Cultivating Hope

for safe and nutritious food future in India

A conversation with Sustainable Farmers and the Changemakers

15th September (Tuesday) 2020

Time- 5.00-7.00 pm

Greetings from Greenpeace India!

About this conversation

Everything else can wait but not agriculture.” This visionary statement is proving itself even after 75 years. Coronavirus pandemic and national lockdown has plunged the national economy but agriculture as a sector has not only survived but has increased its percentage from 3.1% to 3.4% from the last quarter. The credit goes to the hardworking and committed farmers of the country. But are they getting benefited from this success of theirs?

Monthly income of farmers from 5 Indian states is less than 5000 rupees. The highest amount of around 14 thousand is earned by an average Haryana farmer a month. The national average is still less than 6500 rupees. The Government of India's resolve to double farmers’ incomes by 2022 is a positive move but is facing multifaceted challenges.

Interestingly, there are several solution models too, which helped farmers in increasing their incomes significantly. More interestingly, most of these success stories are connected to ecological farming practices. Organic farmers in India are increasing in numbers dramatically. Their produced foods are fetching huge profits in the markets. Indian consumers too are investing more on their groceries with the expectation of food being safe, healthy and nutritious. The organic market is also growing significantly but somehow all these are not truly getting translated into respectable gains for organic producers.

Let us talk with the protagonists of the change themselves and hear directly from them about their concerns, inspirations, challenges and solutions. Let's also give a sincere listening to those who are working with huge numbers of farmers to make agriculture a more remunerative and dignified source of livelihood for farmers. We will try to identify threads to weave the web of solidarity among consumers, farmers and the civil society and co-create a resilient food system amid crises and pandemics.
