Hi All,

With a couple of friends boat's breaking free/dragging anchors this
past week, all the local chatter got me to wondering what each of
you
use.

Papoose;
Primary = 22 lb Claw, 15' 3/8s BBB chain & 150' 3/4 three strand
(will
readily switch anchors depending on bottom)
Except for the anchor size, the rest is overkill in some regards,
but
for example, this weekend we went from 25 mph southwest to 25 mph
northeast without the least bit worry or second thought (or
incident).
My assumption is that this anchor type resets well and the chain
weight is extra insurance. We did that same swing routine all spring
in (mid 30 range) higher winds without incident, so we have a lot of
confidence in the set up (at least at our favorite local anchor spot).

Secondary = 22 lb Danforth with 8' 3/8s BBB chain & 75' 5/8 three
strand(?)

Kedge = 10 lb Danforth with 50' 1/2 three strand.

I switched once to using the Danforth last year and it was also
without any problems, but the Danforth's bar hung up on everything
and
I took it off and put it in the cockpit locker. More importantly to
me, I have learned that Danforth/Fortress anchors may not reset. In
fact, just this weekend a (30' Southern Cross with a 2x recommended
size for boat length) Fortress failed to reset upon a wind direction
shift when we were sailing into anchor at the same harbor. The quick
thinking owner was ashore and went racing out in his dingy, put a
bouy
on his anchor line and freed the bitter end. He threw the anchor
line
overboard and motored the boat to a dock without further incident.
This was a very small harbor so he had no room for error. Since he'd
just retired a couple of weeks ago and moved aboard to go cruising,
this could've turned out very poorly.

What is your experience and suggestion?

Fair Winds,

Jim & Dana

On Ladybug we have three anchors:
Primary =  25# CQR on 20' of 3/8" chain and 225'  3/4 " rode.  Resets well and I sleep well with this anchor down there.  I don't trust Danforth or Fortress anchors because of the resetting problem.

Secondary = 22# Danforth with 22'  7/16" chain and 100' 5/8"  rode.  Never have used it on this boat, but once in 1992 we used it on our 22' catboat in a nor'easter in Plymouth Harbor.  Since I got it at a tag sale for $35 in 1977 I call it cheap insurance.  I've set up a second hawse hole on deck with port & starboard anchor rollers on the bowsprit so I could use both simultaneously.  Both anchor rodes are stored in the forepeak, but the anchor is buried in a cockpit locker along with the kedge.

Kedge = 12# Danforth with 6' 3/8" chain and 50' 3/4" rode.  Used primarily when we anchor fore & aft as in Selden Creek.

Dinghy:  We have a 3# Barnacle anchor for our Fatty Knees dink, a very cute little aluminum anchor.

At home I have a 20" Yachtsman that I used on my catboat, but the stock key went missing.  It's too light for a 10-3 anyway, but looks great in the basement.

Some day I'll find a manual anchor windlass that will fit up there so I can ease my aching back!

Pete
