I would like to build a new consumer appliance for the general public
to provide an excellent user experience without the need for
cable/satellite.
I am hoping to build something with:
1. A visually pleasing and intuitive user interface.
2. Powerful and flexible DVR functions.
3. Highly reliable.
4. Low cost.
5. Quiet and low-power.
I am currently considering running XBMC with MythTV on Linux as a
combined FE/BE, using an ARM SOC with an inexpensive tuner (or dual
tuner) primarily for free over-the-air TV in the USA.
I would like to keep the cost to the customer below $200.
I understand that getting acceptable performance with a low-powered
CPU will require hardware decoding, which is not yet available under
Linux for many ARM SOCs. Maybe in the negotiation process with OEMs,
I can help to resolve this situation.
I would be happy to discuss my plans and perspectives. If there is an
interest from your community, I would like to begin a conversation to
discuss how you might help me in the process, and how I might be able
to help the MythTV community in return.
