Attempt to sync new MLO to Outlook lost all old MLO Outlook items

I couldn't find an MLO file I was using some time back and am trying
to get organized again with MLO. I had previously synced with Outlook
and had a whole lot of MLO created / annotated Outlook tasks from
before. It looks like when I initiated sync with an empty MLO file,
MLO decided the Outlook items previously created had been deleted and
so it deleted them from Outlook. Now I can't find many old tasks
anywhere (they are not in the deleted items or deleted items
recovery).

How do I get these items back? Minimally MLO should notice that I
have a new, empty, MLO file and not go and wipe all my old MLO Outlook
items without asking me. If MLO deleted these with no chance of
recovery this is highly frustrating and disappointing.
