This is not a MyPeace post. Nor is it a OPW post. In fact all the
thought in this post are mine and mine alone. Just wanted to get that
out of the way. At this time of year when it is often dark and cold
outside, I take some time to reflect on this past year and how it has
affected my life. But before I reflect on this year I want to wish all
of you who read this post a very Merry Christmas and a Happy
Hanukkah. Now as for getting along with one another I have but a
few simple rules. 1. Try to walk through life with humility. Don't be
boastful or proud. If you are truly successful at something people
will recognize it. 2. Realize you are no better than anyone else, but
nobody is better than you either. God doesn't make crap. And 3. Don't
argue with an idiot. You'll only bring yourselves down to their level.
And waste a lot of time in the process. Instead have a pleasant talk
with a friend. Now as most of you know I will be leaving OPW at the
end of this month. It has been a pleasure and a privilege getting to
know all of you so well this past year. And what a year it has been.
During the past year many things have happened to me on a private
level that have been very painful to me. The loss of a pet cat to
cancer. The loss a a friend I had known for over over 50 years to
suicide. The death of a first cousin. The death of my brother's father
in law. ( died the same day as the cat ). And finally the night of the
shindig an 80 foot tall elm tree crashed down on my house and garage
and patio. As well as 3 other neighboring homes. But I am whole, still
here and in good spirits. So as 2010 slips into 2011, I just wanted to
wish you all a very good next year. Try to be good to one another.
Remember we are here to make this a better world than the one we
inherited. So good bye fellow MyPeacers, and thanks for a groovy year.
Peace.

Dan, thanks for the well-wishes for the holiday season. I wish you the
same. How sad that your 2010 was so marked with death and destruction.
How wonderful the way you philosophize your way through it. I hope the
pain of your losses will melt by spring and yield new growth and
wisdom about the cycles of life and our march in step with it...both
happy and sad.

Thanks for your tips about getting alone. One question, about #3: when
you say "idiot," I wonder if you're joking? It seems to contradict #2,
which says that God doesn't make "crap," which would include idiots, I
suppose. So, how do you define "idiot" in a way that makes him or her
equal to you, regardless of your having anything in common?

Best wishes for landing a great position in January, for finding
something that draws on your talents and your heart strings with equal
measure. And thanks for the energy and skills you brought to MyPeace.

God doesn't make crap, but sometimes people behave like idiots. It's
not the worth of the person I take exception with, rather their
behavior. What I am trying to say is to avoid arguing with people who
behave like idiots. Example, use of profanity, racial or ethnic slurs,
threats. You get the picture. Have a pleasant conversation with
someone who is civil. Even if they disagree with you.
