Nice info, although their free may  mean no guarantees..
I have a bone to pick though, Python is not a 'relatively new' programming language. It happens to be about 4 years older than Java, only that it wasn't hyped as much.. :)

Thanks for the info but my greatest miss giving is the lack of shell access. And more so libraries in your dev environment pulled from the Python package index.  Or should those libs be copied over as eggs? Not sure about this.

I'm yet to explore the platform, I was just tipped by a friend this evening. But I appreciate that at least they are trying, it can provide a good playing ground for newbies.

Also, FYI, Google App Engine is now supporting Relational Database, check https://developers.google.com/cloud-sql/ I noticed that some of us are not yet updated ;)

Sorry but these guys look like they are more of marketers. Use
paid-for services like www.webfaction.com to really understand why.
Also the fact that they have disabled shell access leaves a lot to be
desired.

P.S: I have used the Python packaging index via setuptools
(easy_install and now pip) and I think they are an excellent
distribution mechanism for Python modules.

Hey Guys,

You can test out your Django apps on appfog.com and heroku.com for free.

They do not provide shell access for using pip or easy_install though.

Still great for testing and doing demos.

Also have a look at https://www.openshift.com. They claim that a Drupal site running on their free tier can serve 15k visitors, 15pages/second. Even if your Django app achieves half of that, it's not a bad for a freebie.
