Much in the vein of the Convert your Character series, I came up with
a variant warlock. Mechanically they are similar to multi-class
Warlock/Wizards.
>:-

The Invoker is based on the Warlock class, and is an Arcane Striker
that changes many of the class features. Firstly, they use Wizard's
Implements. I am toying with Prime Shot doing +1 damage instead of
doing +1 to hit. Shadow Walk should be made more thematic, but I can't
think of anything right now.

Invokers are an alternative to the Warlock’s established background,
as warlocks are considered upstarts in Glantri, while Invokers are
considered the same as wizards, spellcaster scholars who spend years
mastering magic. The Glantrian spellcasting elite consider anyone who
does not go through the same grueling learning process they did as
being inferior. While they tolerate other non-divine casters who did
not have to study like a wizard does, they are disdainful of them.

Mechanically the same, Invokers refer to their Wizard’s Mark rather
than their Warlock’s Curse. They choose to specialize in the Energy
Path (Infernal powers), Force Path (Star powers), or the Middle Path
(Fey powers). Invokers of the Energy Path choose between Fire, and
Lightning. Invokers of the Force Path may choose between Force and
Radiant. Invokers of the Middle Path may choose between Cold and
Thunder. Invokers may convert the damage type of their spells to their
chosen damage type as they cast them.

A quick example: Bastion is a 5th level Invoker, he is on the Force
path (Radiant). He could choose to unleash Dire Radiance as a bolt of
searing light, or an invisible column of force.

It is very common for Invokers to select multi-class wizard powers
matching their chosen damage type.

Your posting reminded me of an idea that I have
been mulling over for some time. In 4E, there is
very little overlap in powers among the classes
-- generally, only rituals count as spells common
to multiple classes. However, the gazetteers
for Alfheim and the Five Shires add greatly
to the spellcasting abilities of elves (eladrin?)
and halflings, respectively, with the inclusion
of many cleric and druid spells in the elven
"magic-user" list and the inclusion of many
magic-user spells in the halfling "cleric"
list.

So -- I was wondering whether it would be
too much of a stretch to suggest that elves
(eladrin?) who use the divine source apply
an arcane flourish to their prayers that causes
them to be considered "magic-users", while
dwarves and halflings who use the arcane
source apply a divine flourish to their spells
that causes them to be considered "clerics"?
This social masking would permit all races
to have members of all classes in the
mechanical sense without upsetting aspects
of the Mystaran setting that are based on
certain races having class limitations.
Would this work, or would it be too
confusing?

By the way -- I have also been mulling over
the social advancement tests that magocracies
such as Glantri and Alphatia might administer
to aspiring magocrats. It turns out that the 4E
rules make some very precise tests possible
to test just what each of these societies is
looking for in their candidates.

I think I also found some hints as to the fates
of the dragonborn and tiefling races in the
free Savage Coast Monstrous Compendium
-- the goatman and wallara pictures and their
accompanying texts suggest that these races
might be degenerated primitive descendants
of races that were once far more advanced
and widespread.

As far as I know, there are very few (and I mean very few if any)
resistances, immunities or vulnerabilities to sources. So while
something may be vulnerable to radiant or acid, it isn't more or less
vulnerable to Arcane or Divine, so you can simply change the trappings
and the source to fit your liking. The whole convert your character
series is about picking the class that has the powers and role you
want, and filing the numbers off until your character concept is met.
