We own Chatte de Mer in the Saco River, Maine.  It is great to see everyone getting excited about the coming season.  If anyone is up this way this summer please let us know.

Chatte is still on the hard but I am working to get her uncovered and to start getting her ready for the season.  We were lucky that her previous owner, Amy Davidoff, who still moors her boat next to ours, replaced the hatch a few years before we bought her.

She is rigged pretty much as Jim indicated with a RF Yankee jib and a staysail.  We still have it rigged to a boom and a traveller so it is self tacking.  We most often sail with the main and the staysail although love to get all the sails out.  In Saco Bay we most often have 15 knots in the afternoon so we put all the sail out.  Under high winds we will reef the main and fly the staysail.  I am still learning so thanks for the hints, we will try them this summer.

I gather the horse traveller is the rigging with a sliding "horse" along the traveller, not a block.  Is that right?  I still have that on the staysail and the main, although I am going with a more modern traveller for the main so I can get a little better point with the main.

Great to see all the beautiful Mystic 30s still going strong.  So many complements on our boat when we are out.  Legendary.  Here is a picture that we love - off Wood Island light - "racing" a friends Pearson.

Great to hear from you David! Tell Amy Hi for me.

If you're on Facebook, we now have pages that replace the pages we had on Google Groups.  https://www.facebook.com/MysticSailboats   Anyone who hasn't already, please click "Like". Anyone who wants to manage the page, let me know and I'll make you a manager so you can post photos etc.

It's my understanding that the horse is the bronze rod that the blocks slide on. Is that correct Peter? Anyone?

Jim

One more staysail rigging photo from our Facebook page. This is Amaru and the setup is a bit different than what we've talked about so far.

Hey Jim, et al. -

Yes, Amaru does not have the bronze horse, but three blocks. There are two lines running aft on the port side. The sheet runs from to a block on the coach top on the port side, upt to a double block on the end of the stay boom and through the block on the starboard side, back through double block, and made fast on the port side. The second line is an outhaul for the stay sail, which is on a roller furling. Overall it has been a satisfactory setup, although with the addition of the roller furling line, that makes three lines heading aft just for the staysail.

Jim,

Right, the traveler horse is simply a bronze rod upon which the block rides.  Later boats had stainless steel travelers.
