Mogan shared with us the sad state of a family he visited whom direly need our help in Penang. The father with one functional limb trying really hard to support the children financially to enroll in a university but a of now no help being secured.
The Predicament
================
Family of eight. The father – Ganesan and the mother - Sivagami used to work to support the four school going children namely Danraj, Ramyiah, Sumithra and Navin. The father and the mother involved in tragic road accident on 10-4-2010 which resulted the mother died on the same day and the father’s right hand became paralysed. The accident resulted the father stopped working and on monthly Socso contribution of RM 573. Due to heavy financial difficulties, Ganesan’s sister who is working as nurse stay together and support the family.
Danraj and Ramyiah on the other hand had excelled in their respective study. Danraj completed STPM and offered to study degree in Environmental Engineering in University Perlis Malaysia. Ramyiah completed her matriculation with flying colors – CGPA of 4.0 and offered to study degree in chemical study in University Technology Malaysia. Due to financial difficulties of the family, both of them unable to enroll in the university. As the deadline (24-8-2016) draw nearer to pay the registration fees, both of them in extreme desperation thinking that they are leading a bleak future ahead. The father tirelessly approached many people for financial help for just one semester as the subsequent semesters will be covered by the study loan. However no positive feedback and he felt extremely devastated as he unable to help his children. The father, Danraj, Ramyiah and other family members folding their hands seeking helps for the sake of Danraj and Ramyiah future.
As there is potential for a study loan for next semester onwards, Mogan devised an assistance program to attend to their immediate needs for the next 6 months.
1. To support University course and registration fees for Danraj and Ramyiah – first semester only - Urgent - Deadline is 24-8-2016
i) Danraj : RM 2150
ii) Ramyiah : RM 2641
Total : RM 4791
2. To support food and other expenses for Danraj and Ramyiah – first semester only - On monthly basis for six months
i) Danraj : RM 300 X 6 months : RM 1800
ii) Ramyiah : RM 300 X 6 months : RM 1800
Total : RM 3600
Grand Total : RM 4791 + 3600 = 8391

Charity - SRJK(T) Ladang Scarboro
------------------------------------
Care Welfare Society (Persatuan Kebajikan Prihatin Kuala Muda) consists of a group of volunteers and has been in existence for the last 3 years. They have conducted numerous programs with the main goal to provide children studying in rural Tamil Schools with latest facilities in order for them to excel in education. Some of their successful programs include:
Currently they embarked in another noble project to assist to construct a new school block for SRJK(T) Ladang Scarboro, tearing down an old dilapidated school block. At the moment the school has only 3 class rooms and the have split the class into two rooms. This new block will house a canteen, Abdul Kalam Science Lab, Ramalinga Kindergarten III, toilets, store rooms and 3 class rooms. The project is estimated to cost RM175,000. Being a partially aided government school, the government does not support infrastructe building entirely but has contributed RM50,000 for the upgrade. Yayasan myNadi is sponsoring RM50,000 and the Association of Former Residence of Scarboro Estate has pledged another RM50,000. Hence they are short of RM27,000 to succesfully complete the building (exluding lab equiptment and furniture).

Community Driven Activity - The Right to Sight - Update
-------------------------------------------------------
1. Glad to say we have sponsors for 280 spectacles. Thanks to all the kind hearted donors that came forward to help. It translated to about 12% of the students as we have 2262 students to screen in Selangor (36 schools) and Penang (7 schools). This is about the percentage (16% to be accurate) of the students we have given spectacles in year 2014. Hence its suffice for now. We would know the right number of spectacles needed as when as we do the actual eye examinations in the participating schools. Would seek for help when needed then.
2. Now on the challenge we are facing, in 2014 we had The Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital (THONEH) who partnered with us in Selangor to do the eye examination. Unfortunately they politely declined to assist us in Selangor for this year.
3. Need your help:
a) Do you know any NGO or government based organization able to assist us to do the eye examination in Selangor (especially) or Penang.
b) If you are an optometrist or working in an optical company in Selangor, would you be willing to assist us to do the eye examination in Selangor ? We might need to engage several optical company to cover Selangor, if the above item fails. The plan is for each company to commit 2 half days (as school often close at 1pm), in these two days, possible to screen 5-6 schools. Hence would require 6-7 optical company. If you are able to help, need your: i) location; ii) price per pair of spectacles (Anti-glare, no reflection) you would be able to offer to the poor students.
Background
==========
In 2014, myMIBB members took the lead to organize “The Right to Sight – An Eye Examination Program for Under-enrolled Tamil School Students” as a community driven initiative partnering with various organizations such as The Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital (THONEH) and APEX Club of Kuala Lumpur. myMIBB members with their family and friends planned, raised funds and executed the whole program as a unit of community. The mailing list was merely a facilitator encouraging active citizenship among the members. The Right of Sight was a successful program where it managed to screen 2218 poor Tamil School students and assisted 371 of them from 45 under-enrolled Tamil schools (consisting <100 students) from Selangor, Penang and Kedah to obtain spectacles. Several students whom were suspected having pathological eye problems due to glaucoma, cataract and etc. were referred for further treatment.

Plan for 2016
=============
Our above data raises a pertinent point --- More than 16% of students (371/2218) from the participating Tamil schools would have had vision problem without our intervention. This is worrisome as studies worldwide have pointed that the vision and the academic performance of students are inter-related.
Thus it is important to ensure all students have good vision in order for them to excel well academically. A comprehensive eye examination program is needed for all Tamil School students, especially when we don’t have a national eye examination program in schools as we have the national dental program.
Due to the need, we plan to organize “The Right to Sight – An Eye Examination Program for Under-enrolled Tamil School Students” again for 2016. As our aim is for the community to sponsor spectacles only for the needy, often students in under-enrolled school come from financially strained family. Thus, as rule of thumb, any students prescribed to wear spectacles from these schools would be sponsored one pair of spectacles for free, contributed by the community. There are possibilities some of the target schools had already done an eye examination program organized by other good hearted organization, in such cases these schools will not be included in our list so we need not reinvent the wheel and can focus our resources holistically in schools that had not been covered.
Objectives
==========
-To do eye examination for all students from Tamil School that has <100 students at their school’s premise.
-To assist poor Tamil School students whom had been prescribed to wear spectacles by optometrist by donating a pair spectacles, reducing the financial burden of the poor family.
-Motivating the students to do better academically with their improved vision.
-To exhibit the caring nature of the community assisting the less fortunate.
