Greetings everyone - this is a program offered by NAACL that I hope
you will consider taking advantage of (assuming that you are based in
the Americas). Last year this was known as the Latin America Fund, and
although it has been renamed for 2010, the objectives of the Fund are
very much as they were...

==================================================
CALL FOR PROPOSALS (2010 - 2011)
NAACL Emerging Regions Fund

Deadlines :

September 1, 2010 for events to take place November 2010 through July
2011
March 1, 2011 for events to take place May 2011 through January 2012
===========================================================

At their June 2010 meeting, the NAACL Executive Board decided to
merge
two small funds programs created in 2009 (the Latin American Fund and
the Regional Conferences Fund) to form the Emerging Regions Fund.
This
newly created fund is intended to assist the creation of a larger and
more cohesive Computational Linguistics community in Latin America,
and to enhance more regional interactions among students and
researchers anywhere in the Americas.

NAACL has set aside a total of $5,000 in funding for the coming year,
and invites proposals in the range of $500 - $1,500 (US). There will
be two deadlines for proposals in the coming year, and approximately
half of the funds will be awarded after each deadline. NAACL
recognizes that each region has specific needs and concerns, and so
we
are open to a wide range of possible proposals, subject to the
constraint that these awards are intended to support individuals,
institutions, or events located in the Americas, and to support
travel
within the Americas. NAACL will not support travel to or from
locations outside of the Americas, and in general travel should be
limited to a specific region in the Americas.

Examples of proposals that might help to "build community" could
include financial support for regional conferences or workshops, or
providing financial or material support for Natural Language
Processing and Computational Linguistics classes at colleges and
universities in Latin America. In addition, NAACL has a long
tradition
of supporting student participation in conferences, summer schools,
and NLP/CL competitions, and would give high priority to such efforts
in Latin America or at regional events in the Americas. Note that
this
fund is not intended to support student travel to the NAACL HLT
conference as there is a separate fund available for the purpose.
The two deadlines for proposals are: September 1, 2010 and March 1,
2011. The event for which funding is requested should take place
within 2 to 9 months of the deadline to which you submit. Proposals
will be evaluated by a committee consisting of members of the NAACL
Executive Board.

Please submit a one page proposal (approx), that addresses the
following points :

=========================
1) What will this funding enable you to achieve? :
2) Who specifically will benefit from this funding? :
3) The total amount of NAACL funding requested (in US dollars) :
4) A more detailed breakdown of the budget (if relevant) :
5) If you will use this funding to make your own awards (e.g.,
student
travel grants), by what criteria will you do that, and who would make
that decision? :
6) Contact information for the individual or organization making the
request, along with any relevant web pages:
=========================

Please submit proposals or questions to Rebecca Hwa, Chair of NAACL
(rebecca.hwa at gmail.com) and cc Ted Pedersen ( tpederse at
