Wannamaker, Leslie. "For a project, I've chosen modern actors for Act 1 of Romeo and Juliet. Do you have any suggestions?" edited by eNotes Editorial, 13 Apr. 2011, -and-juliet/questions/modern-actors-romeo-juliet-398128.

Johnny Depp is 40+ but looks too young for Lord Montague. Rememberthat his wife tells Montague that he should use a crutch instead of a sword inAct I when the feud breaks anew. What about Jack Black? He can bemade to look older easily since he has the mature figure already.

I think that you need someone more menacing and angry to playTybalt. Taylor Lautner doesn't come across like that to me. Based on recent performances, Charlie Sheen might be good, though he is a bitold. Maybe 50 Cent? What about Michael Imperioli? He waspretty good at being angry and dangerous in The Sopranos.

For the Nurse, you need someone older and fatter and bawdier. RoseanneBarr would have been great, but she's not exactly modern anymore. Ifyou've ever heard of her, I think she'd be good because she's so crass. Ican totally see her saying the things the nurse says.

The production is modern, sexy, diverse, and does a wonderful job at finding the humour amidst the tragedy. Ishia Bennison, as Nurse, is a scene-stealer, and evokes the warmth and love of an Italian nonna (although this production is quite firmly set in a British context).

Whyman has managed to produce an exciting and modern production which will have viewers leaving the theatre thinking differently about the play. It is both early modern tragedy, and a play that resonates with our time. Whyman shows us that conflict between parents and children, falling in love for the first time, youth violence and knife crime are timeless issues, and that this Shakespeare play can indeed be staged in new and thought-provoking ways.

A mere glance at the film will show anyone with even the slightest knowledge of the play that the two are ferociously different in terms of setting, costume, casting, music, and props. A closer reading, however, will also illuminate significant deviations in verse.

The differences between these two works are distinctly illustrated in Act One, Scene One of the text and its matching film scene. Here Shakespeare's text shows Samson and Gregory of the house of Capulet exchanging in witty banter:

The ensuing fight scene provides an excellent example of the difference in choreography and props. In the text, the characters all fight with swords, on a stage empty of all but citizens of the watch. In the ultra-modernized film, the characters are all possessed of pistols bearing the name of their respective houses, and they make use of the surrounding cars, film extras, and various architectural trappings of the gas station where the fight is staged. Interestingly enough, though, when Benvolio entreats the Capulets and his fellow Montagues to lower their weapons, the wording does not exchange swords for guns, but remains as it reads in the original text (1.1 57).

The 1996 film Romeo + Juliet, also known as "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet," is a romantic crime movie directed, written, and produced by Baz Luhrmann. The updated version of William Shakespeare's tragedy still uses the original language, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes portraying the two star-crossed lovers who come from feuding families.

The supporting cast includes Brian Dennehy, Harold Perrineau, John Leguizamo, Paul Sorvino, Pete Postlethwaite, and Diane Venora. This is the third main adaptation of the play; it was previously filmed in 1936 and 1968.

20th Century Fox released the film on November 1, 1996, to generally positive reviews. It raked $147 million at the box office, exceeding the production budget of $14.5 million by a significant margin. DiCaprio won the Silver Bear for Best Actor and Luhrmann received the Alfred Bauer Prize at the 47th Berlin International Film Festival in 1997.

The production of the 1996 classic, Romeo + Juliet, took place across multiple continents. With pre-production in Australia and Canada and post-production in Australia, some parts of the film were shot in Miami, yet most of the scenes were filmed in Mexico City and Boca del Rio, Veracruz. These locations provided a wide range of landscapes that sprung the famed Romeo and Juliet story to life.

Mexico City is a vibrant location with a rich history that provided an ideal backdrop for this classic tragedy. Streets adorned with Spanish Colonial architecture and filled with colorful murals provide a unique atmosphere. The backdrop of this densely populated city juxtaposes perfectly with rural Veracruz's coastline beaches and forests which represent the more romantic elements of Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers' tale.

A trip to experience the Romeo + Juliet filming location is certainly worthwhile as they each offer their own unique identities. There are plenty of cultural activities worth exploring in the city, including visiting archaeological sites like Teotihuacan or visiting historical sites like Chapultepec Castle while Veracruz provides travelers with beautiful hiking trails through lush jungles or peaceful days spent relaxing on its sandy beaches. Both areas also have great food options allowing visitors to experience local cuisine as they explore these areas that served as inspiration for one of cinema's greatest love stories.

Verona Beach is home to two rival business empires, the Capulets and the Montagues. The long-standing animosity between Fulgencio (Paul Sorvino) and Gloria Capulet (Diane Venora), Ted (Brian Dennehy), and Caroline Montague (Christina Pickles) is shared by the younger generations of both families.

Baz Luhrmann's vibrant and successful retelling of the Shakespeare play was set in "Verona Beach," which appears to be in Miami but was actually filmed at the renowned Churubusco Studios in Mexico City.

The Studio is a premier production facility known for its cutting-edge technologies and state-of-the-art facilities. It houses 9 soundstages with capabilities for exterior shooting, two large open lots, and over 6500 m2 of green screen space. Additionally, the studio has modern lighting equipment, makeup rooms, and other amenities that make it an attractive destination for filmmakers seeking an excellent production facility.

After being informed of this third civil brawl, Captain Prince (Vondie Curtis-Hall) sternly warns that any further disturbance will mean dire consequences for both sides.

To add a bit of fun to the mix, the Sheraton Mexico City Maria Isabel Hotel, located at Av. Paseo de la Reforma 325 in Cuauhtmoc, was cheekily transformed into the Capulet's HQ tower block. On the opposite corner, the Banorte Bank tower became Montague's HQ. This unique building is situated close to the Monument to Revolution and only a few blocks away from central Mexico City.
