THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE 1999 CONSTITUTION HIS ADMINISTRATION BEQUEATHED TO NIGERIA – General Abdulsalami Abubakar Declares

The Guardian News has expanded its recent spotlight on the 1999 Constitution by taking its crew to Minna, Niger State, to have a one-on-one interview with the architect of Nigeria’s 4th Republic and author of the widely repudiated and rejected 1999 Constitution, General Abdulsalami Abubakar. A fortnight earlier, the same The Guardian reported on the ongoing Constitutional Force Majeure (CFM) spearheaded by the Indigenous Nationalities Alliance for Self-determination (NINAS) that is designed to culminate in the jettisoning of the 1999 Constitution and commencement of a political transition from a Unitary Nigeria that has failed in all aspects of national endeavor. An exclusive interview with the NINAS’ Secretary-General, Tony Nnadi, elucidated the urgency of bringing the unworkable status quo to its final terminus by stopping the stampede to the INEC-scheduled 2023 general elections. This seems to be the major impetus that made the press crew to seek the viewpoint of the creator of the 1999 Constitution that is now being blamed to be the cause of all the woes of today’s Unitary Nigeria.

Many of us now feel relieved that, finally, the Dr. Frankenstein who created the monster that has seized Africa’s most populous country and willfully set it on a path to perdition by the issuance of Decree No 24 of 1999, which is also called the 1999 Constitution has been forced to open his sealed mouth and speak to the public. Thus far, the retired general has succeeded in staying above the fray by his studious reticence in engaging on the nonstop contradictions that have plagued the imposed fraudulent 1999 Constitution since its inception 23 years ago. Let’s laud the press team from The Guardian for smoking out the chief architect and mastermind of all the woes of today’s Unitary Nigeria, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, to proffer some answers for his deeds while at the apex of power in Abuja.

It is funny to listen to General Abubakar lecture his compatriots to shun zoning while the 1999 Constitution he foisted on everyone is a legal codification of the so-called “quota system” and allocation of nation’s largesse based on mere landmass. In trying to minimize the impact of his personal role in shaping the 4th Republic’s politics, the general claimed that he is no “politician” and thus did things differently from how politicians would them. The old Nigeria Army game of blaming politicians to distract from their woeful failures. In which military book did General Abdulsalami Abubakar read that ruling juntas can introduce a democratic national constitution by issuance of a decree?

On why Nigeria’s unity and national cohesion are still a mirage, the former military leader said, “We are fixated on regional politics, in thinking for our village, in thinking of our state, in thinking for our region. You meet people, instead of thinking about Nigeria, we are thinking about our village, state and region before you talk about Nigeria. Again, you find that quite a number of politicians think that way, I think this is our basic problem. If like members of the Armed Forces, every politician will think of Nigeria, as his constituency and think about Nigeria, Nigeria will be a better place.” It is important to remind readers that the Nigerian military has ruled over Nigeria since January 1966. When the uniformed officers were not sitting on the saddle, they had made sure that the ship of state was run according to the decrees/constitutions they imposed. The 1979 and 1999 Constitutions are examples.

If what has been said by General Abdulsalami Abubakar is the best defense he can afford today for propping up an imposition of a fraudulent ordinance over his compatriots since the past 23 years, we should now have cause to believe that the minders of today’s Unitary Nigeria may have finally read the handwriting on the wall. Let the CFM proceed to its logical conclusion as designed by NINAS!
