….. Ends Manual Case Submissions

The Federal High Court of Nigeria (FHCN) has officially commenced its electronic filing (e-filing) system in the Lagos Judicial Division, marking a major step toward the digital transformation of Nigeria’s judiciary.

The rollout, which takes effect from Monday, April 27, 2026, makes it mandatory for all new cases to be filed exclusively through the electronic platform. The court had earlier set April 24, 2026, as the final deadline for manual filing of cases, effectively bringing an end to the traditional paper-based process in the Lagos division.

The introduction of the e-filing system is part of broader judicial reforms aimed at modernizing court operations, reducing administrative bottlenecks, and enhancing access to justice. Legal practitioners and litigants are now required to submit court processes online, enabling faster documentation, improved record-keeping, and greater transparency in case management.

Officials of the court noted that the initiative is expected to significantly cut down delays associated with manual filing, including long queues, paperwork errors, and logistical challenges. The new system will also allow lawyers to file processes remotely, track case progress in real time, and receive electronic notifications on court activities.

The Lagos Judicial Division, being one of the busiest arms of the Federal High Court, was selected as the pilot location for the e-filing initiative, with plans underway to extend the system to other divisions across the country in due course.

Stakeholders in the legal sector have welcomed the development, describing it as a timely reform that aligns Nigeria’s judicial processes with global best practices and digital standards. They, however, emphasized the need for adequate training, stable internet infrastructure, and technical support to ensure seamless implementation.

The e-filing system is expected to usher in a new era of efficiency, accountability, and innovation within Nigeria’s justice delivery system.
