There are many messenger services and software products available. Most such products make use of a central server that co-ordinates communications. If the server is located outside of your network, it poses a great security threat to your company.
Most commercial messenger products require Internet access to connect to their authorization server. Not only this creates a security threat in your network, but the whole service becomes unavailable should the Internet connection fail. Winpopup LAN Messenger does not use an external connection to the Internet, nor does it require an IP address. Instead, all communication remains within the local network area, never leaving the secured Intranet environment.

The net send command only works on NT platforms as it requires the messenger service to run.
There are a couple of ways to get this to work with Win9X clients. The first is to use WinPopUp. I tried this program and found it pretty useless.
I have since found a program that runs on Win9X clients and functions exactly like the messenger service on NT.

You can either send to a username, PC, or entire domain.

The message then popups on the rest of the machines as they are logged in which were not in use at the time the message was sent. I would like to know how to prevent these messages to popup on machines which didn't get this popups yet.
This is if message was sent to the whole domain.

This should stop you receiving and sending net sends.

2. I can send messages to users by computer name/IP no problem. Usernames - No way! Cannot find the user is what lovely Windoze informs me! Is this a NetBIOS issue as I think I turned all NetBIOS off at the time this problem happened. (I think!)

If you really are going to use this, given you have computers with NT, XP, 2000; then why not write a small program interface to do it quickly. You can spoof the name to make it say something useful like Networking Dept.; no actually has to be one word so NET_DEPT. or whatever. this function works across domains as i have found. It has error checking also, not sure what they are off hand. If you still want to do it at the prompt you type: net view /domain to view all the domains on your network. pick a domain and view those computer like: net view /domain:workgroup then pick a computer from that workgroup and type: net send accounting001 Accounting server is shutting down. of course you can net send to a whole domain!! net send /domain:workgroup Company downsizing pick up last check on way out door. yeah not funny right.
