Ladybug got her new dodger today.  Kind of boxy looking, not as attractive as many others, but it works.  For some reason canvas guys up here must be rolling in money.  This was the third person I tried to hire to make a dodger over the past six year, and this guy started on it last October!

Peter,

The dodger looks like it offers a ton of room and protection! How did you work out the sliding hatch area?

One more. . .

Is your gooseneck high enough so you can sail with it up? Ours, I should say the one on Papoose when we bought her, could not be up, and it was a lot lower than yours.

Hi all, this summer I designed a sun awning/bimini that can be used while sailing with minimum hardware. It zips to the back of our dodger and goes aft to a horizontal pole in a pocket. That attaches to a single vertical pole on center at the back of the cockpit, two lines are led down to the deck or pushpit. Had it up almost all summer to ME and back. Will take some ppics if anyone interested.

They put snaps on the aft edge of the hatch and the forward edge of the hatch.  You have to release the snaps to slide the hatch open or closed.

When I got a new sail made a few years ago, I raised the gooseneck 8" and raised the clew 12".  Cut the sail smaller, losing about 18 sq. ft., but didn't hurt the sailing at all.  I haven't tried sailing with it yet, but there should be no problem.

Peter... The dodger looks great !! What a fine addition to "LADYBUG". I hope all is well. EBB TIDE took some serious knocks during "Irene". Be safe. Jim

Jim,

How serious? Caused by wind, tide or other boats/docks?  Was Ebb Tide in the water?

Papoose was in the water, fortunately her slip is in a great location, very well protected. The water came up another 5+ feet higher than the highest picture shown here.

Hey Jim... Wow PAPOOSE  is a fine looking boat!  Ya that mustve been a lotta water.  Ebbie's bobstay turnbuckle looks like the weak link. Probably stressed by one of the mooring pennants. When that let go her bowsprit went... you can guess the rest.  A little bit of a heartbreaker but Wood, 'glass and paint can be repaired.  Anyone coming up to LEGNOS party in October??  Jim Abbott

I don't think we'll be able to make it. . .again. I really hate that, but work calls.

Jim -  From what I've seen, Craig and Peter have the best condition and you, in my humble opinion, have that rig that just sets it off like no other.

You've got a much longer bowsprit than the rest of us, especially the the 30s. Do you still sail on anchor/mooring?

Anyone hear from Sylvia this year? Did she have a good year of sailing?

It was too hot to do much here right up until Irene hit. Unusually hot, we have not been out since 4th of July. But, we had a few fun weekend adventures sailing to Roanoke Island in the spring, very early summer.

Sylvia is still around.  I talked to her last month, when she was expecting to cruise my area of Long Island Sound.  Unfortunately, she got weathered in and her cruise was too short.  I believe that she said she would attend Peter Legnos's Party.

Hi All,

I entered the discussion yesterday but seems to have disappeared into
the ether-sphere. Just did a reply - but have now logged into the
google-group to email. I'm including my email from yesterday at the
bottom of this one.

And yes, did hope to make it further east but the weather was not
cooperative, which has been the case most of the summer. Between work
and the weather got to do very little sailing this year! And looks
like more rain this weekend.

To everyone who has wooden spars - do you leave the mast in for the
winter? I normally un-step mine. but this year my yard is changing
policy and no longer including it in the price of hauling. Now it's an
additional charge for time and labor, and a separate charge for
storage. It's making me consider leaving it in the water for the
winter!

Looking forward to seeing everyone at Peter's party.

Sylvia

Dear Peter,

I concur - think the the new dodger looks like a wonderful new
addition to the boat! Have you nixed the idea of a bimini? Mine
makes the world of a difference on those hot sunny days - though I can
barely remember what those are like with all this rain.

And Jim - lucky you - do you have your very own dock? That's always
been a dream of mine.

Also, including a link a friend sent from Japan that I found
interesting and thought everyone else might too.

I have my mast hauled out every year, because I don't want to leave it out in the weather.  Raises hell with the varnish, and varnishing is nearly impossible in the northeast.  It's either too cold, too damp, or too sunny.  Waiting for a week of perfect varnishing weather is an exercise in futilitily.

Jim,
What was done with the hatch is he put snaps on the forward and on the aft ends of the hatch.  That way we can fasten the dodger to the hatch whether it's open or closed.  The only drawback is that we have to unsnap the snaps before opening the hatch, or closing it for that matter.  Most of the time it seems we really don't need to use the snaps, as he put a thick rubber gasket on the edge of the dodger that tends to seal it somewhat.  But, when the boat is closed up on the mooring I feel more secure with the snaps fastened.
