
Moscow unveiled a statue honoring Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s former president and anti-apartheid leader, at the intersection of Michurinsky Prospect and Ramensky Boulevard in a square named after him.

It was created by sculptor Mikhail Baskakov and commissioned by the Russian Military-Historical Society with Moscow Government support, the monument blends bronze, aluminum, and mosaic smalt.
It symbolizes strengthening Russia-South Africa ties and Russia’s engagement with African nations, paying tribute to Mandela’s legacy of fighting for equality, justice, and human rights.
The unveiling ceremony included African diplomats, Russian officials, and cultural figures. A film about Mandela’s life, was also produced by the Russian-African Club of Lomonosov Moscow State University.
