In my college years I lived/crewed on a small yacht owned by one of
the former crew of Irving & Electra Johnson's Yankee. My first day on
board was punctuated by a traveling British sailor's remark to my
skipper; "You better keep an eye on him if he's from the Outer Banks,
because all his ancestors were pirates, looters and thieves.
I want to tell you about an unbelievable thing one of my neighbors has
discovered even us locals did not know. It is so fantastic that he
wrote a book about it and that book came out just before Irene's
visit. He discovered a huge piece of Outer Banks & literary history no
one new about!
Living down the street from him and watching the serendipitous leads
appear and the results of his exhaustive research, has been one of the
biggest treats of my life. It makes it easy to understand why John
started saying years ago, he is not a reporter of history, but the
narrator of what is "passed" to him - "someone wanted this story to
come out and I can't figure out why they picked me to deliver all of
this." What he discovered happened at Ocracoke in 1750 and would
become the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.
This event far outdid anything Blackbeard did, who was killed at this
same location in 1718. Treasure Island not only shaped our view of
pirates with wooden legs, eye patches and buried treasure, but shaped
the literary world as well! John's research and these serendipitous
happenings led John to the proof that RLS knew about what happened at
Ocracoke and that it was indeed the inspiration for his book.
The book is called Treasure Island: The Untold Story. You can read
more here:
http://www.treasureislandtheuntoldstory.com It's on Amazon.com and he
is uploading it to iTunes today (it will take a week or two to
appear). The author's name is John Amrhein.
