I followed up with MC this morning after the meeting to investigate if we need further approval than what he has provided on the furniture and why we are not able to obtain the signed document.
Per Rafael, he became "uncomfortable" with signing the document because it was a "formal document" and he was contacted by "Jeff an attorney"  He expressed concern that our project is becoming much more formal than what was presented to him at the beginning.  Again he also said he "agreed to paint, shelves, birdbath, and books."

Thank you for the update Karen.

At this point , based on the discussions we had this morning, I believe there are two “yes or no” questions remaining:

1.       Will or wont Rafael sign the letter that we had provided to him outlining the project?

a.       If no, will he provide an email to the group, stating what he told you below?

2.       If he will not sign the letter, which we had previously voted on,  is the group comfortable in moving forward ?

Based on the discussions we had this morning, it is imperative that question number one be posed to Rafael as soon as possible.

My personal opinion is that we move forward with our project.  We have our Board Approval and we have promised to do a project.  We have had fundraisers in order to do our project that people have donated towards.  We have all our plans in order and people have worked very hard to get to this point.  I understand the concern, but if we have local approval and there is no legal ramifications that can come back to us, let’s do what we have set out to do?  So, if we are voting …this is my vote.

I agree with Debi, it may not be the proper approval that we were hoping to get but it is what it is and we have to move forward to be able to complete our project in time.

I can hear people saying this was not what I have voted at the first place, may be we should have asked more questions about it. It might be the same way for MC, may be it was not what they were initially thinking either, but we have came along way since we have started and worked hard for it. We have achieved great deal of success till now and I do not think we should stop what we have started. We should order the furniture upon their e-mail approval, and built them asap and deliver the results, so we can move on to the next project if we chose to.

Have a great rest of your day!

Best,
Aysim

Karen & All other LA Members,

I understand Rafael's concerns but only up to a point. The letter was not a "legal" document or signed by an attorney. Jeff and you have spoken to him only on behalf of the NABOR Leadership Academy.

The letter, if my understanding is correct, was only for clarification both for MC and yourselves. That is how it should be explained.

I do feel strongly that as a group you should complete the project you all agreed upon and put individual feelings aside. Whether this is a "for profit" or not makes no difference. You are all(as a team) still helping members of our community which is what this was about.

Just my thoughts......

Good Afternoon LA,
I just caught up with everyone's input on our project and very glad to hear those saying Lets get it done!  Pretty sure, I am not alone to say we are not quitters.  If there are unexpected issues it is up to us as a group to find solutions and it may not be exactly what we want or expected, but flexibility, and determination is what will lead us to the positive outcome we set out to accomplish.
I have completed hundreds of volunteer hours each year for the past 10 years and never asked for a formal document to be signed by the person or organization I am volunteering for.  Have you experienced requesting documents signed before you participate in a community project or volunteering in any way?
Aysim, we know how much the furniture is and where we are getting it, have you requested for the check from NABOR?  It will be nice if we can receive in time for the scheduled work to be done so we do not have to take Justin up on his gracious offer to put it on his credit card.
When I spoke with Rafael this morning I offered to assist with getting the room cleared and he expressed being grateful but it was not necessary.
Looking forward to working with the group this wk end for those that will be able to make it and to graduation.
Have a wonderful afternoon!

A majority have mentioned a preference to move on with the MC project.
My question to those is what does that mean? Does that mean that you
desire to move forward without any further clarification or approval
from MC? Do you desire to move forward only upon written approval?
Approval in an email? How long are you willing to wait for that
approval?

There is obviously no right or wrong answers to these questions.
However, the questions must be addressed. I agree with Marti that
whether MC is for profit or not misses the point. The point is whether
we have the blessing, support, and approval of MC.

While Jeff laid out the issues extremely well... it does not seem that
anyone addressed them in their response.. except for maybe Aysim's who
suggested that an email approval would be sufficient.

Karen, I do not doubt in any way that your contacts at MC has express
their full support with this. However, do these contacts have the
authority to approve this? If so, what exactly are they approving? The
entire purpose of sending the letter was to confirm that the project
was approved and determine the scope of the project.

While the letter sought clarity, in my opinion, the result has been
anything but... and the suggestion that the demand for written
clarification is too much to ask or even an attempt to sabotage the
project is absurd.

As to Jeff's questions... I am not comfortable with anything but
written approval. On the one hand, we committed to this and will do a
fantastic job if approved. On the other hand, we cannot force them to
approve this...as hard as we may try. We are running out of time and
at some point need to get approval (what ever the group determines
that to be) or focus our energies elsewhere.

See everyone Thursday.
