LADOKE AKINTOLA: THE MAN WHO BETRAYED CORRUPTION

Preamble

Few days ago, when Professor Yemi Osinbajo made his presidential ambition known publicly, some people began to call him names. The worst of it all was comparing him with Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, a political associate of Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo. They claimed Osinbajo betrayed his political godfather just as Akintola betrayed his boss, Awolowo. I have been hearing this claim since I grew up to understand issues of life. However, as I grew up to study in the area of history, my curiosity pushed me to research into the lives of the two great men involved, Akintola and Awolowo. For the purpose of clarity on the issue of betrayal between the two, I will present to you my findings. 

How They Met

Akintola started his career as a teacher in a Baptist School. He left the School in order not to become a betrayer. How? He was the one who spearheaded a protest against the poor treatment of the Nigerian Tutors who were in the school. The Whites could not swallow such "insolence", so they dismissed the Tutors involved but retained Akintola who himself was at the center of the issue. They did that because he was brilliant and influential among the parents. Moreover, there was no replacement for the subject he was taking. They increased his salary and emoluments. BUT HE RESIGNED immediately in order to stand with his friends who were dismissed. That was the beginning of his freedom fighting.

He then left the School for an offer with a Newspaper House. He began to use the opportunity he got there to voice out his opinions on Nigeria Independence. He was gaining more fame in his new job. He then went for further studies abroad knowing fully well that he would not be able to fight the Colonial Masters unless he studied well. He became a lawyer. It was his boldness and prowess in journalism that endeared him to Awolowo. They both became freedom fighters and they brought several like-minded people together to form a civil organization for the Yorubas. Later, as a requirement for gaining Independence, political parties must be formed. As at that time, people like Nnamdi Azikiwe and others from the East were also active in fighting for Independence. Only the Northerners were not ready for the Independence. So, Akintola, Awolowo, and other well meaning Yorubas formed a political party. It was Akintola who was saddled with the responsibility of writing the Constitution for the party while Awolowo was made the party leader. 

The Real Issue

Let me spare some political stories of the competency of both eminent leaders. Awolowo became the Western Premier but the death of his deputy brought Akintola to that office. Later, Awolowo was aspiring to become the Head of the Central Government. Due to some laxities, he lost but he needed to stay in Lagos, the then seat of power to form opposition government. Akintola had earlier being handed over to as the Western Premier. He was working assiduously for the betterment of the Westerners. PROBLEM BEGAN when he discovered some funds were not remitted to the purse of the Western Government. He went ahead to block them. He discovered some Party members were collecting loans from the Government without repayment. He stopped that as well. HE NEVER KNEW that the said tax on beverages was being paid directly to the account of the wife of his predecessor. When Awolowo came back from Lagos to Ibadan, he summoned Akintola three times in a night and he went the three times. Awolowo was furious that Akintola blocked the payment of the tax on beverages to Mama's account (Awolowo's wife). He was also furious that Akintola blocked the loans being taken by the party loyalists but were never paid. When Akintola complained that they were not paying back the loans, Awolowo said that is the benefit they get as party loyalists. Akintola then said Awolowo as an elder should have told him the details of those things earlier being his former deputy. Awolowo commanded that he should go and restore those benefits. Akintola simply replied that such action would lead to paucity of funds on the side of the Government. AWOLOWO ASKED HIM TO RESIGN with immediate effect. In essence, AWOLOWO WANTED TO BE IN CONTROL OF THE WESTERN GOVERNMENT even though he has ceased being the Premier. The prominent Yoruba Kings held a meeting with them to settle the issue. They asked Akintola to prostrate and begged Awolowo. He did, but Awolowo insisted he must vacate the Premier Seat, and walked out on the prominent Yoruba Kings. That was when Akintola rose to say would Awolowo turn himself to God. The Kings were unhappy with the situation as they left. That was the beginning of the political problem in the Western Region even till now.

If I may ask  WHERE IS THE BETRAYAL BEING TALKED ABOUT? WHO IS THE BETRAYER? If you call Akintola a betrayer, then HE BETRAYED CORRUPTION. He fought for the Masses. He would not support public funds to be diverted. IS HE A BETRAYER? 

NOTE

I checked my facts with many sources both written documents and oral narrations before I wrote. The sources are mostly from outside Ogbomosho, the Hometown of Akintola. If you know A VERIFIED contrary opinion, please I am open to further learning. I wrote this to clear the air on the wrong impression being carried around. Wow!, I never knew this about Akintola. Nevertheless, I doubt this story because this fellow wrote and made these hefty charges against Awo without citing any authority, yet he had the temerity to not only append PhD to his name, underneath a mere opinion, but also to dare any challengers to produce verified evidence if they desire to impeach him. Does this guy, Ogundipe, think that folks are stupid or illiterate?

On Osinbajo and Tinubu, it makes no sense that Tinubu or any one expects him to yield to Tinubu at this stage of his political career. Tinubu was his boss and likely nominated him to Buhari but the truth is that, after almost 8 years as VP of Nigeria, Osinbajo is superior to Tinubu by any political and administrative measure. Osinbajo is closer to being President of Nigeria than Tinubu would ever be (Tinubu will never be president even if nominated by APC). Osinbajo showed the capacity to lead boldly on the few instances that Buhari handed power to him, so there is no doubt that he is ready and able to be President if elected. Were Tinubu not an opportunistic and criminally minded politician, he would have been nurturing his protege's pursuit of the presidency from the background, not antagonizing and coveting it.

At that time, Akala destroyed Awolowo’s statue in Ibadan, these two guys were supporting his action which, I strongly believed, was engineered by the high-priest of corruption, named Obasanjo.

I’m guessing Imperial is backing a candidate right now, and his actually is to discredit Tinubu. But why use Awo to do his dirty job?

I have no reason not to agree with his presentation. Anybody with a “verified contrary opinion” should present it or keep quite.

 

Corruption didn’t just grow out of the wind in Nigeria. It’s foundation was actually laid by the founding fathers cheered/egged on by our corrupt Society. Corruption is one the reasons Nzeogwu et al adduced for overthrowing the first Republic.

To wit, none of the arguments against the author have provided no single contrary facts that the dispute by fiat.

That doesn’t mean that disagreeing is wrong or unacceptable.

It means that one has to advance facts to argue against ‘facts’ that one contests.

You are right that it is irrelevant whether the poster has a Ph.D or not because nothing he wrote require academic citation. Indeed, most of the critical information - except that part about Akintola ‘writing the party constitution’ is already in Wikipedia.

And, as you said, no tree exists without roots. And, Awolowo, as a founding father, is part of the tap root of our country.

And that includes corruption.

Personally, I don’t expect any better from the contestants, so far.

When a PhD holder writes something and appends PhD to his name, underneath the article, he/she is conveying to the recipients of the article that it was properly researched and constitutes an expert’s position. What Ogundipe wrote is not commonly knowledge, and since he didn’t apply academic methodology in writing it, it is his personal opinion and he should not have appended his PhD underneath it. Equally, no one needs to follow or honor his hollow and dishonest demand for a “verified contrary opinion” in rejecting his piece since he lacked the academic discipline to have written in a verifiable format.

Coker Report: For Your Information:

On June 20, 1962, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the Prime Minister of the Federation, appointed a Commission headed by Justice George Baptist Ayodola Coker, to inquire into the financial and investment policies and practices, the management and the business operations of six statutory corporations in Western Nigeria since October 1, 1954.

The affected companies are Western Region Marketing Board, the Western Nigeria Development Corporation, the Western Region Finance Corporation and the Western Region Housing Corporation. Other members of the panel were Mr. Oladiran Booyamin Kassim, Acting Judge of the High Court of Eastern Nigeria; and Mr. Akintola Williams (100), a Lagos chartered accountant.

The Commission sat for 92 days and had 50 witnesses. Chief Awolowo who on November 2, 1962, had been charged again with conspiring to overthrow the Federal Government by force had refused to give evidence before the Coker Commission of Inquiry. From Lagos Prison, when awaiting trial, he sent a letter to the Chairman of the inquiry, Dr. Coker, saying that he had come to the conclusion that no useful purpose would be served by his further participation in the inquiry. The inquiry did not find Chief Awolowo guilty.

It made only two recommendations that the Western Nigeria Marketing Board should take over immediately all properties of the National Investment and Properties Company Ltd, that the Board should take steps to recover from the Action Group a sum of N8, 000,000 which Action Group had received from the National Investment and Properties Company between April 18, 1958 and May 31, 1962. In a White Paper issued with the report, the Federal Government endorsed it. In a statement signed by Chief Awolowo, the Action Group rejected the report.

The party alleged that it was "produced with unprecedented ruthless speed and wanton disregard for facts". As long as Odua Investment Company exists those clamouring for restructuring and regionalism are on solid ground. If other zones of this country are encouraged to develop on their own, there will be less dependence on the centre. And the way we are going now, there may be nothing left to share again in the centre. In short we are heading towards a situation where You Are On Your Own.

On June 20, 1962, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the Prime Minister of the Federation, appointed a Commission headed by Justice George Baptist Ayodola Coker, to inquire into the financial and investment policies and practices, the management and the business operations of six statutory corporations in Western Nigeria since October 1, 1954.

The affected companies are Western Region Marketing Board, the Western Nigeria Development Corporation, the Western Region Finance Corporation and the Western Region Housing Corporation. Other members of the panel were Mr. Oladiran Booyamin Kassim, Acting Judge of the High Court of Eastern Nigeria; and Mr. Akintola Williams (100), a Lagos chartered accountant.

The Commission sat for 92 days and had 50 witnesses. Chief Awolowo who on November 2, 1962, had been charged again with conspiring to overthrow the Federal Government by force had refused to give evidence before the Coker Commission of Inquiry. From Lagos Prison, when awaiting trial, he sent a letter to the Chairman of the inquiry, Dr. Coker, saying that he had come to the conclusion that no useful purpose would be served by his further participation in the inquiry. The inquiry did not find Chief Awolowo guilty.

It made only two recommendations that the Western Nigeria Marketing Board should take over immediately all properties of the National Investment and Properties Company Ltd, that the Board should take steps to recover from the Action Group a sum of N8, 000,000 which Action Group had received from the National Investment and Properties Company between April 18, 1958 and May 31, 1962. In a White Paper issued with the report, the Federal Government endorsed it. In a statement signed by Chief Awolowo, the Action Group rejected the report.

The party alleged that it was "produced with unprecedented ruthless speed and wanton disregard for facts". Such a reference is, necessarily, validated or confirmed by at least one independent source. 

Thus, a reference is a document or source that contains a verified or established fact, such as exposure to COVID-19 virus causes COVID-19 symptoms and is validated by one or more independent source.

What you are contriving as a ‘reference’ is concurrent individual opinions, either personally acquired or read in the newspaper - such as you and I had when these events under discussion is going on. Even the Coker Report is not a reference because it is a mere collection of testimonies that could have been lies. At least, the Coker Commission did not put those who testified under a polygraph test.

Merely repeating hearsay from those who heard the same story you heard at the time, no matter how highly placed, is just hearsay; it is not a reference!

     If one is not a mystic one does not have proof for those worlds and would be cowardly to accept them; all that one can do is have an open mind that many things may exist that given our methodology that perceives with our physical senses, we do not know.

     Whereas we must rely on our senses we also know that our senses sometimes show us what is not there (illusions), thus, the need to question the stimuli from the physical environment picked up by our senses.

    For now, I am going to allow the logical positivist, empiricist and scientist in me to prevail. I am not going to do what Soren Kierkegaard suggested and make a leap of faith and accept what I do not see, God.

      I will limit myself to the world of the here and now and see whether it really can make a convincing argument that this empirical world is all there is to existence; I am going to suspend my judgement and accept Richard Dawkins barking that the clock was made by a blind watch maker, even though something tells me that there needs to be intelligence outside of matter, space and time to make that watch that he talks a lot about; I do not see how a monkey can keep banging away at a type writer and pound out William Shakespeare’s immortal plays!

I, read all the books of another English writer, like Evelyn’s Underhill, while I was in Form 2 in secondary school before I became a seeking Catholic and learned all the philosophy, logic, and science thereafter in the university. It set a path for my life… knowledgewise.

Preamble

Few days ago, when Professor Yemi Osinbajo made his presidential ambition known publicly, some people began to call him names. The worst of it all was comparing him with Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, a political associate of Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo. They claimed Osinbajo betrayed his political godfather just as Akintola betrayed his boss, Awolowo. I have been hearing this claim since I grew up to understand issues of life. However, as I grew up to study in the area of history, my curiosity pushed me to research into the lives of the two great men involved, Akintola and Awolowo. For the purpose of clarity on the issue of betrayal between the two, I will present to you my findings. 

How They Met

Akintola started his career as a teacher in a Baptist School. He left the School in order not to become a betrayer. How? He was the one who spearheaded a protest against the poor treatment of the Nigerian Tutors who were in the school. The Whites could not swallow such "insolence", so they dismissed the Tutors involved but retained Akintola who himself was at the center of the issue. They did that because he was brilliant and influential among the parents. Moreover, there was no replacement for the subject he was taking. They increased his salary and emoluments. BUT HE RESIGNED immediately in order to stand with his friends who were dismissed. That was the beginning of his freedom fighting.

He then left the School for an offer with a Newspaper House. He began to use the opportunity he got there to voice out his opinions on Nigeria Independence. He was gaining more fame in his new job. He then went for further studies abroad knowing fully well that he would not be able to fight the Colonial Masters unless he studied well. He became a lawyer. It was his boldness and prowess in journalism that endeared him to Awolowo. They both became freedom fighters and they brought several like-minded people together to form a civil organization for the Yorubas. Later, as a requirement for gaining Independence, political parties must be formed. As at that time, people like Nnamdi Azikiwe and others from the East were also active in fighting for Independence. Only the Northerners were not ready for the Independence. So, Akintola, Awolowo, and other well meaning Yorubas formed a political party. It was Akintola who was saddled with the responsibility of writing the Constitution for the party while Awolowo was made the party leader. 

The Real Issue

Let me spare some political stories of the competency of both eminent leaders. Awolowo became the Western Premier but the death of his deputy brought Akintola to that office. Later, Awolowo was aspiring to become the Head of the Central Government. Due to some laxities, he lost but he needed to stay in Lagos, the then seat of power to form opposition government. Akintola had earlier being handed over to as the Western Premier. He was working assiduously for the betterment of the Westerners. PROBLEM BEGAN when he discovered some funds were not remitted to the purse of the Western Government. He went ahead to block them. He discovered some Party members were collecting loans from the Government without repayment. He stopped that as well. HE NEVER KNEW that the said tax on beverages was being paid directly to the account of the wife of his predecessor. When Awolowo came back from Lagos to Ibadan, he summoned Akintola three times in a night and he went the three times. Awolowo was furious that Akintola blocked the payment of the tax on beverages to Mama's account (Awolowo's wife). He was also furious that Akintola blocked the loans being taken by the party loyalists but were never paid. When Akintola complained that they were not paying back the loans, Awolowo said that is the benefit they get as party loyalists. Akintola then said Awolowo as an elder should have told him the details of those things earlier being his former deputy. Awolowo commanded that he should go and restore those benefits. Akintola simply replied that such action would lead to paucity of funds on the side of the Government. AWOLOWO ASKED HIM TO RESIGN with immediate effect. In essence, AWOLOWO WANTED TO BE IN CONTROL OF THE WESTERN GOVERNMENT even though he has ceased being the Premier. The prominent Yoruba Kings held a meeting with them to settle the issue. They asked Akintola to prostrate and begged Awolowo. He did, but Awolowo insisted he must vacate the Premier Seat, and walked out on the prominent Yoruba Kings. That was when Akintola rose to say would Awolowo turn himself to God. The Kings were unhappy with the situation as they left. That was the beginning of the political problem in the Western Region even till now.

If I may ask  WHERE IS THE BETRAYAL BEING TALKED ABOUT? WHO IS THE BETRAYER? If you call Akintola a betrayer, then HE BETRAYED CORRUPTION. He fought for the Masses. He would not support public funds to be diverted. IS HE A BETRAYER? 

NOTE

I checked my facts with many sources both written documents and oral narrations before I wrote. The sources are mostly from outside Ogbomosho, the Hometown of Akintola. If you know A VERIFIED contrary opinion, please I am open to further learning. I wrote this to clear the air on the wrong impression being carried around. When you posted the biased opinion from one Ogundipe, and you were challenged, you pointed us to the Coker Commission report.

Someone posted probably parts of the report, I’m guessing the summary which did not show any indictments of Awo.

You came back again referring us to the same report…….my question:

Please, don’t you think you should post the Coker Report in full texts so that we all can share in your knowledge?

I won’t lie, I read bits and pieces of the Coker report in the past, not the whole report, but as far as I have read including the parts posted by someone here, I did not read about any indictments.

Now another question:

Was there a court proceedings stemming out of those indictments you mentioned casually?

If so, please post the court proceedings.

Hope I sound civil enough.

 I can remember that top members of the Action Group namely : Samuel Tubosun Sonibare, Chief Alfred Rewane, Alhaji Sule Gbadamosi and Chief S O Lanlehin ( all associates of Chief Awolowo ) were corruptly & surreptitiously granted about over £6 million pounds by the Regional government in the name of their private company called Nigerian Investment Property Company ( NIPC) .

 Did you know that the popular Cocoa House in Ibadan, ( originally owned by a private company, the NIPC )was one of the several assets forfeited to the Western Region government by the  NIPC to offset the debt owed to the Western  Region ?

The fact that Awolowo government was indicted for corruption by the Coker Commission of Inquiry  in 1962 is settled  and gazetteed . What some of his top supporters were saying then is that the commission‘s  report should have been extended to cover the regime of his erstwhile  deputy, SL Akintola . Let’s stop hiding behind a needle if we truly like to move forward .

No Coker Commission mentioned a fight between Awo and Akintola over booty sharing.

The Coker Commission was about Western region’s holdings such as Nabani Estates which became WEMABOD, and all businesses that later morphed into Odua Investments.

No crime was found to have been committed, just some goose chase by the Destroyers of Nigeria led by Sardauna of Sokoto and his lapdog Balewa.

Any thinking mind knows that if there were frauds and money changing hands between Awo and associates, that would have been a legitimate excuse to jail Awo, not the trump up charges of treason.

Coker Commission’s recommendations are online for anyone to read.

Preamble

 

Few days ago, when Professor Yemi Osinbajo made his presidential ambition known publicly, some people began to call him names. The worst of it all was comparing him with Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, a political associate of Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo. They claimed Osinbajo betrayed his political godfather just as Akintola betrayed his boss, Awolowo. I have been hearing this claim since I grew up to understand issues of life. However, as I grew up to study in the area of history, my curiosity pushed me to research into the lives of the two great men involved, Akintola and Awolowo. For the purpose of clarity on the issue of betrayal between the two, I will present to you my findings. 

 

How They Met

Akintola started his career as a teacher in a Baptist School. He left the School in order not to become a betrayer. How? He was the one who spearheaded a protest against the poor treatment of the Nigerian Tutors who were in the school. The Whites could not swallow such "insolence", so they dismissed the Tutors involved but retained Akintola who himself was at the center of the issue. They did that because he was brilliant and influential among the parents. Moreover, there was no replacement for the subject he was taking. They increased his salary and emoluments. BUT HE RESIGNED immediately in order to stand with his friends who were dismissed. That was the beginning of his freedom fighting.

He then left the School for an offer with a Newspaper House. He began to use the opportunity he got there to voice out his opinions on Nigeria Independence. He was gaining more fame in his new job. He then went for further studies abroad knowing fully well that he would not be able to fight the Colonial Masters unless he studied well. He became a lawyer. It was his boldness and prowess in journalism that endeared him to Awolowo. They both became freedom fighters and they brought several like-minded people together to form a civil organization for the Yorubas. Later, as a requirement for gaining Independence, political parties must be formed. As at that time, people like Nnamdi Azikiwe and others from the East were also active in fighting for Independence. Only the Northerners were not ready for the Independence. So, Akintola, Awolowo, and other well meaning Yorubas formed a political party. It was Akintola who was saddled with the responsibility of writing the Constitution for the party while Awolowo was made the party leader. 

 

The Real Issue

Let me spare some political stories of the competency of both eminent leaders. Awolowo became the Western Premier but the death of his deputy brought Akintola to that office. Later, Awolowo was aspiring to become the Head of the Central Government. Due to some laxities, he lost but he needed to stay in Lagos, the then seat of power to form opposition government. Akintola had earlier being handed over to as the Western Premier. He was working assiduously for the betterment of the Westerners. PROBLEM BEGAN when he discovered some funds were not remitted to the purse of the Western Government. He went ahead to block them. He discovered some Party members were collecting loans from the Government without repayment. He stopped that as well. HE NEVER KNEW that the said tax on beverages was being paid directly to the account of the wife of his predecessor. When Awolowo came back from Lagos to Ibadan, he summoned Akintola three times in a night and he went the three times. Awolowo was furious that Akintola blocked the payment of the tax on beverages to Mama's account (Awolowo's wife). He was also furious that Akintola blocked the loans being taken by the party loyalists but were never paid. When Akintola complained that they were not paying back the loans, Awolowo said that is the benefit they get as party loyalists. Akintola then said Awolowo as an elder should have told him the details of those things earlier being his former deputy. Awolowo commanded that he should go and restore those benefits. Akintola simply replied that such action would lead to paucity of funds on the side of the Government. AWOLOWO ASKED HIM TO RESIGN with immediate effect. In essence, AWOLOWO WANTED TO BE IN CONTROL OF THE WESTERN GOVERNMENT even though he has ceased being the Premier. The prominent Yoruba Kings held a meeting with them to settle the issue. They asked Akintola to prostrate and begged Awolowo. He did, but Awolowo insisted he must vacate the Premier Seat, and walked out on the prominent Yoruba Kings. That was when Akintola rose to say would Awolowo turn himself to God. The Kings were unhappy with the situation as they left. That was the beginning of the political problem in the Western Region even till now.

 

If I may ask  WHERE IS THE BETRAYAL BEING TALKED ABOUT? WHO IS THE BETRAYER? If you call Akintola a betrayer, then HE BETRAYED CORRUPTION. He fought for the Masses. He would not support public funds to be diverted. IS HE A BETRAYER? 

 

NOTE

I checked my facts with many sources both written documents and oral narrations before I wrote. The sources are mostly from outside Ogbomosho, the Hometown of Akintola. If you know A VERIFIED contrary opinion, please I am open to further learning. I wrote this to clear the air on the wrong impression being carried around. Why do illiterate Yoruba people always revert back to Yoruba language, as if all the audience being addressed understand the language?

I have never met a single educated - even marginally educated - Yoruba who revert to Yoruba language unless their intended audience are Yoruba speaking or are trying to communicate a concept that is not in English, such as ‘orita meta’ or ‘ebora’!.

Would someone tell this ugly obese thieving fool without even a GED to go get some minimal education before he comes here to continue inserting himself where he doesn’t belong and disgracing himself?

Imagine this kind of of an unprincipled nonentity calling anyone ‘drunken’.

Yours isn’t true; Cocoa House originally wasn’t a property  of the Western region even though funds belonging to Western  region was used to build it.  Cocoa House originally was owned by NIPC and Akintola government took over the building (amongst others ) after the Coker Commission of Inquiry. Or you think those indicted by the report didn’t surrender anything to the Regional government? 

Stevek , I respect you as an elder but when you talk about the events that happened in the Western Region, I think I have more facts than many members of this forum . 

There’s a lot of historical distortions and cover up going on . Why ? Why should some overstate the contributions of a man and at the same time destroy the contributions of another ? Is that fair ? 

Am sure you know Sonibare estate owned by late Samuel Olatubosun Shonibare, chairman of NIPC who died in 1964 or so ? The Estate built in the early 1960s is still comparable to some housing estates in the Western world . Where did Sonibare ( who died in his early or mid 40s ) get the money from when overwhelming majority of the people were living in abject poverty .

I won’t lie, I read bits and pieces of the Coker report in the past, not the whole report, but as far as I have read including the parts posted by someone here, I did not read about any indictments.

Was there a court proceedings stemming out of those indictments you mentioned casually?

No Coker Commission mentioned a fight between Awo and Akintola over booty sharing.

The Coker Commission was about Western region’s holdings such as Nabani Estates which became WEMABOD, and all businesses that later morphed into Odua Investments.

No crime was found to have been committed, just some goose chase by the Destroyers of Nigeria led by Sardauna of Sokoto and his lapdog Balewa.

Any thinking mind knows that if there were frauds and money changing hands between Awo and associates, that would have been a legitimate excuse to jail Awo, not the trump up charges of treason.

Preamble

Few days ago, when Professor Yemi Osinbajo made his presidential ambition known publicly, some people began to call him names. The worst of it all was comparing him with Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, a political associate of Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo. They claimed Osinbajo betrayed his political godfather just as Akintola betrayed his boss, Awolowo. I have been hearing this claim since I grew up to understand issues of life. However, as I grew up to study in the area of history, my curiosity pushed me to research into the lives of the two great men involved, Akintola and Awolowo. For the purpose of clarity on the issue of betrayal between the two, I will present to you my findings. 

How They Met

Akintola started his career as a teacher in a Baptist School. He left the School in order not to become a betrayer. How? He was the one who spearheaded a protest against the poor treatment of the Nigerian Tutors who were in the school. The Whites could not swallow such "insolence", so they dismissed the Tutors involved but retained Akintola who himself was at the center of the issue. They did that because he was brilliant and influential among the parents. Moreover, there was no replacement for the subject he was taking. They increased his salary and emoluments. BUT HE RESIGNED immediately in order to stand with his friends who were dismissed. That was the beginning of his freedom fighting.

He then left the School for an offer with a Newspaper House. He began to use the opportunity he got there to voice out his opinions on Nigeria Independence. He was gaining more fame in his new job. He then went for further studies abroad knowing fully well that he would not be able to fight the Colonial Masters unless he studied well. He became a lawyer. It was his boldness and prowess in journalism that endeared him to Awolowo. They both became freedom fighters and they brought several like-minded people together to form a civil organization for the Yorubas. Later, as a requirement for gaining Independence, political parties must be formed. As at that time, people like Nnamdi Azikiwe and others from the East were also active in fighting for Independence. Only the Northerners were not ready for the Independence. So, Akintola, Awolowo, and other well meaning Yorubas formed a political party. It was Akintola who was saddled with the responsibility of writing the Constitution for the party while Awolowo was made the party leader. 

The Real Issue

Let me spare some political stories of the competency of both eminent leaders. Awolowo became the Western Premier but the death of his deputy brought Akintola to that office. Later, Awolowo was aspiring to become the Head of the Central Government. Due to some laxities, he lost but he needed to stay in Lagos, the then seat of power to form opposition government. Akintola had earlier being handed over to as the Western Premier. He was working assiduously for the betterment of the Westerners. PROBLEM BEGAN when he discovered some funds were not remitted to the purse of the Western Government. He went ahead to block them. He discovered some Party members were collecting loans from the Government without repayment. He stopped that as well. HE NEVER KNEW that the said tax on beverages was being paid directly to the account of the wife of his predecessor. When Awolowo came back from Lagos to Ibadan, he summoned Akintola three times in a night and he went the three times. Awolowo was furious that Akintola blocked the payment of the tax on beverages to Mama's account (Awolowo's wife). They asked Akintola to prostrate and begged Awolowo. He did, but Awolowo insisted he must vacate the Premier Seat, and walked out on the prominent Yoruba Kings. That was when Akintola rose to say would Awolowo turn himself to God. The Kings were unhappy with the situation as they left. That was the beginning of the political problem in the Western Region even till now.

If I may ask  WHERE IS THE BETRAYAL BEING TALKED ABOUT? WHO IS THE BETRAYER? If you call Akintola a betrayer, then HE BETRAYED CORRUPTION. He fought for the Masses. He would not support public funds to be diverted. IS HE A BETRAYER? 

NOTE

I checked my facts with many sources both written documents and oral narrations before I wrote. The sources are mostly from outside Ogbomosho, the Hometown of Akintola. If you know A VERIFIED contrary opinion, please I am open to further learning. I wrote this to clear the air on the wrong impression being carried around. He was managing director of a controversial company, National Investment and Properties Corporation, a private company that was linked with AG and the regional government and whose directors were all party members. The company was formed in 1958 by the Action Group to evade a new piece of legislation curtailing the use of banks to finance party activities. Previously, the party was involved in a murky arrangement with National Bank for financing.^[3]Under N.I.P.C.'s relationship with AG, the private firm borrowed money from the Western regional marketing board to invest in the country. The money was used to develop some properties that included Cocoa House, Ibadan and Western House, Broad Street, Lagos.^[4]In 1962, a tribunal under Justice G.B.A. Coker probed a six-million-pound loan that was extended to N.I.P.C. by the Western Region Marketing Board. In fact, a related issue that was more where you are going was the rubber plantation that was located in Awolowo’s home at Ikenne when it should have been located in the Midwest, where Havea braziliensis (the botanical name for natural rubber plant) is a natural place that mimics the Brazil ecology from where it was transported to Nigeria.

There remains serious questions as to Awolowo’s property relationship to the state rubber plantation at some point.

But, till date, all the evidence that exists says that, like the Free Primary Education credited only to Awolowo, Cocoa House was just a concept by Awolowo that was financed by the state legislature.

If you have the NIPC evidence, please, produce it because, as a scientist and empiricist, only evidence sways me, not the relationship to the person providing it.

It was NIPC that built the Cocoa House in 1965 with the proceeds of products such as Cocoa, Rubber and Timber that were the major exports of the Western Region. His government and Action Group (AG) contracted with Cappa and D'Alberto to build Cocoa House. It was formerly named Ile Agbe (Farmers House) by Awolowo and later re-named Cocoa House, because money realized from cocoa was used to build it. It was the first 26 storey building in the whole of West Africa.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was actually the one who betrayed Yemi Osinbajo if truth should be told. Considering that Osinbajo is the one occupying the position of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, convention gives him a priority to fly the flag of his party at the end of their tenure (Buhari/Osinbajo), except in a situation where he is either not interested or is considered a non-performer.

A better question is “How can the Western Region government seize assets of an entity that is being claimed here as part of the Western Region government when it is not possible for government to seize assets from itself?”

The fact that no one here is disputing that the Western Region government seized assets from NIPC and without being challenged then and till date is undisputed evidence that the NIPC was a private entity set up and and run with Western Region funds to allow its owners, led by Awolowo, freedom of spending decisions - bypassing the Western Region Legislature; a fact that resulted in the illegal enrichment of its conflict of interest directors - especially, Shonibare, Maja, and Rewane.

While there is no proof that Awolowo, himself, directly benefited from this heist, there is no evidence that he did not do so indirectly.

Okala’s puppy dog defense of everything Awolowo, even in the face of stark evidence to the contrary, is a very strange phenomenon for an Ikwerre and a man of God.

Awo lived a consistently predictable life.

Above in that excerpt, Awo’s decision not to join in a coalition was the main disagreement between Awo and Akintola.

Before IPOB’s enforcers threats to kill Igbos who join Hausa/Fulani Terrorists, Awolowo already knew the Fulani Terrorists as The Deplorable Elements in Naija politics.

Awo refused to be dragged into a coalition with NPC, headed by Sardauna of Sokoto. Akintola badly wanted the coalition, when it failed to materialize he became a TRAITOR.

I have no reason not to agree with his presentation. Anybody with a “verified contrary opinion” should present it or keep quite.

Preamble

 

Few days ago, when Professor Yemi Osinbajo made his presidential ambition known publicly, some people began to call him names. The worst of it all was comparing him with Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, a political associate of Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo. They claimed Osinbajo betrayed his political godfather just as Akintola betrayed his boss, Awolowo. I have been hearing this claim since I grew up to understand issues of life. However, as I grew up to study in the area of history, my curiosity pushed me to research into the lives of the two great men involved, Akintola and Awolowo. For the purpose of clarity on the issue of betrayal between the two, I will present to you my findings. 

 

How They Met

Akintola started his career as a teacher in a Baptist School. He left the School in order not to become a betrayer. How? He was the one who spearheaded a protest against the poor treatment of the Nigerian Tutors who were in the school. The Whites could not swallow such "insolence", so they dismissed the Tutors involved but retained Akintola who himself was at the center of the issue. They did that because he was brilliant and influential among the parents. Moreover, there was no replacement for the subject he was taking. They increased his salary and emoluments. BUT HE RESIGNED immediately in order to stand with his friends who were dismissed. That was the beginning of his freedom fighting.

He then left the School for an offer with a Newspaper House. He began to use the opportunity he got there to voice out his opinions on Nigeria Independence. He was gaining more fame in his new job. He then went for further studies abroad knowing fully well that he would not be able to fight the Colonial Masters unless he studied well. He became a lawyer. It was his boldness and prowess in journalism that endeared him to Awolowo. They both became freedom fighters and they brought several like-minded people together to form a civil organization for the Yorubas. Later, as a requirement for gaining Independence, political parties must be formed. As at that time, people like Nnamdi Azikiwe and others from the East were also active in fighting for Independence. Only the Northerners were not ready for the Independence. So, Akintola, Awolowo, and other well meaning Yorubas formed a political party. It was Akintola who was saddled with the responsibility of writing the Constitution for the party while Awolowo was made the party leader. 

 

The Real Issue

Let me spare some political stories of the competency of both eminent leaders. Awolowo became the Western Premier but the death of his deputy brought Akintola to that office. Later, Awolowo was aspiring to become the Head of the Central Government. Due to some laxities, he lost but he needed to stay in Lagos, the then seat of power to form opposition government. Akintola had earlier being handed over to as the Western Premier. He was working assiduously for the betterment of the Westerners. PROBLEM BEGAN when he discovered some funds were not remitted to the purse of the Western Government. He went ahead to block them. He discovered some Party members were collecting loans from the Government without repayment. He stopped that as well. HE NEVER KNEW that the said tax on beverages was being paid directly to the account of the wife of his predecessor. When Awolowo came back from Lagos to Ibadan, he summoned Akintola three times in a night and he went the three times. Awolowo was furious that Akintola blocked the payment of the tax on beverages to Mama's account (Awolowo's wife). He was also furious that Akintola blocked the loans being taken by the party loyalists but were never paid. When Akintola complained that they were not paying back the loans, Awolowo said that is the benefit they get as party loyalists. Akintola then said Awolowo as an elder should have told him the details of those things earlier being his former deputy. Awolowo commanded that he should go and restore those benefits. Akintola simply replied that such action would lead to paucity of funds on the side of the Government. AWOLOWO ASKED HIM TO RESIGN with immediate effect. In essence, AWOLOWO WANTED TO BE IN CONTROL OF THE WESTERN GOVERNMENT even though he has ceased being the Premier. The prominent Yoruba Kings held a meeting with them to settle the issue. They asked Akintola to prostrate and begged Awolowo. He did, but Awolowo insisted he must vacate the Premier Seat, and walked out on the prominent Yoruba Kings. That was when Akintola rose to say would Awolowo turn himself to God. The Kings were unhappy with the situation as they left. That was the beginning of the political problem in the Western Region even till now.

 

If I may ask  WHERE IS THE BETRAYAL BEING TALKED ABOUT? WHO IS THE BETRAYER? If you call Akintola a betrayer, then HE BETRAYED CORRUPTION. He fought for the Masses. He would not support public funds to be diverted. IS HE A BETRAYER? 

 

NOTE

I checked my facts with many sources both written documents and oral narrations before I wrote. The sources are mostly from outside Ogbomosho, the Hometown of Akintola. No Coker Commission mentioned a fight between Awo and Akintola over booty sharing.

The Coker Commission was about Western region’s holdings such as Nabani Estates which became WEMABOD, and all businesses that later morphed into Odua Investments.

No crime was found to have been committed, just some goose chase by the Destroyers of Nigeria led by Sardauna of Sokoto and his lapdog Balewa.

Any thinking mind knows that if there were frauds and money changing hands between Awo and associates, that would have been a legitimate excuse to jail Awo, not the trump up charges of treason.

And our instruments or tools are also, necessarily, limited to the physical innate potential of our senses - since we have no receptors for inputs from instruments intended for senses we don't have; the rest of the qualities of the universe different from what our senses are designed for remaining UNKNOWING and UNKNOWABLE to us.

And all this is only for the physical universe which is only like the tip of the iceberg of the Cosmos or Reality; the rest being the more extensive base or Metaphysical Universe of which the physical universe is its iceberg of visible and tactile manifestation.

But even in the workings of our own bodies, most of what keeps us alive is the Autonomous System in the Limbic Brain (Medulla) that uses more intelligence and coordination than our mighty Cerebral Cortex that is responsible for our Awareness.

Therefore, we are more than only what we are aware of. And, clearly, there is more to Reality the Cosmos than just the physical and tactile universe.

And we have glimmers of this flashing occasionally through our iceberg of Awareness when we KNOW things in processes we poorly understand, such as serendipity, intuition, premonition, and precognition.

This is a higher form of interconnection with the metaphysical world that is higher than a mere flashlight intended to be used in the darkness of the ephemeral physical universe (logic); it is a continuation of where logic ends and true Sentiency begins.

But for the italicized and underlined sentence in the excerpt above, one would have shouted alleluia to Steven Kueberuwa's saying something devoid of drunkenness in a long time. Kueberuwa showcased the bad human being that he is by admitting that no evidence linked Awo directly to corruption/heisting of public funds, yet he implied that such lacking in evidence does not mean that Awo did not indirectly enrich himself corruptly. This type of evil mentality is usually at the height of my disputes with Steven Kueberuwa on these forums -- he deploys dishonesty and poor/corrupt scholarship standard of reasoning to getting to his devious aims.

What properly educated and honest person would translate the absence of direct evidence of corrupt enrichment to mean possible evidence of indirect corrupt enrichment? In other words, Steven Kueberuwa is dishonestly and corruptly asking Awo followers to prove a zero, something that no properly educated person engages in? Does it make any sense to Steven Kueberuwa that a Commission that found "no proof that Awolowo directly benefited from this heist" would have not found evidence of indirect corrupt enrichment against him if such a possibility existed?  

Everything else that Steven Kueberuwa stated in the excerpt is sound but he rarely utters sound ideas without impeaching the same ideas before finishing making them. But for that lone sentence, he would have set a record today.

Preamble

 

Few days ago, when Professor Yemi Osinbajo made his presidential ambition known publicly, some people began to call him names. The worst of it all was comparing him with Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, a political associate of Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo. They claimed Osinbajo betrayed his political godfather just as Akintola betrayed his boss, Awolowo. I have been hearing this claim since I grew up to understand issues of life. However, as I grew up to study in the area of history, my curiosity pushed me to research into the lives of the two great men involved, Akintola and Awolowo. For the purpose of clarity on the issue of betrayal between the two, I will present to you my findings. 

 

How They Met

Akintola started his career as a teacher in a Baptist School. He left the School in order not to become a betrayer. How? He was the one who spearheaded a protest against the poor treatment of the Nigerian Tutors who were in the school. The Whites could not swallow such "insolence", so they dismissed the Tutors involved but retained Akintola who himself was at the center of the issue. They did that because he was brilliant and influential among the parents. Moreover, there was no replacement for the subject he was taking. They increased his salary and emoluments. BUT HE RESIGNED immediately in order to stand with his friends who were dismissed. That was the beginning of his freedom fighting.

He then left the School for an offer with a Newspaper House. He began to use the opportunity he got there to voice out his opinions on Nigeria Independence. He was gaining more fame in his new job. He then went for further studies abroad knowing fully well that he would not be able to fight the Colonial Masters unless he studied well. He became a lawyer. It was his boldness and prowess in journalism that endeared him to Awolowo. They both became freedom fighters and they brought several like-minded people together to form a civil organization for the Yorubas. Later, as a requirement for gaining Independence, political parties must be formed. As at that time, people like Nnamdi Azikiwe and others from the East were also active in fighting for Independence. Only the Northerners were not ready for the Independence. So, Akintola, Awolowo, and other well meaning Yorubas formed a political party. It was Akintola who was saddled with the responsibility of writing the Constitution for the party while Awolowo was made the party leader. 

 

The Real Issue

Let me spare some political stories of the competency of both eminent leaders. Awolowo became the Western Premier but the death of his deputy brought Akintola to that office. Later, Awolowo was aspiring to become the Head of the Central Government. Due to some laxities, he lost but he needed to stay in Lagos, the then seat of power to form opposition government. Akintola had earlier being handed over to as the Western Premier. He was working assiduously for the betterment of the Westerners. PROBLEM BEGAN when he discovered some funds were not remitted to the purse of the Western Government. He went ahead to block them. He discovered some Party members were collecting loans from the Government without repayment. He stopped that as well. HE NEVER KNEW that the said tax on beverages was being paid directly to the account of the wife of his predecessor. When Awolowo came back from Lagos to Ibadan, he summoned Akintola three times in a night and he went the three times. Awolowo was furious that Akintola blocked the payment of the tax on beverages to Mama's account (Awolowo's wife). He was also furious that Akintola blocked the loans being taken by the party loyalists but were never paid. When Akintola complained that they were not paying back the loans, Awolowo said that is the benefit they get as party loyalists. Akintola then said Awolowo as an elder should have told him the details of those things earlier being his former deputy. Awolowo commanded that he should go and restore those benefits. Akintola simply replied that such action would lead to paucity of funds on the side of the Government. AWOLOWO ASKED HIM TO RESIGN with immediate effect. In essence, AWOLOWO WANTED TO BE IN CONTROL OF THE WESTERN GOVERNMENT even though he has ceased being the Premier. The prominent Yoruba Kings held a meeting with them to settle the issue. They asked Akintola to prostrate and begged Awolowo. He did, but Awolowo insisted he must vacate the Premier Seat, and walked out on the prominent Yoruba Kings. That was when Akintola rose to say would Awolowo turn himself to God. The Kings were unhappy with the situation as they left. That was the beginning of the political problem in the Western Region even till now.

 

If I may ask  WHERE IS THE BETRAYAL BEING TALKED ABOUT? WHO IS THE BETRAYER? If you call Akintola a betrayer, then HE BETRAYED CORRUPTION. He fought for the Masses. He would not support public funds to be diverted. IS HE A BETRAYER? 

 

NOTE

I checked my facts with many sources both written documents and oral narrations before I wrote. The sources are mostly from outside Ogbomosho, the Hometown of Akintola. If you know A VERIFIED contrary opinion, please I am open to further learning. I wrote this to clear the air on the wrong impression being carried around. Wow! We live to see/learn, which is the meaning of my father's name -- Adiele. Until now, I was taught and I believed that Awo built the Cocoa House for Western Region, which Awo worshippers never cease shoving down anyone's throat upon the slightest argument. So that wasn't the case until Akintola's confiscation made it a property of Western Region's? 

What else are we going to learn/see about Awo as we live on?

The money was used to develop some properties that included Cocoa House, Ibadan and Western House, Broad Street, Lagos.^[4]In 1962, a tribunal under Justice G.B.A. Coker probed a six-million-pound loan that was extended to N.I.P.C. by the Western Region Marketing Board. When a state of emergency became effective in the region, Shonibare was limited to Ondo town; he died in January 1964, weeks after the state of emergency was lifted. Shonibare was chairman of Amalgamated Press Ltd, Ikeja. Prior to his death, he founded Shonny Investments which was in the process of developing Maryland Estate. He was also involved in a mobile film unit and a printing business.
