Hi Marti, and I absolutely agree that we need some finishing touches.  Here is the list:

1 floor lamp
Blinds to cover 3 windows
2 sets of bookends
ceiling fan
Some new books  ( large Print)
Table cloths (3)
1 high back chair with arms.  Something comfy.

Bird Bath??? It wasn't there on Sunday.

I am willing to do the shopping for the above items and see it through to delivery.  We do not have to install the fan or blinds we will only present it to them for MC to install.   I can wrap it and present it at the Project Celebration. This does not have to be completed over night but would like to get it done prior to graduation so we can all see what our final project looks like.  John F. will you take a few pics to share to LA once the additional items are in place?

This will not break the bank to add these few items.  Any objections, please reply to all as to what they are.  If not then apply to all you agree.  Please respond today.

Thank you LA!

That's fantastic!  Plenty to put finishing touched on the MC library and also donate $ to one or both of the other charities.

You guys rock with your fundraising!

Hello Everyone,

I stopped off Friday evening to watch a good portion of your group putting together the shelving for MC.  You all did a great job!!

I also went by MC on Sunday where John F. and Karen worked hard dusting, organizing and placing the books & games on the shelves.  It was inspiring to see all of you pulling together to get your project complete this weekend.

Karen, John, and I agree that the library could definitely use some minor finishing touches such as new blinds, a more updated ceiling fan and odds & ends for on top of the shelving units,  even pictures on the walls, etc.  It might be worth while for a few of you to drive over and and see what you can do to make the room look more finished.

Are you still putting in a birdhouse/feeder outside the window of the library?

I'm sure Karen and/or Jeff will be talking to MC about an official "ribbon cutting" ceremony and will let us all know when that is to take place.  It would be nice to invite our Board members and anyone else you feel might like to come to that event.  Please try and give us enough advance notice so we can all make it.

Diana and I are very proud of all you have accomplished and are looking forward to your graduation ceremony November 15th.  Make sure you R.S.V.P. to Michelle!!

Have a wonderful day!!  It's so nice to have our weather a bit cooler at last!  Get out and enjoy it if you can.

Good Afternoon,
With moving this wk. end, I had to drop off the items I collected in order for me to have room in my van for the things I do not want to go on the truck.  I put the boxes and bags of collected items on the counter and on the floor where the fridge used to be.  If this gets in the way of the furniture delivery on Sat. please ask one of the staff members if you can use a cart until Sunday.  I think they will be out of your way though.

I met with MC employees for wrap up and review of this wk. end plan.  There are tables and chairs scattered about the room that are supposed to be completely moved out for Saturday's delivery.  As well as the valances cleaned and rehung.  Whom ever is driving the truck to MC, Ken is the Maintenance Director and he said there is an orange cone to use for along side the building off of Lakewood Blvd. for you to have easy access through the dining room.

Looking forward to seeing the Library on Sunday and adding the final touches with our collections.
Have fun tonight with the assembly line and pizza!

Good Morning,

My concern with the proposal below is that at our leadership meeting in Sept. the scope of the project was specifically delineated, and specifically voted on by the group and approved after much discussion. The scope that was approved by the group  did not include the items referenced below.  Additionally, we do not have word that MC would approve the new blinds, chair, fan, etc.  We also do not have proposed pieces, to present to them or to vote on amongst ourselves, or a proposed outline of the cost of these items for the group to approve.

We have all worked very hard to fundraise for and execute the project in accordance with what we, as a group, have agreed upon.  The past few weeks have been amazing as everyone, in light of obstacles involved,  has pulled together to help bring the project to a successful conclusion.

In light of the foregoing, I would not be in favor of the proposal outlined below.

I'm not necessarily suggesting more furniture, but you do want the room to look "finished".  Remember this is reflection of the Leadership Academy and Nabor.  At the ceremony you want the room to reflect positively on you. That'd why I suggested having 3-4 of you go back and look at the room now that the shelving is in place.

I'm not sure what you are referring to as it was clean the times I've been there but perhaps you've been there more often or seen something I missed?
Again, let me just state that you want this project to reflect well on you when our Board members and the public look at the room as a whole.

This is your project and if you all feel it is complete then so be it.  I know the residents' families are happy with any improvements that are made for their loved ones.

I found all the items on the list at Kmart and took pics if anyone wants to see.  Prices found for the items:
1 floor lamp    $12.99
Blinds to cover 3 windows 16.99-29.99 (depending on width using $29.99x3=$89.97574
2 sets of bookends $5.00x2=$10.00
ceiling fan (52 inch 5 blades with light kit) $79.99
Some new books  ( large Print) $100.00
Table cloths (3) @$11.00= $33.00
1 high back chair with arms.  Something comfy. $249.00

Total  $574.95x.07(tax)$40.25= $615.20

This will leave us $3782.03 to divide to JVD and Alz charities.  What a fantastic way for our class to go into the memory books.  The Class of 2012 that completed a project and still had several thousand dollars to donate to 2 other charities!!

Hi All,

Although I do get the points of those opposed, if it's $615.20 to make the library look complete and finished, I'm in. All our names are written all over this project, the last thing I want is for it to look just ok. The remaining $3782.03 can be used for our other charity of choice, which we can do a check presentation with. All great press and best of all it feels good to give. Just my two cents....

I agree with Jeff and Paula.  This should have been proposed in the beginning.

Manor Care is not a nonprofit organization, as we all found out later.  I was under the belief when I entered Leadership that we were doing this for a charity not a corporate owned company.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Unfortunately unless you look at what you have already completed you may miss something that also needs being done.

No where in your paperwork did it state that your project had to be a "not for profit".  When the Manor care project was voted on and taken to the Board of Directors it was made clear that it was a "for profit".  There is nothing wrong with that.  Prior Leadership Projects were for profit organizations.  You are still doing something worthwhile for our community!

The idea behind the project is learning to work as a team to accomplish something that helps our community and/or NABOR.  The residents and clients of Manor Care most definitely needed your help and support.  I only hope that if any one of us has to be in a nursing care facility at some point in our lives that there are people who step up if the facility/residents need help.

All I suggested was that a small group of you go back, look around the room and make sure you've done everything you can to ensure your project has been completed to the best of your ability.  It certainly cannot be about the funds as your fundraising endeavors were more than successful.

Even with a few small additions, you will still have plenty of money left to help another charity of your choice.

Jeff, you need to call this issue for a vote quickly.  There has certainly been more than enough dialogue and it's time to move forward.  Thank you.

LA, very well said Marti and exactly what I was thinking while reading these negative responses.  This project is not about corporations, it's about doing worth while work together that is meaningful for a group of deserving people in our community.  Most of these people have no choice but to live out the remainder of their lives in a facility or go through a rehab program so they may return to their lives with quality and safety.
Thanks to us, during their stay there, they will have a much nicer room to gather, learn, discuss, lose themselves in a good book, and socialize with their peers and visitors.
I honestly do not understand how anyone can not agree to purchasing these few items to add some finishing touches to our worthwhile project that we have more than enough funds to accomplish.  The money was raised for this project, Manor Care Library and yes later decided that excess funds will be used to go to charity.  Excess funds, after the original project is completed.  It is my opinion it is not completed.
Let's just do it!

My $.02.

If it is as simple as going out and buying the items listed and
bringing them to MC, then yes, by all means lets go ahead and make
this happen. The problem I see is getting the approval.

Karen, I thought that MC already advised you that we were not able to
change the blinds. Is that accurate? Also, with regards to a floor
lamp, I highly doubt they will allow anything with cords to be in any
of the common rooms. As to the ceiling fan; Raphael could not get
authority to open a door for us on Saturday, I doubt he will give us
the authority to shut off the power in order to install a new ceiling
fan.

My suggestion is that Karen submit all of the items to Raphael for
approval... in the context of "We are thinking about adding the
following items, if this is agreed upon by the LA, which items are
approved"... or something similar. Until we get that response, there
is no sense voting or making any decisions.

Further, I suggest that we get everything decided on soon.. like
Monday of next week which would require MC to respond by Friday.

Hope everyone is having a good week.

Hi Justin,
Rafael did not want to have the valances replaced because in my opinion it was easier because he knew we would want "approval and signatures"  Just the feeling I got.
Per my previous email the fan and blinds will be presented as a present to them and they will install.  The lamp will fit perfectly in the corner between the furniture and wall so cords will not be exposed.  Cords were never an issue as far as I know.
I hardly believe Rafael will need to provide us with approval for table cloths and bookends.  BTW, the bookends have a frame in each so we can provide them with a couple of group pics.  I will attach a couple of the items I priced today.
Thank you for your .02  :)

I agree with Justin, before we go ahead and purchase those items we need to make sure they are acceptable and upto their safety codes.. I think Karen should show the list to Rafael to make sure it is fine by e-mail or signature etc. If so then I would use my vote to go ahead with it and complete the look.

Also, some of you may not know this but yesterday we received another $250 from Kim’s mortgage broker from her office.  She was a Sponsor for the Shula’s event.  Thank you, Kim!

I agree with Justin also. I would also like to add to Justin's email. I feel that there should be a "finishing touches" sub-committee who can handle this. Karen can chair this sub-committee and since John F. and Heather are available for Thursday they can help Karen with the finishing touches....

I agree with Lauren. If the group feels that more finishing touches should be added to complete the project, which it appears they do, then lets quickly create a subcommittee to meet at MC and asses the situation and bring it back to the group.

However, based on prior difficulties getting them to approve anything, and potential difficulties with any additional alterations to the room, I would not actually go ahead and purchase the fan, blinds, etc. without an approval from MC.

I will not be available to go to MC on Thursday morning.

Agreed. Because many of us can't attend tomorrow pictures of the room would be great. Pictures and approval for additional items should be attached. It would also be beneficial to know in your discussions with MC when is the ribbon cutting ceremony so that everyone can attend. Thanks

I will not be available either Jeff. In addition, because of code and this being an operating business and previous discussions relating to electric; I believe we would need an electrician involved to cover ourselves. Obviously, we are not going to purchase a fan and just leave it there at MC for them to handle. I know you will advise us as to who the sub-committee will be.

Thanks for all your efforts,

Paula A. Schatz
