TheMIND Award 2013 - Summary
-----------------------------
TheMIND Awards for the year 2013 were presented on 14th December,
2013 at Seri Pacific Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, during ‘TheMIND of
Champions ’13’ event. TheMIND Award is an endeavour of TheMIND
Education Fund to encourage and acknowledge the Malaysian Indian
undergraduate students who have achieved exceptional academic goals
with active involvement in extra co-curriculum activities and have
demonstrated extraordinary leadership and participation in
community-based support programs. TheMIND Education Fund Panel
(consisting of 3 members form TheMIND Management Committee and 3
external members) currently chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr Rajesh
Ramasamy, shortlisted 7 applicants for the interview. Finally four
most deserving candidates were selected as ‘TheMIND Award’
recipients. Applications were assessed based on applicants’ academic
achievement at undergraduate study, involvement in co-curricular
activities and contribution to the society.
TheMIND Awards were presented by Tan Sri Dr Mani Jegathesan ("The
Flying Doctor") and Mr Ramasamy K Veeran (MD of Merchantrade Asia) who
were the inaugural speakers of ‘TheMIND of Champions’ . The recipients
of TheMIND Award 2013 are: Ms Banu Jothimalarr, Ms Shamala Vadivelu,
Ms Shobana Nair Saseedharan and Ms Nallyswary Thiagarajan. Each
recipient of TheMIND Award was presented with a cheque for
RM1000.00, plaque and certificate. The award winners’ profiles are
provided here:-
Ms Banu Jothimalarr is currently pursuing a degree course at
University College Sedaya International (USCI) in Bachelor of Art in
Psychology. Her current CGPA is 3.77. Besides an excellent achievement
in academic, Ms Banu had shown tremendous interest and participation
at various social activities revolving around prevention of child
abuse, women empowerment and animal rescue. She is currently a member
of Soroptimist International Club of Bangsar, an organization
concerned with empowering and developing women across various
communities. She believes that leadership is a process rather than an
attribute where it requires a constant learning. She is motivated to
become a transformational leader.
Ms Nallyswary Thiagarajan is final year student of Universiti Malaysia
Pahang (UMP) who is pursuing a degree in Applied Science in Industrial
Biotechnology. Her current CGPA is 3.84. She has demonstrated
excellent leadership qualities at various activities conducted at
university level. She has led the sponsorship portfolio of ‘Malam
Pesta Cahaya’ in 2011 and also ‘Program Peningkatan Prestasi Pelajar’
at faculty Level. In addition to her active participation in various
programs, she is also a member of the Secretariat of Students’
Representative Council, UMP.
Ms Shobana Nair Saseedharan is a full time student pursuing a degree
in accountancy at Multimedia University with current CGPA of 3.73.
She had represented Malaysia at the 1st Microsoft Innovative Students’
Forum in Kuala Lumpur. Her passion in social welfare of marginalised
community made her actively participate in activities that improve
the literacy skills of marginalized communities via ‘Children Behind
Us’ (CBU) project. Moreover, she was also selected as a speaker at the
inaugural One Young World Summit in London on the topic ‘interfaith
dialogue’. In 2011, she was elected as a Global Teen Leader by the ‘
We are Family Foundation’ and currently part of the advisory committee
for online youth community, ‘TakingITGlobal’.
Ms Shamala Vadivelu is final year student at University Technical
Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), pursuing Bachelor of Computer Science in
Artificial Intelligence. She has scored a CGPA of 3.80. She has been
participated in several national and international programs that were
conducted to inspire university students for better achievement in
career development and social responsibility. She was also selected
for a student exchange program between Malaysia and Indonesia. Besides
that she has participated in various activities at university based
cultural and student development programs.
TheMIND of Champions 2013 - Summary
------------------------------------
TheMIND of Champions 2013 (MOC'13) was successfully held on December
14, 2003 at Seri Pacific Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. This program, first of
its kind, was aimed at motivating our youth (including students) to
propel forward in their academic and professional pursuits. MOC'13
featured Tan Sri Dr Mani Jegathesan, the 'Flying Doctor' who was once
Asia's fastest man, and Mr Ramasamy K Veeran, Founder and Managing
Director of Merchantrade Asia Sdn Bhd, as inaugural speakers.
In the first power talk, Tan Sri Dr Mani Jegathesan described his
pathway to success as a sportsman, medical doctor and scientist by
giving an interesting A to Z on how he swam against the tide to
triumph in capacities not many have even come close to. He stressed
that in the journey of achieving championship (not just sports, but
every social endeavor), the mind drives, controls and moderates every
activity that leads to achieving the desired outcome.
In the second power talk, Mr Ramasamy K Veeran gave participants an
insight into what it took for him to grow Merchantrade Asia into a
leading award-winning company. He described his struggle in his early
years and how he took the plunge of starting a business at a time when
the Asian financial crisis was looming. He shaped his entrepreneurial
pathway by being steadfast about being on top of his game. He stressed
on determination of the mind and spirit.
MOC’13 attracted 144 participants, who came from as far north as
Sungai Petani, Kedah and as far south as Batam, Indonesia. MOC’13 also
featured the presentation of TheMIND Award for excellent achievements
in undergraduate studies. The four recipients of TheMIND Award for
2013 were: Banu Jothimalar (USCI), Shamala Vadivelu (UTeM), Shobana
Nair Saseedharan (MMU) and Nallyswari Thiagarajan (UMP).
MOC’13 registered an approval rating of almost 100% based on written
evaluation collected from about 40% of the participants.

Community Driven Initiative - The Right of Sight - We are coming to Penang!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you would already know from our previous publications that The
Right of Sight is a community driven activity where an eye examination
program will be done for under enrolled Tamil School students. In this
program, students whom had been screened to have vision problem will
receive a pair of spectacles for free courtesy of the community. Our
pilot program in Selangor was successful then we explored Kedah where
it was successfully completed and now we will be going to Penang.
Objectives
-To do eye examination for all students from Tamil School that has 100
or less students at their school’s premise.
-To assist poor Tamil School student whom had been prescribed to wear
spectacles by optometrist by donating a pair spectacles, reducing the
financial burden of the poor family.
-Motivating the students to do better academically with their improved vision.
-To exhibit the caring nature of the community and corporate assisting
the less fortunate.
The 1st school for the screening would be SJKT Rajaji Penang (Island)
on 15 Jan 2014 followed by the rest of the under enrolled schools
after Gong Xi Fat Chai Holidays.

General Scholarship Scheme - The Government of India
----------------------------------------------------
The Government of India is offering six scholarships under the General
Scholarship Scheme (GSS) to meritorious students from Malaysia for the
academic year 2014-15. Students wishing to pursue undergraduate,
postgraduate degrees, or research at Indian Universities can apply for
the scholarship. The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) is
administering this scholarship scheme.
The scholarship covers all courses except medical-related (Medicine,
Dentistry, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Anaesthesia, etc.) and
fashion-related courses. Several institutions in India offering
various courses including Engineering / Architecture / Technology,
Humanities / Liberal Arts, Commerce, Management / Business
Administration, Journalism, Hotel Management, Agriculture, Veterinary
/ Animal Husbandry, Science, Law, Dance and Music, etc., are covered
under this scholarship. The High Commission of India can assist in
providing information regarding the educational institutions and the
various courses offered in India. Candidates may choose and prioritise
up to three Universities of their choice and indicate them. ICCR will
try to obtain admission in any of these Universities.
The candidates should meet the following selection criteria:
(i) the candidate should have the eligibility (qualification) to apply
for the course,
(ii) should be proficient in English, and
(iii) should not have serious health problems.
Priority will be given to students who have never studied in India
before. Applicants are also advised to do due diligence and research
on the specific admission criteria laid down by the various
Universities for each course, and ensure that they submit all relevant
documentation as required by the Universities in addition to the
certificates mentioned in the ICCR Scholarship Application Form.
The scholarship covers Tuition Fees, Living Allowance, House Rent
Allowance, Thesis and Dissertation Expenses, and Study Tour expense.

General Scholarship Scheme - The Government of India

The Government of India is offering six scholarships under the General
Scholarship Scheme (GSS) to meritorious students from Malaysia for the
academic year 2014-15. Students wishing to pursue undergraduate,
postgraduate degrees, or research at Indian Universities can apply for
the scholarship. The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) is
administering this scholarship scheme.
The scholarship covers all courses except medical-related (Medicine,
Dentistry, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Anaesthesia, etc.) and
fashion-related courses. Several institutions in India offering
various courses including Engineering / Architecture / Technology,
Humanities / Liberal Arts, Commerce, Management / Business
Administration, Journalism, Hotel Management, Agriculture, Veterinary
/ Animal Husbandry, Science, Law, Dance and Music, etc., are covered
under this scholarship. The High Commission of India can assist in
providing information regarding the educational institutions and the
various courses offered in India. Candidates may choose and prioritise
up to three Universities of their choice and indicate them. ICCR will
try to obtain admission in any of these Universities.
The candidates should meet the following selection criteria:
(i) the candidate should have the eligibility (qualification) to apply
for the course,
(ii) should be proficient in English, and
(iii) should not have serious health problems.
Priority will be given to students who have never studied in India
before. Applicants are also advised to do due diligence and research
on the specific admission criteria laid down by the various
Universities for each course, and ensure that they submit all relevant
documentation as required by the Universities in addition to the
certificates mentioned in the ICCR Scholarship Application Form.
The scholarship covers Tuition Fees, Living Allowance, House Rent
Allowance, Thesis and Dissertation Expenses, and Study Tour expense.
Please note that airfare will NOT be provided under this scholarship
scheme.
