ThePride Myrtle Beach Pageant is an inclusive pageant presented by Pride Myrtle Beach, Inc. The mission of this pageant is to provide a voice for all those we represent in the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina area, who identify as LGBTQ+. Through this pageant, we plan to encourage, support and give back to our community through fundraising and volunteerism.

About the Event: The Pride Myrtle Beach Pageant 2024 is an oppertunity for our talented performers to compete for the title of Miss, Mr. or MX Pride Myrte Beach by completing four categories: Presentation, Evening Wear, On-stage Question, and Talent.

This year, we bid a heartfelt farewell and extend our deepest thanks to Jayla Serena Mitchell, Miss Pride Myrtle Beach 2023. Her dedication and contributions to Pride Myrtle Beach have left an indelible mark on our hearts and our community.

Parking near Pageant of the Masters can be challenging during peak hours. The Miss & Jr. Miss Sylvan Beach Pageant is one of the cornerstones of the Sylvan Beach Festival. The pageant, originally titled The Sylvan Beach Bathing Beauty Contest, has come a long way since its inception in 1924!

Pageant Park is located on beautiful Crystal Lake on the outskirts of Barton Village providing a quieter and more secluded option to Crystal Lake State Park. The park was named after a pageant put on in 1921 to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Barton Town. Three hundred townspeople participated in this professionally choreographed pageant and 4,500 paying spectators came to watch the event.

On November 13, 1911 Charles P. Cutler deeded the park over to Barton Village. Pageant Park is now a public beach and campground which remains open to the

public during the summer months. In honor of the original agreement, season passes are still given annually, free of charge, to Village residents. Visitors residing

outside the Village may purchase a season pass at the Village office or pay by the day at the park.

The park offers 15 RV campsites, in addition to tent sites, which can be rented seasonally or by the night. In the fall of 2017 the park was upgraded to have full utility hookups at all RV sites. Campsites each have a fire ring and grills are available at the beach area.

Pageant Park Pavilion is available to rent for outdoor events hosted at the park. This open air structure can accommodate up to 50 people and includes picnic tables for your convenience. The Pavilion is available for rental only during the parks open season. Contact the Village Office for additional information or to reserve this space during the off season. Otherwise, the Pageant Park Caretaker can be contacted during open months.

Girls from the ages of 16 to 20 who have never been married or had a child may apply. Contestants participate in the Firemen's parade, and the contest is held directly afterwards. The winner rides in the Potomac River Festival Grand Feature Parade the next day.

The 2013 Miss Colonial Beach pageant was rescheduled to Saturday, June 8th due to weather. It immediately followed the Grand Feature parade and took place on the Town Stage. All pageant participants rode in the parade.

The cast is divided into two groups of 150 that rotate each week. The volunteers, wearing costumes, makeup and headpieces, pose in the artworks, frozen for 90 seconds, as narrator Richard Doyle provides the story backed by an orchestra. The pageant typically draws more than 200,000 attendees each year. Besides the pandemic, the pageant has only gone dark one other time during World War II.

Challis Davy starts the show with the pageant orchestra playing the National Anthem. At the same time, the American flag is raised on a hillside near the Irvine Bowl, the outdoor auditorium surrounded by coastal sage-filled hillsides where the pageant is put on. The flag is lit up and displayed on a 1940s-era pole.

Another is the recreation of a photo by Dorothea Lange accompanied by two songs written by Woody Guthrie. The photo illustrates the heartache of the Great Depression. The tableau vivant is followed by a recreation of a brightly colored Work Projects Administration mural that celebrates the resiliency of the American can-do spirit.

For some contestants, there were role models who stood in their shoes years before. As 17-year-old Mackenzie Pinet waited outside the dressing room in the minutes before she was called on stage, she recalled the family history that comes with the pageant.

For the rest of the year, the winning queen Brophy will represent Hampton Beach at festivals, parades and events, a symbol of everything Hampton has to offer. But for now, she said she has other plans.

"Some people have a stigma about pageants, that they are all about beauty and glamour," Ruffa said. "I have some friends who were involved with the Miss America Pageant organization and I found out they are about empowering women to rise up as leaders in their communities."

As part of the Miss America Scholarship Program, the Miss South Carolina and Miss South Carolina Teen pageants provide scholarships and opportunities for young women to support their communities through public service.

As an attendee, I was able to go behind-the-scenes an hour or so before the show and saw several of the artworks up close on stage. But there was something obviously missing: the characters. While the execution of each landscape and scene was impressive, it wasn't until I was seated in the audience and saw the performers in their roles that each artwork truly came to life. There were times that I felt like I was at a museum viewing the original masterpieces and not in a theater surrounded by fellow art lovers.

Once the lineup is in place, a team of set designers helmed by technical director Richard Hill creates the sets, with each one replicating the artworks down to the slightest brushstrokes. Strategic lighting is used to transform each piece from three-dimensional to two-dimensional, eliminating any shadows that cast members might make during their 90-second performance. An oversized frame borders the scene. Costumery and makeup are also important to getting the illusion just right. Each costume is custom-made by a group of designers and volunteers using muslin, with every piece painted with a combination of acrylic and latex paint in the exact likeness of the original artwork. Volunteer makeup artists use both makeup and body paint to ensure that the cast members resemble the subjects of the art. Often digital projections and LED lighting are incorporated to add the final touches before the curtain goes up.

Cast members are also volunteers, and many of them have been coming back to perform year after year, including Michelle Pohl, who appeared in her first pageant in 1987 at the age of five. (Her role was in The Family Gathering, a Dresden porcelain piece, the artist unknown.) She volunteered as a cast member off and on until 2019; this year marks her first pageant as makeup director, leaning into her background as an artist. Although she's no longer in the cast, her husband, daughter and son are featured regularly.

That trick of the eye is what Challis Davy strives for, and to keep audiences captivated she tries to include a new artwork each season, she does rely on a few fan favorites that get reused again and again.
