I posted some thoughts about how 4e might affect Mystara in general over on the WotC boards; short version is "not much; Mystara won't get much official attention, fans will probably be able to use the 4e rules for Mystara as well as 3e or 3.5e, Mystara as a setting will continue to be as interesting as ever."  This is neither the Second Coming nor the Apocalypse.

For the Mystara-d20 project, though, we might want to take a big step away from most rules mechanics for about the next nine months.  4e will have core-rules levels ranging from 1-30, which is going to re-ignite the "Level 36 RC character -> Level ??? d20" debate - but IMHO in a *good* way, as there's a much broader core-rules range to draw upon.  4e will likely also have a much better way for handling multiclassed fighter-wizards than the 'grab a specially designed prestige class ASAP' of 3.5e, which will make statting up RC Elves that much easier.

In short, unless the will of the community is to disavow 4e sight unseen, we should wait to see what it looks like - and probably adopt 4e for conversion work.  It's not like we're due to finish a 3.5e conversion before mid-2008 anyway. =/

Personally, despite the advent of 4E I continue to be interested in converting Mystara to 3.5E/d20. I own so many 3.5E (and 3E) books and am in or run so many 3.5E campaigns that I doubt I'm going to shell out for 4E any time soon. If anyone else wants to get a Mystara-4E project started, all the power in the world to them. Anyone who doesn't think it's worth doing a 3.5E/d20 conversion now that 4E is coming out is welcome to unsubscribe from the project group. Either way, I intend to slug it out.

 

And I know nothing much has happened since the announced resurrection of the project, but I have said that things would probably be slow going sometimes - real life absolutely takes precedence for me, and, well, once again, it has had to.

 

Nevertheless, there is stuff percolating in the back of my brain and when additional I miraculously have more free time available again, you can bet your two coppers I'll make myself heard. ;-)
