Dear Friends,
This is to bring to your attention that a pet dog bite incident that happened yesterday evening around 6.15 pm in the car parking area.
My son Neil was walking our daschund, pepper, in the parking area, and he suddenly noticed a black lab charging towards pepper, in an effort to save pepper, Neil picked up pepper and tried to move him away from the black lab and the lab bit Neil on his lower back. Neil lost balance in the bargain and fell on the ground and severely hurt his elbow. The bite wound is deep. These dogs were walked by Kishore, who is a dog walker. He is very thin and barely can manage walking himself. He had one white lab on the leash and the black lab who attacked Pepper and Neil was without a leash. In the melee, the white labrador almost slipped out of the collar, and if that had to happen, it could have been disastrous for my son Neil and my pet Pepper. The dog walker could barely manage to keep the white labrador in the collar. The situation was saved by the workers and security guards, they made a noise and scared away the black lab.
We managed to trace the dog walker with the help of the security guard and found out dogs belonged to Shruti.
When we informed her, she was very apologetic and assured me that the pets have taken the anti rabies vaccine shot and further, she assured me that she would take strict action against the dog walker.
Neil reached home in a very bad state with his T shirt torn, covered in dust, swollen elbow, and bleeding from the dog bite wound. We rushed him to the doctor and have begun the 5 shots anti Rabies, (Rabipur Vaccine) schedule followed with a tetanus. He had his class exams today but had to miss it as advised by the doctor.
Friends, those of us are actively trying to bridge the gap between dog haters and us, dog/pet lovers, are really fighting a losing battle. If we who are active are not going to follow the rules what hope do we have to integrate our pets into the society where there is a very active group who very clearly want this complex to be dog free that includes our pets. We are fighting tooth and nail to be able to use the common amenities like podium gardens, lobbies, parking areas and lifts. Now it is my son and I am a dog lover so I am not making it a big issue. One can easily imagine what would be the situation if these pets made an attack in the presence of toddlers. It could have been disastrous. Imagine this situation inside a lift with toddlers travelling as well. I want to emphasise here, that every pet outside the house should be on a leash, if we are unable to walk with our pets ourselves, at least have dog walkers who are fit enough to do this job in the first place and have at least some liking towards pets. Many of our members, have pointed out that these dogs walkers just stand in one place, smoking, chatting over the phone, and don't bother to give some exercise to pets by means of walk.
I want to go one step further in our pet rules by stressing that pet owners who are aware that their pets can be aggressive should muzzle their dogs when they are in public. I think, this is the right time for us to open our eyes to some facts. There is a demand from the non pet lovers, that a fine should be levied each time a pet is found without a leash. We should seriously think on this line because many of us are taking our rights for granted before it is too too late, we must act and correct the situation.
I would suggest that we from Nahar Pets Club send a letter to all the Societies, i.e., YYV, Eight Towers, Lilium Lantana, Twin Towers, to levy a monetary fine of Rs.500/- per incident of pooping and not picking up, pet not on leash, aggressive pets not muzzled. I can imagine many of you thinking that I am saying all this because my son who was affected. But I am taking this incident as a sign that something very much worse could happen due to which we will lose all our rights we are enjoying now and we will be left to the mercy of the non pet lovers and the very active pet/dog haters.
Hoping for a positive response from all of you.
With warm regards,
Lavita Powell
