I've heard that I'm instructed, by OPW staff, to turn over MyPeace
Project data, I recorded on CCTV equipment, to OPW. I'm the legal
proprietary owner of this data and, as such, may do what I wish with
it, within the bounds of the production contract in effect between
CCTV and myself. I wish to uphold the ethical duty I think I have
toward MyPeace and act in accord with the judgment of that
organization.

As I've stated previously, in order for me to download the data I have
stored in my hard drives to MyPeace, MyPeace must have an Apple
formatted external hard drive to receive it. Failing this, the data
will be erased upon discharge of my contractual obligation to CCTV.

I spoke with Linda yesterday, and informed her we do have the hard drive ready for you.

Thank You Carrie, I'll pick it up, have it formatted and download data as soon as I can.  I will then hold the drive and data until completion of the contracted production of a program for airing on CCTV.  Accomplishing that, I will turn the drive and contents over to MyPeace.  I anticipate this taking place no later than February.

Hi Bob,

I think "requested" rather than "instructed" would be more accurate,
but yes, the group asked OPW to purchase a 1 TB hard drive for the
purpose of archiving your video footage and I did so. In the
meantime, we have started using that HD for our backups and it is
formatted for Windows. However, if you could tell me in GB how much
material you have, I would make appropriate arrangements.

Thanks,

Peter

Is it a correct reading of your message that MyPeace has NOT purchased a Hard Drive designated for archiving video recording data as I requested and was approved by MyPeace organizers?  It appears as though OPW purchased a hard drive and is using it for OPW purposes.

Will you please clarify this?  P.S. If you intend claiming OPW ownership and control of MyPeace and its assets, will you please prepare to prove this claim by factual (legal) documentation, as if it were being adjudicated.  I truly hope we don't have to go there but it is an option.

The correct reading, Bob, is that we purchased the hard drive for the purpose MyPeace requested it and it sat around here for a while unused. Since it is a very large HD, I thought we might put OPW backups on it AS WELL AS the archived footage, forgetting for the moment that it would have to be formatted for a Mac to be able to use it for the footage.

Since the last set of video files you brought in on a flash drive, and which I placed on another hard drive here, was quite small, I thought it might work to put the other files you have on a smaller drive than the one we purchased. That's why I asked about the file size. Would you be willing to answer my question about the size of file storage required? With that information I could determine whether we need to make other arrangements for the backups here to free up the 1 TB drive. How much space are those video files currently occupying?

Also, could we get a little more loving kindness into these emails, please? I think we're all trying to do the best we can.

Thank You Peter.  The raw data files are probably no more than 50 gig.  Though, in order to work with them they must be translated into Hi-Def video clips compatible with the Apple editing program.  In this case, I anticipate 360 gigs for storing High Definition Video production clips and an additional 100 gigs or more for video production programing for around 460-500 gigs of needed memory capacity.  I'll verify this today while I'm at CCTV.  I believe I recorded about 60 min. at US Bank, 90-120 min. at Coffee House Cafe, 120 min. at the Grand Theater, and 60 min on First Wednesday.  Storage of this Hi-Def recording runs about 1 gig per minute in the Apple production/archiving format.  It is certainly possible to store the raw data (50 gigs) as a file in another storage device and use it in another editing/video production program after I've met the contractual obligation with CCTV.  Yet, I must Apple format a Hard Drive to complete that production.  I think that when the Hard Drive is formatted it will wipe-out whatever's on the drive.

Whatever takes place, it will not occur until at least mid January because I'm busy with three productions at this time.  I'm happy MyPeace has purchased the requested hard-drive and that you clarified this because I need things clearly communicated.

Hi Peter and Bob;

I have noticed that a number of folks have partitioned an external hard drive for both Mac and for Windows, one partition of maybe 500 gig in this case for HFS+ Mac storage and the other 500 gig partition in NTFS for Windows.  It is not exactly a walk in the park to set up, but can be done.  One solution I ran across is as follows:

1. Download the Windows program Acronis Disk Director. This program will partition your hard drive and keep all the files intact!

2. Connect your external drive to windows and open the program. Choose the drive you wish to partition.

3. Set the partition size to whatever you want and set the new partition to be blank with no set file system on it.

4. The program will partition the drive. A 1 TB drive only took about 25 minutes to partition.

5. Connect the external hard drive to Mac and open Disk Utility.

6. In Disk Utility select the blank partition you just created and click on erase. From there you can choose to create the volume format as Mac OS Extended.

Unfortunately Acronis Disk Director  is $49 so maybe you would rather just buy another hard drive.

David

Hi David,

Thanks for the info! :-)

I did speak with the techies at CCTV and was told they could partition the Hard Drive.  They also recommended 1 TB as okay for the HD video memory and 2TB as best. Basically anything less means needing to clear space or purchase another Hard Drive, if there is any more HD video data to be used in production for presentation on CCTV.  The bottom line is, yes the drive can be partitioned with enough capacity to archive MyPeace 2010 HD video and other data.

Thanks for making this clear, Bob. It appears that you really do need at least a 500 GB drive. Rather than start over configuring the new backup system, I decided to buy a second drive, which I just did on Ebay. It's this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110618612589&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT . It should arrive within a few days to a week. I hope this will be satisfactory to all. I will let you know when it arrives.
