New issue 1579 by glbe...@gmail.com: No longer finds GPS signal
https://code.google.com/p/mytracks/issues/detail?id=1579

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Every morning I step outside and press record.
2. After as long as 40 minutes, still no signal.
3. Worked perfectly until Wed. prior to Thanksgiving.

I have not made any known changes on my Nexus phone.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Typically it takes 16 - 30 seconds to locate and begin tracking.

What version of MyTracks are you using? On what version of Android? On what
phone?

My Track version v2.0.8
Android version 5.0

Comment #1 on issue 1579 by robertwa...@gmail.com: No longer finds GPS

https://code.google.com/p/mytracks/issues/detail?id=1579

Confirmed I get the same issue as recorded here, same configuration too:
My Track version v2.0.8
Android version 5.0
Kernel version: 3.4.0-perf-g60eefcd
androi...@vpbs1.mtv.corp.google.com #1

Device: Nexus 4

Interestingly I seem to have found a temporary workaround as per below:

1. Launch 'GPS Status' app (can be downloaded from the Play Store and is a
really useful tool I've found in the past) and let it fix the GPS position
2. Launch 'My Tracks' and start recording
3. In 'My Tracks' click the icon to fix GPS position (My Tracks should zoom
in on your current location)
4. Switch back to the 'GPS Status' app and then lock my screen

Using the above process I managed to get My Tracks to record a workout for
the first time since the Android 5.0 update.

https://code.google.com/p/mytracks/issues/detail?id=1579

Ditto to the above. Nexus 4 on Android 5.0.
Worked perfectly until recently. All other GPS related apps lock onto GPS
with no issues, including Google Maps, and Endomondo which I have now
started using since My Tracks stopped working.
I am wondering if it could be a Google Play Services roll out causing the
issue, as I recently got an app update due to Google Play Service 6.5...

https://code.google.com/p/mytracks/issues/detail?id=1579

Forgot to say - it was an Endomondo app update - the change log explained
that GPS may stop working without this update due to Google play services
6.5... So this could be related possibly to My Tracks stopping working...

So the culprit is the Google Play Services update to 6.5.87? How often is
this service updated?

Public service announcement: do NOT install the Google Play Services 6.5.88
you might find on the web - it's for KitKat only.

https://code.google.com/p/mytracks/issues/detail?id=1579

I tried the 'work around' in comment #1 and it works in a heartbeat!
Actually quicker to get GPS signal than it ever did before. The app I
loaded was:

GPS Status Test & Fix - No Ads by Mark Pfluger.

Once I did that and started that app, then started My Track it found GPS
very quickly.

Google needs to rationalize code and fix this, but this is a viable work
around in the interim - IMHO.

I've been having the same issues with my tracks on my Nexus 4 after android
5 OS Lollipop update. All i get is waiting for gps signal when trying to
use my tracks app.

The workaround of using GPS status as an interim fix works.

It appears the use of the work around I tried - using GPS Status Test & Fix
- No Ads by Mark Pfluger - then initiating My Tracks is NOT a solid work
around. Using it this morning on a multi-mile walk, My Tracks only
recorded 14.95 feet. I'm bummed.

Comment #11 on issue 1579 by robertwa...@gmail.com: No longer finds GPS

https://code.google.com/p/mytracks/issues/detail?id=1579

The key point for the workaround I have found is that you need to keep
the 'GPS Status' app open and in the 'foreground' at all times. If you
switch your Nexus 4 to any other app or switch to the home screen and then
lock the phone, My Tracks loses the GPS position. From what I have
observed, as soon as the 'GPS Status' is not the 'foreground' app, the
Location Service icon disappears from my Notification area on top right of
screen. At that point, My Tracks loses the GPS fix I think. I've now
completed 4 workouts this week using the workaround with a 100% success
rate so far.

I've seen it mentioned that running another tracking app such as Strava
will keep My Tracks working even if either app is pushed to the background.
I confirm that this does work, although I'm not sure if it was because of
Strava...I've had 2 other tracking apps running simultaneously: My Tracks
(by Daniel Qin) and Map My Ride.

I'll try to narrow it down tonight: whether one or all will keep My Tracks
working.

Have finally had two successful outings in which My Tracks has recorded the
complete trip and activity. The irony is, I had to install Strava in order
for it to work. So now the question - why do I need 'My Tracks'? I have
to run essentially a competing application to make it work?

Comment #16 on issue 1579 by lrnz.m...@gmail.com: No longer finds GPS signal
https://code.google.com/p/mytracks/issues/detail?id=1579

Same problem here. I do not get an GPS signal in MyTracks anymore and it
seems to coincide with the update from Android 4.4.4 to Android 5.

MyTracks 2.0.8
Nexus 4
Android 5.0

Another thing which I realised is that MyTracks also seems to confuse the
GPS signal for other apps. When I start Google Maps on its own, there is
not problem with the GPS signal. But when I start MyTracks in addition to
Google Maps, then Maps gets confused and also looses the signal. When I
kill the MyTracks app Google Maps is fine again.

Google Play Services 6.5.87

Had the same problem with Android 4.4.4 then went to 5.0 and yesterday I
tried 5.0.1, I did not note the Google Play Services version when it
stopped working.

I use G-Mon ( a WAR driving software ) to keep the GPS open, Im pretty sure
this has something to do with how My Tracks gets its GPS signal (through
Play Services) keeping an app open which constantly uses a real GPS signal
seems to supply Play Service with a valid result.

Comment #30 on issue 1579 by spamlike...@gmail.com: No longer finds GPS
signal
https://code.google.com/p/mytracks/issues/detail?id=1579

I have noticed identical behavior.

The Nexus 6, or perhaps Android 5.0.x, strongly prefers to use Wi-Fi and
cellular location for most purposes. For example, I have the free GPS
Status app installed. It will bring up a notification whenever any app is
using the GPS. Maps 9.4 will never use the GPS until I switch to active
navigation.

My Tracks, similarly, never uses the GPS on the Nexus 6 in Android 5.0.x.
The work around listed is correct.

1. Start a recording in My Tracks
2. Switch over to GPS Status as the active app. It will use the GPS to set
location
3. In the background, My Tracks will record your location.
4. That's a terrible kludge, do not profit.

This behavior appears to be unaffected by your choice of location mode
(eg. "High Accuracy", "Battery Saving", or "Device Only"). Odd behavior
indeed. I can tell the phone to only use GPS ("Device Only" mode) and Maps
will still use Wi-Fi/Cellular location!

The other options: location reporting, location history, and scan for Wi-Fi
even if Wi-Fi is turned off also have no effect.

Same issue as everyone else. I'll just add it was working fine 30 January,
not fine 1 February. I also have an LG G watch R that used to work fine
with My Tracks, so it isn't the introduction of the android wear that
caused the failure.

The issue mentioned in 81140 sounds very different to me. I haven't noticed
the GPS crashing periodically as described in that bug report.

My perception is that other GPS apps work fine. In My Tracks however, the
gps never work at all, even though it claims to be recording. 0 Meters
recorded every time.

HTC One M8 Verizon, Android 5.0.1, My Tracks v2.0.9...

My issue is similar. "Waiting for GPS signal" lasts only a second or so,
but it isn't tracking my path as accurately as it used to. While the "Map"
tab seems to be updating... the interval isn't as frequent I don't think
(cutting off corners when I am walking, etc.) The "Status" tab though
isn't working properly. Even if I am moving for the entirety of a 60
minute walk it is only showing me moving for about 30 minutes or so for
example and not updating enough to give me a decent "speed" number.

I've had the M8 for about 2 months and updated android when it came over
the air. I don't remember if it was working better before the update. I
have been using My Tracks for a few years and found it to work fine on my
Incredible 4G and Razr Maxx before this phone.

I wonder when HTC, Verizon customers will see 5.1 if that might be a fix.

What good is this app when it can't hold a GPS signal? I have a Sprint
Samsung GS3 with Android version 4.4.2, My Tracks version 2.0.9. I use
this app 1.5 to 2.5 hours 5 days per week in my regular exercise. For the
last week, I have been getting the dreaded "Waiting for GPS" message.

I tried the workaround suggested by an earlier poster and downloaded the
GPS Status app. I start the GPS Status app before I start MY Tracks. GPS
Status seems to keep My Tracks working even though My Tracks displays
the "Waiting for GPS" message at times when I turn my phone on to check my
progress.

I'm having the same problem with My Tracks 2.0.10 running on Android 5.01/

walk "Stats" will show a distance of 27 ft. I'll try the workaround
tomorrow.

'MyTracks' has worked. I start GPS Status and allow it to register a
signal then start MyTracks and so far, so good.

This issue severely hurts the value of MyTracks. I would guess this should
be higher than MEDIUM. See snapshot attached.

In mid-July 2015, tracks were gathered accurately (no gaps) on my daily
walks. Since early August 2015 (through at least today 8/19/15), most if
not all tracks show large gaps. For example, on one six mile walk, around
San Jose Airport area, the distance was recorded as 4.5 miles, but actual
distance was more like 5.5-6.0 miles. I NEVER receive a "Waiting for GPS
Signal" message, different from many of the recent commenters, suggesting
possibly two issues here.

Attached screenshot of map showing gaps in the track. My longest stops
were 4 minutes (to buy a sandwich, paused, tracked fine) and 2 minutes
doing stretches. I was running Google Play Music listening to audio most
of the way. Interestingly Google Play Music cut out on me a 4-5 times, but
the locations don't correlate with map cut outs. I seldom run Google Play
Music on my walks, so Google Play Music is not a contributor to the problem
(to my knowledge).

I used to use MyTracks often for kayaking, hiking, biking, for trips to
obscure stores, and even long drives across multiple states. It was the
best route recorder out there. It worked flawlessly on my Samsung Galaxy S2
and S3. Since I got my Galaxy Note 3 it's been non-functional; all I ever
see is "Waiting for GPS signal". I can use GPS for other apps, but not this
one. I've tried every work-around and fix I could find on this and other
sites, but nothing has worked.

Ditto for all of the above for my LG. It was working great than all of a
sudden "waiting . . ." and big gaps in the map and recordings of a few
feet. Besides complex work arounds, how can this be simply fixed? Is
anyone reading this? I really like My Tracks, but this is ridiculous.

I also echo the above problem described in #54. Although the app starts
normally and visibly tracks my progress when I have the screen on and the
app enabled, it seems to track very intermittently or not at all when the
device is locked and the screen is off. I can confirm I recorded a track
normally on 7/25. It did not work 8/1 and still did not work on 8/22. The
phone was rebooted multiple times in between these dates.

The app tracked just 1.75 miles of a 12 mile trip on 8/22 and 6.6 miles of
a ~14 mile trip on 8/1. Both trips were in areas I've successfully used My
Tracks in the past, so I don't believe GPS reception is the problem.

For what it's worth, I turned the screen off (via the power button) and
after a few seconds of movement it still gave be a voice prompt indicating
it had tracked movement. This was before the password-based lock had
happened (set for a 30 second delay).

Whenever I stopped and unlocked my phone to view progress, I could see the
GPS icon. The app appeared to be functioning normally and I didn't see
a "Waiting for GPS message". However generally the app had not been
tracking my progress prior to unlocking, and tracking start up again in
several seconds each time and worked as long as the screen was on and phone
was unlocked.

OK, having come out of the software industry, I know that if an issue
occurs when a client is using your software it is your issue - regardless
of the cause - but I cannot help but wonder if these issues are in some way
related to hardware or modifications to code by specific vendors? When I
initially posted - Dec. 2, 2014 - I was having issues with a "Google Nexus"
phone manufactured by LG. Now I am on a Nexus 6 and I have had exactly
zero issues with "My Tracks" I use it frequently and it has been pretty
darn solid. But it is on a phone optimized for use with Google Android.
Any thoughts?

I am using a Google Phone (Motorola Droid Maxx XT-1080) and it happens to
me. This __IS__ a Google device and therefore should not be happening at
all, at a minimum, right? :)

I could see if I was the only one on this thread who was just chugging
along without a problem, and every other vendor had problems, but I am on a
Google phone (effectively, Motorola is Google) ... so, strikes are MAJOR
against the My Tracks folks because I should be just moving along without
issue ...
