Ifeanyi C. Ejiofor, Esq. renowned lawyer and human rights advocate is a man who speaks truth to power no matter whose ox is gored. In this interview, he bares his mind on sundry issues of the moment in Nigeria and the recently concluded governorship election in Anambra.
So many reactions have trailed the recent statement by American President Donald Trump about Christian Genocide in Nigeria. Some have criticized such while others said he spoke the true reality. What do you think is the reason that statement is rattling some people in Nigeria?
The big questions is how did a nation once called the Giant of Africa become so helpless before the monsters it created? Let’s not hide behind pretense. Boko Haram, ISWAP, deadly cattle-rustling militias- Fulani herdsmen and bandits of various labels are not strangers from outer space. The majority were imported while many were born and bred here, in our soil, in our politics, and in the greed of men who thought they could control chaos. It began with whispers about “using them” for elections or intimidation. Now, those same creators watch in silence as their Frankenstein monsters dictate the rhythm of our national sorrow. Today, vast parts of Borno, Yobe, Zamfara, Katsina, Niger, Benue, Kaduna, and even down to Enugu, Ebonyi and Plateau are either under siege or partially conquered. Villages once bustling with laughter now echo only with gunshots and wailing. Ask the people of Baga, where Boko Haram turned a fishing town to ashes; ask Zangon Kataf in Kaduna, where attackers have massacred families in single nights; or the displaced farmers of Otukpo in Benue who must pay “levies” to till the soil their fathers died protecting. The truth hits differently when you meet the victims. In Shiroro and Munya LGAs of Niger State, bandits have effectively become landlords, collecting taxes and dictating who enters or leaves. Birnin Gwari in Kaduna has repeatedly been the scene of mass kidnappings and attacks. And yet the country pretends it’s all “under control.”
Meanwhile, in Abuja and other cities, politicians still walk free, some of them the very enablers and financiers of this chaos. Retired security chiefs have publicly admitted how the seeds of these monsters were sown within political circles, but the silence that follows each revelation is louder than any gunfire. The truth is that Nigeria has been in a dangerous relationship with denial, and like every toxic relationship, it is costing us lives. The irony deepens when we see “negotiations” between state officials and bandits played out on television. You see men with AK-47s slung across their shoulders being treated like peace envoys, while government representatives smile awkwardly beside them. In any sane country, such a public surrender of sovereignty would spark outrage; here it has become a national culture of shame. And now, America sneezes and Nigeria catches a fever. When Donald Trump recently declared his intention to “wipe out the monsters committing genocide against Christians in Nigeria”, you could almost hear the political class jump in unison. Suddenly, we became born-again defenders of sovereignty, those that failed to protect children in Chibok, girls in Dapchi, or farmers in Benue. How convenient! Let’s be clear: the noise isn’t about patriotism. It’s about self-preservation. Too many people have turned insecurity into a thriving enterprise: those who negotiate ransoms, those who supply arms, those who collect “security votes” without securing anything, and those who profit politically from fear. The prospect of a foreign force dismantling this network terrifies them, not because they love Nigeria, but because it would collapse their cash cow.The world knew the scale of our tragedy long before any single politician made headlines. Human-rights organisations and investigators have documented widespread atrocities and urged accountability. Thousands of lives have been lost, millions displaced, and entire communities erased from maps. The evidence is on every Nigerian lip, every burnt village, and every weeping IDP camp.During one of my visits to an IDP camp in Abuja earlier this year, I saw toddlers, one, two, three years old, who had no memory of home or parents. Some were born in the camp and might die there if nothing changes. I left that camp broken. Nigeria has happened to them, and it is shameful that our leaders can still sleep at night. So, when Trump talks tough, instead of shouting “sovereignty!” maybe we should ask ourselves: sovereignty over what? Over ungoverned territories? Over mass graves? Or over a nation that now negotiates with killers in broad daylight? Those crying foul are simply afraid of losing their political bargaining chip. The monsters some reared to fight their perceived enemies have outgrown their control. They now decide who farms, who lives, and who rules. If Nigeria truly wants peace, it must stop romanticising terror and start confronting it. Foreign help should not be a taboo word when our sovereignty has already been auctioned to bandits. What the world offers is not colonisation, it is rescue. The terms and scope of any intervention should be discussed and diplomatically agreed. Nigeria’s security services must play a pivotal role in directing operations against these common enemies. Nobody is coming to dismantle Nigeria’s democratic institutions. No! Nigeria truly needs help. Until we summon the courage to punish the enablers, expose the sponsors, and secure our borders, we will keep mourning the same dead under different headlines.

Femi:

I also agree with the premise of Ifeanyi Ejiofor Esq. for the most part but not in its entirety.
What I can not understand is why well meaning and highly educated Nigerians like
Attorney Ejiofor and many other Nigerian leaders believe that the solution to the security
problems in Nigeria is an invasion of our motherland by Donald Trump's US armed forces.

A few questions follow:

1) Are these folks cheering for USA's help in Nigeria not aware that--
the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand (under the auspices
of "The Five Eyes" global security network have been working with the
Nigerian Armed Forces in northern Nigeria to help eradicate the Boko Haram
(BK). Even though these efforts have helped in curtailing the activities of the BK, remnants
of this deadly terrorist organization and its offshoot still remains.
The ammunitions the USA sold to Nigeria also came with restrictions of where in Nigeria
they could be used. It is not a big surprise to find that BK terrorists dislodged
from one region of the Savannah Forest end in up territories designated as No go areas
for the deployment of ammunition from the USA. To make matters worse, while
one arm of the USA, the Pentagon was trying to help Nigeria, another arm of
the same country was funnelling money through USAID to the BK and so other
terrorist organization in the country.

2) If the USA and her other well meaning fellow countries in the "Five Eyes" have not succeeded
in their efforts in eradicating the BK menace in Nigeria, what is the basis for the optimism
that the USA can get this desired out come going in solo "with guns blazing?"

3) When was the last time in the last 4 decades the desired out come for the benefit
of the citizens of countries who have been victims of USA's invasion, which are often
characterized as humanitarian missions? I have not been able to find one instance
in which such invasion led to peace and prosperity----Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya,
Kuwait etc. come to mind.

4) The premise of ongoing selective Christian Genocide that led to Donald Trump's threat of invading Nigeria was based on false propaganda promoted by IPOB sympathizers and funders in the USA. The real data negates this
assertion. Please see the data from the US based Armed Conflict Location and Event Data.

Nigeria does not need the USA's interference in her internal affairs!

Bye,

Ola

What the data says

Data collected by the U.S.-based Armed Conflict Location and Event Data program shows 20,409 deaths from 11,862 attacks against civilians in Nigeria between January 2020 and this September.

Of those, 385 attacks were “targeted events against Christians … where Christian identity of the victim was a reported factor,” resulting in 317 deaths, ACLED says.

In the same period, there were 417 deaths recorded among Muslims in 196 attacks.

While religion has been a factor in Nigeria’s security crisis, its “large population and vast geographic differences make it impossible to speak of religious violence as motivating all (the) violence,” said Ladd Serwat, senior Africa analyst at ACLED.

Analysts reject claims of genocide

Analysts say Nigeria’s complex security dynamics do not meet the legal definition of a genocide. The U.N. convention on preventing genocide calls it acts “committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.”

“If anything, what we are witnessing is mass killings, which are not targeted against a specific group,” said Olajumoke Ayandele, an assistant professor at New York University’s Center for Global Affairs who specializes in conflict studies. “The drumming-up of genocide might worsen the situation because everyone is going to be on alert.”
Chidi Odinkalu, a professor at Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and a former chairman of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, said Nigerian authorities, however, need to address the rampant violence."

DOK,

I cannot recall the interviewee categorically supporting invasion of Nigeria by the US. I'll have another read.
Of course, I do not support the invasion myself and I doubt very much if it will ever happen, I however believe that Ifeanyi articulated the reasons that brought us to the point where a foreign government had to threaten invasion before our government would put their skates on. It shouldn't have to be so.

The complicity of our politicians, military and other looters who see the continuation of the security breaches and unrest as a sort of cash cow to milk dry needs to be tackled, and tackled ruthlessly, by DSS, NIA and other intelligence services tasked with defending the nation.

It's a shame that it had to come to a foreign government threatening to invade before all the stakeholders (and possible guilty parties by complicity) find reason to be running helter skelter. It's quite a shame!

Femi:

I can understand the point you're making.

But is there any other word to describe the threatened action of the country
of one nation describing another one as

 "Disgraceful Nigeria--we're
going in "with guns blazing" to stop Christian genocide without
being invited to do so --other than an INVASION?"

I personally consider this statement as an Insult and
lack of respect for Nigeria's sovereignty.

An American journalist's reaction to  Trump's threat to invade
Nigeria this way: "He must be going crazy." I agree.

I also strongly believe that Nigeria can prosper without the
USA. It's time the FGN change our current alliances with the rest
of the world. I believe the BAT administration is already working
on this task.

The USA as a nation, is no longer a friend of Nigeria--dating back
to the Obama years.

Bye,

Ola

DOK,

Don't tell me you're anti-corporate entity. You've always proven to be measured, reasonable and very pragmatic.

Dipo is a mentor of mine from his days in OAU. He also has a book called 'If I was cajoled to rule' published in 2019 which analysed the problems of Nigeria and proffered solutions. Some of the solutions such as harmonization of fx, removal of subsidy, student loan etc are currently being implemented by Tinubu's government. It's worth a read too.

DOK,

I agree with you totally that Trump is barking mad on his utterances on Nigeria and other issues.

Nigeria can be self-sufficient financially if we have leaders that are prudent and cerebral like Tinubu. I'm afraid the country may backslide back into mediocrity on his exit.
Nigeria should jettison the idea of dependency on aids, grants and such lasso usually in use by so-called developed world to control it's actions and inactions.

Yes, Nigeria's existing alliances and terms thereof needs to be re-negotiated and a win+win basis should be the minimum standard on which we stand. For God's sake, a population of 250million is no joke and the resources (natural, human and capital) at Nigeria's disposal is immense.
We just need to get our act together and maintain the Tinubu trajectory.

I concur totally with Attorney Ifeanyi Ejiofor on the piece.

Dummy And Thief Of London Called Femi Olajide:

"Dipo is a mentor of mine from his days in OAU. He also has a book called 'If I was cajoled to rule' published in 2019 which analysed the problems of Nigeria and proffered solutions. Some of the solutions such as harmonization of fx, removal of subsidy, student loan" --- Dumb Protégé Called Femi

Solutions recommended by your dumb mentor called Dipo Otuyemi were authored and prescribed by the IMF and World Bank for Nigeria since Babangida regime, you idiot. They're recycled solutions of the IMF and World Bank, copied by your mentor to write a useless book. Removal of Subsidy and Harmonization of Forex solutions were part of the solutions originated by both IMF and World Bank and meant to strangulate Nigeria's economy since 1996 when Babangida devalued Nigeria's Naira for the first time in the history of Nigeria. Devaluation of the Naira was also part of their recommendations. I accused Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu who was Babangida's Minister of Finance in these forums several years ago, of implementing the IMF recommendations which he tried unsuccessfully to defend, citing South Korea. Of course, you've just heard of them from your mentor called Dipo, who copied them from IMF and used that to publish a useless book in 2019 that you're now recommending to Nigerians. But what do you know? You're just an empty head and a thief in London pirating goods.

You're a shame and an utter disgrace to your Ishan Nation.

Babangida is the architect of Nigeria’s economic woes. Nigeria hasn't been the same again since 1986 when he implemented the IMF and World Bank obnoxious recommendations through Naira Devaluation, SFEM and SAP. The Naira has been going down ever since 1986. But what do you know, you pirate of London called Femi Olajide?

Kayusee,

You've always come out to show everybody that you're sick upstairs and that you get the Oscar for foolishness everytime bar none.

First of all, I sent a corrective post to amend the term "mentor" to "mentee" which is at odd with what you said in your post in response to what was contained in DOK's post. That shows the state of your muddled mind.

Secondly, If harmonization of fx was recommended by IMF and world bank to strangulate Nigerian economy (SAP) during Babangida regime (circa 1985) and Dipo Otuyemi recommended same harmonisation 34 years later (2019). And you can boast now that you were against it back then because Kalu, the finance minister then, couldn't defend it on these fora. You're now supporting the same policy of harmonisation under Tinubu, right? What does that say about your judgement back in 1985 and then at 2023 when Tinubu implemented it? Basically, it means your judgement sucked then you're one of the fools that derailed structural adjustment programme (SAP) which could have put Nigeria on an even keel since the late 19880s.

Kayusee, you just keep on showing everyone that you're an empty barrel, one of the ones who held Nigeria back for about 35 years.

For your information, Dipo would have been in secondary school or just entering university then at about age 16 years old.

If fuel subsidy removal was recommended back during Babangida, and on your recommendation to Kalu, it was not implemented, why are you in support now under Tinubu?

Kayusee, you're as fake as a three pound note. It's surprising that you hadn't claimed that you recommended it to IMF and world bank, and you decided to shoot them in the foot by forcing Babangida to discard the policy on your protest to Kalu, the finance minister. You imbecilic and idiotic moron.

For your information, Dipo Otuyemi is not an economist nor a seasoned government policy maker. Yet, he articulated the unsustainability of subsidy, the ensuing wastage and leakages it leads to. He mentioned the need where subsidy can be useful in an economy(example: for production as against consumption). He mentioned the UK diesel subsidy for farmers which is used for production of cheap agricultural products for food and export arc etc...You wouldn't know that, would you, Kayusee? Dummy!

The title of the book says it all 'If I was cajoled to rule'. Just a young man dreaming about how grown men like you got it wrong for decades, sitting on internet forums giving nonsense untested advice that you probably googled without understanding the basic.

The book is not an academic exercise, it's just a simple book about a young man's dream and proffering of common sense solutions for day to day problem in Nigeria.

Dipo mentioned to me that he just wondered why old men like you messed up Nigeria, while very simple solutions were available to lay a solid foundation for his generation. That was impetus to writing the book.

Kayusee, you've always been an empty barrel, you still are one and you will always be one until your dying days.

Shame!

Regards,

Femi Olajide

Kayusee,

You're a moron.

If those policies was wrong then, under Babangida, and you were against it, what has changed since then to make those policies of harmonisation of fx market and fuel subsidy removal palatable to you now under Tinubu?

Stupid idiot, make your case!
