Alongwith this lesson comes the realization that the most important thing you have to show for yourself, especially as a young adult, is your reputation. You should be doing everything in your power to build and preserve a good reputation. Also, at the end of the day you have to feel good about yourself. Have you ever laid awake in the wee hours of the morning fretting about something you did or said, whether it was cheating on an exam or lying to a potential employer or being mean to a friend, realizing the transgression of the day was not worth the pain it caused?

If there is one important lesson that life has taught me to date, its that when you remove the agenda or expectation from any experience, you are left with the pureness of the human spirit. Good deeds happen every single day and it is those that are truly and authentically serving in the spirit of being an authentically good person are ALWAYS rewarded in whatever form appreciation shows up in.
I was blessed to have had a wonderful upbringing and was always taught to be empathetic towards others. That level of appreciation for others in your world that can be more or even less fortunate than yourself. The gift of seeing every human being as a human being, and removing the judgement of identity and labels would, and still does, serve me so well in the experiences of my life.
I truly believe no good deed goes unnoticed yet the most important person that needs to notice is yourself. In the spirit of conversation I recently shared a wonderful memory that has always and will continue to be my north pointing moral compass in serving humanity by simply thinking of others. As a 24 year old kid, I was one year into running my own business as a mobile mechanic. I had goals, aspirations and dreams that only money could buy, yet soon learned the value of relationships that had an even greater sense of satisfaction. The business slowly grew from survival to thriving in the many opportunities I created which ultimately stemmed from meeting and serving complete strangers that would later become very good friends.
It was through a simple letterbox drop one day that the sweetest lady gave me a call. "Excuse me dear, I got your flyer in the mailbox and I think my car needs good looking over she said". In the beautiful suburb of Woodvale, in the Northern suburbs of Perth, I arrived the following week to tend to her car. This sweet lady greets me upon arrival, waiting in the driveway for me to show-up at 9am sharp. An early riser at 93 years of age, she was still as sharp as if those numbers were reversed. This beautiful smile and gratitude for me firstly arriving on time, then leads to a conversation about her old car named "Percy".
She then showed me her meticulously kept service records and in searching through I was absolutely astounded at the charges her previous mechanics had been charging her. This was a vehicle that was 10 years old with only 10,000km's travelled to date AND with service receipts of $1000 + per invoice. I could hardly believe my eyes. She had been fleeced for unnecessary items and was completely unaware that she had been taken advantage. As I read through the invoices I made a very conscious decision to NOT share my disgust with her from her previous repairer, yet choose gratitude in the fact that she had called me this time and I can look after her and prevent it from happening again. It all went to a perfect plan!!!
Six months later, almost to the date she called me again. "Excuse me dear, I hope you remember me but Percy needs a service again". Booked in, I travelled to her place again and just like a dejavu scene she was waiting patiently in the carport for my arrival. I was greeted with coffee, biscuits and the most genuine of smiles. She left and entrusted me with the service and as I began, I soon realised through a simple calculation, she had only travelled 100 kms in the past 6 months. You see, at 93 years of age she lives in an area that has everything close to home. She would drive to the shops which was 100 metres from her home and the occasional doctor visit in the next suburb over. This car needed "NOTHING" in the way of maintenance and I dread to think what the previous mechanic may have charged for that "opportunity". I did a safety check, topped the fluids, pumped the tyres and gave her a whopping bill of $0 dollars. I gave her the peace of mind that the car is perfectly safe and suggested annual servicing is all she needed. A kiss on the cheek and warm cup of coffee was payment enough.
In the seven years of running this business, it was moments like these that allowed me to rest so comfortably knowing that my intention was always to serve first. I did not respond out of sympathy or ever make a choice to take advantage of anyone in any situation. I also never expected anything in return. What happened next is something that has stayed with me forever.
This beautiful woman's son called me up that evening. "Mate, I just rang to say thank you so much for looking after my mother with her car. You know she has been ripped off in the past. She told me what you did today. I'm blown away. You have restored my faith in humanity! So, I have something as a thank you for you. I have a business with 20 vehicles. I want you to come and look after them and service them for me. You interested?"
Do you think that was a giant leap forward for a small business in it's second year of operation? It was an incredible opportunity!!!! But what's most important and WHY I truly wish to highlight these wonderful lessons is that I gave without expecting. I did not have an agenda other than to do what's right. I had no agenda yet something wonderful happened on the other side of having a genuine desire to serve others.
"A moral compass allows us to genuinely serve with a pure intent. Those who give without expectation, yet do so simply because it feels right, will always be rewarded in so many forms." - Andrew Davey
In recognition of the support that PRCA-sanctioned rodeos contribute to local, regional and national charities, Hesston by Massey Ferguson presents the Sowing Good Deeds contest. The contest is a chance to recognize and share the stories of rodeo teams across the country who are doing good in their communities.
Each year, five finalists are selected from dozens of nominations, where one rodeo committee will win a Massey Ferguson tractor for the great work they do. The winner is announced during the National Finals Rodeo gala in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Good deeds are spontaneous acts of kindness, accommodation, generosity, benevolence, charity, assistance, help, sympathy, or aid, all performed with the simple intention of being helpful with no expectation for compensation of any kind. Having been raised by kind and caring parents, throughout my lifetime I have tried to do good deeds. Not all have gone unpunished.
I recently did what I thought was a good deed. I thought I was being helpful. I thought I was bringing attention to something important. I wanted it to create interest. I only wanted the best for all involved. I was severely criticized for doing it. I was made to feel it was none of my business. I was made to feel that I had done something wrong even though I was within my legal rights. I was told to STOP doing anything to help.
At first my feelings were hurt. Then I felt angry. I vowed to never do any good deeds for them in the future. I thought maybe I just shouldn't try to do good deeds for anyone. As I thought about the situation more, I realized that not everyone involved was criticizing -- just a few.
For years I have kept a piece from a newspaper posted on my refrigerator. I have no idea how long ago I put it there or where I got it. I just recently found out that it is from Anyway: The Paradoxical Commandments by Dr. Kent M. Keith, a well known speaker and writer. Every once in a while I have a reason to read it. This was one of those times. I would like to share it with you. The title is "ANYWAY."
People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered. Love them anyway. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway. If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. The biggest people with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest people with the smallest minds. Think big anyway. People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for some underdogs anyway. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway. People really need help but may attack if you do help them. Help people anyway. Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you've got anyway.
For those of you who believe in doing good deeds, I would like to share the following quote. "Don't ever regret your good deeds even when it is abused. Don't lose heart you will be vindicated and obtain favor with God and man." ( Buky Ojelabi)
When my UPS informed delivery emailed me to say I had a package coming from LSS, I was stumped. Usually there's a conversation before these things get boxed up and mailed; and in the situations where there hasn't been, Christmas was to blame. Unless LSS suddenly became very enthusiastic about Easter, this wasn't a holiday promo.
Without debate, the most enviable part of this kit is the streaming dice set. (Sorry, those are not part of the giveaway!) But while the incredible tournament assets had been seen before, that stack of promo cards was all-new. Here's the card in all its glory:
Personally, I felt the sentiment of the title was apt. LSS is essentially saying, "We see what you're doing for our game and its community, and we want to thank you for it." (Does that make me the wandering bard, and LSS the tree spirits in the upper right?) And its in the furthering of that spirit that I want to manage this giveaway.
