Our journey started in Ulaanbaatar, which is the coldest capital in the world and the one farthest away from the ocean. Like Kathmandu it does not have a McDonald's - but surprisingly Ulaanbaatar has an IKEA and 5 "A"s in its name, which makes it literally over-qualified for our triple "A" trip! The city is accommodating nearly half of the population of Mongolia, which is quite special given the nomadic origin of the Mongolians. Apart for job and educational reasons Ulaanbaatar's attractiveness remains a mistery to us. The average citizen is not even provided with the most obvious advantages of a city: running water or paved streets. Also, the coal power station in the middle of town and the never ending traffic jams ensure air pollution par excelence. On top of all that building sites for new office towers and apartments in between old Soviet buildings, log houses and gers give this city a very special and chaotic character. Mongolians are driving on the right hand side of the street - however, this does not prevent half of them to buyJapanese cars, which were originally designed to drive on the other side of the street.
