, I don't know how that would work.

- Track everything in a public (h)ledger account
or something similar that's FOSS. Should people
want their names private, use anonymous
identities. Do regular a/c stuff in a repo.
Commits can track contribs, for free. Just
enforce commit style.

- For funding drives, communicate progress in form
of a blog post like demo'd above.

- For money usage, agree on what we want and how
to spend that money. And with money usage, blog
about it.

Now all this stuff could be made easier if their
is a proved FOSS non-profit Kenyan org. Does one
exist?

Abit too soon since the hang-out is this weekend.
But we can try. Maybe in future, if presentations
is something we can get people to do, perhaps
agree to have a 2 week window for making these
CfPs?

Not sure all stakeholders will be there, such as Munyoki. In person discussions
are good, but for inclusivity, not the best for decisions.

Not sure if we need a leader. Maybe we could add a page to the website with
a list of places where people use FOSS operating systems? Identifying places
where we could introduce FOSS or contributing to FOSS and then having a meeting
there is helpful.

Had previously registered the domain lug.or.ke with the idea that other places
could use a sub domain, e.g. nairobi.lug.or.ke, utawala.lug.or.ke etc.

Good Morning good people.
I will be happy to attend this as my first meeting at NaiLUG. Given a chance I can speak briefly about the Open Source Ecosystem Enabler project that is being implemented by ITU and the National OSPO that we are helping the Ministry of ICT to implement (and opportunities for participation).

Best regards and I hope that I will make it.

That's true. I think we should do it on a separate thread to ensure everyone can follow the conversation easily.

This is a great idea. I'll have opened an issue on Github already, here it is: https://github.com/nairobilug/nairobilug.or.ke/issues/221

+1 . It can also work with the current domain. The subdomains won't be as cool as when having lug.or.ke only :)

Feel free to put it in writing if you want to.
That would make for a very interesting LUG blog,
yeah?

Is this project, and all how it's done in the
